tl;dr: It's a cult. They cheat.

I played trumpet in the Goin' Band in the early 90s, and we made fun of them, too, especially since most college bands do a new halftime show for just about every game. The aggy band? They've done the same show with the same music at every game for years.

And, yeah, we all knew that many of their marchers weren't musicians. The obvious lack of mouthpieces kinda gives it away when you're down on the field and can see them up close.

The military marching style they do is high school-level shit. Very easy to learn very quickly, especially if you also don't have to memorize the music at the same time. Sure, it looks neat at first blush, but it doesn't make them THE BESTEST BAND IN THE LAND like their delusional fan base thinks.

It's pretty much the same with the whole mythology they've constructed about their history of football greatness based on a decade or so of cheating.

Were you there in 1996 when the Goin Band did a full-on traditional show at halftime at Kyle field?  They learned it in a week and kicked aggy band's ass at their own specialty.  Added bonus, it was raining that day and aggy had their brand new multimillion $$ grass field that got torn the fuck up by the halftime shows.

No, I was only in the Tech band in my freshman and sophomore years (Fall 1990 and 1991) and am unfamiliar with that particular story. By 1996, I'd already headed down to Austin for grad school, where I had wanted to go all along (long story short: my parents refused to pay for my tuition if I attended that commie school in Austin. No joke).

That said, I do recall something called the "Traditions Show," which was a bit of a mash-up of Texas-related music, like "Yellow Rose of Texas," and had a more traditional military-marching style while creating lots of elaborate interlocking shapes/patterns. There was one part where everyone marched in concentric circles or rings that expanded inward and outward that, I think, ended in a blooming flower kind of pattern (these are vague 30-plus-year-old recollections, so apologies if I'm wrong).

The band director at the time, Keith Bearden, got a kick out of doing that particular show to troll aggy when we played them to demonstrate that the shit they did wasn't so special. And, yes, it was a one-week-only kind of thing was reserved for playing AnM. I know we played it at Kyle Field during my freshman year in 1990, which was a gawd awful experience. What I remember during that game was that it was hot, muggy, and stifling as fuck, so fairly early in the season. Tech ended up losing, but it was a close one. They'd only provided enough space to accommodate a 200-person band in the stadium, but there were roughly 400 or so. You probably can imagine how that'd work with all the bulky equipment and instruments.

This was way before the Mike Leach, so there shouldn't have been a "rivalry" between Tech and aggy, but the Raiders had gone something like 4-6 in the previous decade. Still, it was the most unfriendly stadium environment (NOT to be interpreted as intimidating) we visited during my short 2-year college band geek career. We were on the lower level (SE corner), and throughout the game, aggy gomers pelted us with trash, spit, various liquid, and other shit all throughout that miserable game. It was the exact fucking opposite of any of those fake stories they post on texags proclaiming what good hosts they are.

In short, fuck aggy forever. Btw, we won that gotdam halftime against their vaunted fake army marching band.

But at least it wasn’t horseshit. Classy bunch.

You forgot convincing the Texas legislature to pass a bill prohibiting magic in the great state of Texas so their starting QB doesn't get his mind  irreparably blown, causing sudden erratic play and forcing post season transfers.
