While it’s great to see lsu get punked, I don’t like seeing some rich asshole from michigan flexing his minuscule johnson.

Eh. Underwood is from Michigan. If they plan on being a player in the NIL era, losing him wasn't an option.

Did you like it more over the last decade when rich bayou sleaze lords flexed their miniscule financial muscles for: Jamal Adams, Ed Paris, Eric Monroe, Grant Delpit, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Harold Perkins?  This new reality is way, way better.

It is more defensible when it’s to keep a local star home.  Michigan doesn’t produce many #1 overall prospects.  I would hope and expect that we would do the same in a similar situation.

No, it’s the potential for Portnoy to pull a Phil Knight (with obviously far less money, but still enough) and throw tons of money into NIL. A single very rich dude can have a very big impact on Texas recruiting success.

Does it sting more to you than what Phil Knight is doing at Oregon?

No? So basically you’re scared of The Landscape. I’m of the opinion this is the world, so we know what we have to deal with. Better than the bag game while Texas holds its nose and ignores reality.

go tell some rich Texas alums their honor is being challenged. But I’m not going to get my panties in a twist about a Michigan alum having to offer a HS kid 10-12 million to stay home. OH NOES TEXAS IS FUCKED!!

That’s my exact point. See above.

I was editing my post. See above. Although my post was more of a “why does this scare you more than” and yours was more of a “holy shit holy shit I’m scared” slant.

No, my only point is that everyone is laughing about lsu.  And it is funny. And I love it. But tomorrow Knight or Portney could decide to aim their dollars this direction and poach Texas players and it wouldn’t be so funny.

Of course, if a Texas billionaire or two wanted to step up, then obviously that would be great.  But right now I’m going to limit my joy over lsu’s misfortune because it wouldn’t be very fun watching bidding wars between a couple of rich billionaire assholes. Basically I hate Portnoy.

If it makes you feel better, Michigan's NIL group is literally crediting Larry Ellison for flipping Underwood

Portnoy isn't in the same stratosphere as Knight.

Portnoy has enough to sign a QB every 3-4 years. Knight bankrolls the entire Oregon NIL, Portnoy is only giving to a QB. Not that it matters because, as previously mentioned, Moore is the head coach and he is a fucking moron.

that's gotta be the beginning of the end for Kelly in Baton Rouge, correct?

One of their mods, not Dixon, clearly stated they can’t afford the buyout until 2026. If you need some confirmation that they’re broke, their NIL offer was 1/8th of what Michigan offered.

Last couple of weeks before signing day so this is "stupid money" season when desperate teams throw out insane numbers?

Michigan, Florida, and Texas A&M all say hi.

One thing you can tell about the NIL era, all three are real academic colleges (TAMU to a lesser degree but better than Ole Miss or LSU) with legitimately wealthy alumni.

We don’t really go head to head with Michigan. So I hope they turn the season around and sign a bunch of 5 stars. When I was a kid I liked their helmets

I’m in my 40s and I still like their helmets.

So you are issuing the Portnoy's Complaint?

You sonuvabiscuit, I was planning my brilliant “Portnoy’s Complaint” reply, but did the right thing and read the rest of the thread first. The thought did send me down a Philip Roth rabbit hole, which made me recall just how incredible Ali McGraw was in Goodbye, Columbus. Which takes me back to, “fuck Ryan Day.”

The crypto run up may empower/embolden some bros to do more in the NIL space. Not sure if any of Harvard’s endowment makes it to sports, step up Winklevii.

They don't have anywhere near enough for his buyout plus a new coach

You have to be bearish on coaching salaries right?  I guess operating the most efficient bag game was worth it for the poverty redneck schools but spending such an appreciable fraction of your player payroll on a head coach is insane.

There's no transparency on any of this, but at some point won't the donors look at the ratio of coaching salaries to player salaries in the ncaa vs the nfl and start asking themselves questions?

Maybe. Some schools will have to because they are up shit creek trying to stay competitive for players otherwise.

One casualty that I expect to see quickly is the Sexton Fisher Maneuver in which horrendously lopsided buyouts in favor of the coaches are woven into their contracts. No coach is so important that they deserve a full buyout when they’re putting dogshit on the field. That idiot Woodward is hilariously the one that started that and now LSU is trapped for years with that asshole Kelly.

Underwood will probably make at least 3x what his OC takes home at Michigan, and he’ll probably approach Moore’s salary with all of his combined deals. The players making more than their coaches is already here, and the players making more their HC is just around the corner.

That’s how it is in every single other major sport around the world. Star players are more valuable than coaches.

Just thinking out loud here, but it would be cool to have some sort reference area in which one of the things we house is a tracker of coaching salaries, buyouts, assistant buyouts, etc.

We have the one dude with a weird handle name that does a great job of tracking eligibility for the UT football roster, @AP101S I think?, and that would go there too. I don't know, could add depth to the site that outpaces other places.

Wondering what the actual size is of Kelly's contract, plus his assistants, made me think about it. I'm not lazy enough to not type this out here, but I am lazy enough to avoid going elsewhere and trying to decipher what in the fuck is real versus some coonass spitballing over it.
