Gerry Hamilton mentioned this guy as someone they are monitoring for the RB coach opening:

looks like he was a volume recruiter at NC state. He pulled in a 4 star DT who had a Bama offer.

Five candidates to replace Stan Drayton as running back coach

Mike Roach

Stan Drayton is off to Temple to be their head coach. Texas had a lot of stability with Drayton as the running back coach over the last few years. Where can Texas look next? Here’s a look at five candidates who could fit at Texas.

Brandon Harris – Internal promotion

Harris has been looking to move his career to an on-field role, and his work as an assistant with Stan Drayton during his first few years on campus would allow him to transition into the room seamlessly. Many coaches get their first on-field experience at a position like running back, and Harris’s ability to get on the road and use his strong recruiting skills would help the Texas staff. There is a possibility that Drayton chooses to take Harris with him as a position coach at Temple as well. Texas could look at other coaches in the personnel department such as Chris Gilbert for this role as well.

Chris Gilbert - Internal promotion

Gilbert has been fantastic behind the scenes as a recruiter in his first year on the 40 Acres.  A long time offensive coach at the high school level, Gilbert is a veteran coach who could help stop the drop-off Texas would feel in recruiting.  Gilbert would be a dynamic recruiter in Dallas where he was born and raised, but his former status as an executive officer in the THSCA would allow him to reach all over the state of Texas.  There will likely come a time where a school tries to poach Gilbert with promises of an on-field role.  Texas could head that off by elevating Gilbert and benefitting in the recruiting realm.

Brennan Marion – Pittsburgh

Marion has been working his way up through the lower levels, but he’s starting to gain some national acclaim for his work. A Hampton, Virginia native, Marion played at Tulsa and spent a little bit of time in the NFL before moving onto his coaching career. Marion spent time at the high school level before moving up to Arizona State as an analyst and then Oklahoma Baptist as a running back coach. After stints at Howard and William & Mary, Marion was hired at Hawaii in 2020. In 2021, Marion joined the Pittsburgh coaching staff and helped lead the Panthers to the ACC Title. Marion has been recruiting Texas and Oklahoma for quite a while, and he’s one of the best young innovative minds in the game. The creator of the Go Go Offense, Marion could add some new offensive ideas to Steve Sarkisian’s playbook. Marion is a receiver coach at the moment, but he does have history as a running back coach and could be a plus recruiter.

Keith Bhonapha – Washington

Bhonapha was born in Oakland and grew up in the Bay Area. After a college career at Hawaii, Bhonapha moved into the director of football operations role at Boise State. Following a three-year stint, Bhonapha was named running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. He followed Chris Petersen to Washington in 2014 to serve the same role where he helped recruit Hawaii, Washington, California and Texas. Bhonapha’s time at Boise State and Washington overlaps with Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate, and that familiarity could help him land the job.

Nate Scheelhaase– Iowa State

A former four-star recruit, Scheelhaase played quarterback at Illinois after being named a four-star prospect. After his playing career ended, Scheelhaase was named to the football operations department at Illinois as an assistant. He was later elevated to running backs coach for the Illini. Scheelhaase joined Matt Campbell’s staff in 2018 as a running backs coach. After serving the 2019 and 2020 seasons as a wide receiver coach, Scheelhaase had his role expanded to include running backs, receivers and the running game coordinator title. At Iowa State, Scheelhaase coached David Montgomery and Breece Hall. Scheelhaase was named to the 247Sports 30 Under 30 as one of the biggest rising stars in the profession.

As has been echoed, mostly a dogshit list.

That being said, if Chris Gilbert ACTUALLY wants an on field coaching position, I'm fine giving it to him. I'm not sure that dude wants to be on the road making it rain, however. He seems to be doing plenty well from behind a desk with his feet up. But he's young enough.

Brennan Marion is an interesting name. Although "Could be a plus recruiter" feels like Mike Roach completely made up bullshit because he knows nothing, Snow Cone.

Recruiting. Rain. Maker.

Probably just echoing Rod Babers since Rod made the case for this guy yesterday on the radio yesterday. Says that guy has taken some kid without much talent and made him an award finalist at WR. He also talked about the guy gaining respect for innovative approach. I would assume Rod was the first to put the name out there and Roach is just compiling of list of names he has heard in different places.

Tend to agree. I like this idea more than Brandon fucking Harris. Can't wait until we get someone actually good at that job to take over that position.

From Marion's wiki:

During Marion's tenure at Waynesboro High School, he developed the GoGo offense, which incorporates principles of old-school triple-option offenses with modern spread concepts.[2] In his first game as Howard's offensive coordinator, Marion's offense helped the FCS Bison defeat UNLV on September 13, 2017.[3] The win by the 45-point underdog Bison was the largest point-spread upset in college football history.[4]

I wonder if Drayton will take Coleman to be WR/Passing game coordinator and Choate to be DC?

That will be interesting and could help us turnover staff without looking like we fired anyone as they took "promotions" at other school.

Definitely curious who Drayton might take with him, but Drayton has a long successful career and has only been at Texas with this particular staff for a year so we might not be so lucky as to have him poach a few undesirables from this current staff.

Drayton mentioned in his intro press conference that the #1 thing he is looking for in his staff is ties to the Northeast region. With that being said, I could see Coleman landing there more than Choate. But who knows.

Brennen Marion has 1 year of RB coaching experience, in 2016 at Oklahoma Baptist. Am I missing something there?

He also just coached the Biletnikoff winner at Pitt, so maybe (definitely) he should just replace Coleman as WR coach...

I think generally RB coach is treated like TE coach - anyone can do it.

Assuming we are replacing Coleman - sure lets give that job to Marion.  Hell, maybe Gerry's sources got mixed up on what Marion was being contacted for.

Though I'm not convinced anyone is getting fired.

I can’t tell if it’s all recent but a lot of Texas folks are following Brennan Marion on Twitter. Including Xavier Worthy

Don't know about his recruiting chops, but he's a legit offensive mind. Should be fun bouncing off of Sark and Flood.

Drayton is his 5th most recent follow (ie person Marion has followed). Would be a logical OC choice at Temple..

JM Jones and Jeff Banks are semi-recent follow, can't tell how recent.

I like this guy a lot as a WR coach. Idk about RBs just bc he doesn't really have experience there.

Hearing that Gary Patterson is in Austin right now meeting with Sarkisian. Some of the 9.95ers are mentioning it on their recruiting wrap up.

Seems like they intentionally waited until NSD to move this forward. Idk if that's bc our staff wanted to focus on recruiting, Gary didn't want to mess with TCU's recruiting or what. Guessing we'll find out if it's happening or not fairly soon.
