With the teams we had, we should have double or more than that. We by far had the best rosters, and yet Mack constantly got butt fucked by Stoops almost yearly, and add in K-State, Tech,or some other team we had superior talent to. Mack sucked as a HC, but he was a good smiley glad hand. There's a reason he was called coach February, and they weren't wrong. Very few times did we lose just 1 game. In fact, he has 3, and 1 undefeated season (remember, he was here for 15 years). Other than that, he has 2+ losses per season. We were constant holiday bowl attendees. But we did have great ST's for almost his entire tenure.

Stoops won the conference 7 times, and Mack just 2 times. How sad is that? Stoops is 8-5 over Mack, and then went on to wreck other teams on his way to yet another CC.

With all those NFL players we churned out during his tenure, it's pathetic he only had 2 CC's in his 15 seasons. John Mackovic has 1, Sark has the other 1.

Stoops has the same number of championships as Mack

And that's how low we had been. Just absolutely crazy to think about.

The other guys you mentioned I'm too young to remember, but didn't Akers do pretty well until the end? I honestly don't know; I think I've seen posts about it before he was fired, but I'm not entirely sure.

Akers was great the 1st 5or 6 years...but after about 1984 it all fell apart for him.

And yet he was still a vast upgrade over Mackovic, McWilliams, and the later half of Akers.

Mackovic won 1 Big XIi conference championship, 1 SWC championship, and tied for a 3rd SWC championship.

3 conference championships to 2 conference championships for Mack Brown.

Fuck Mack Brown!!

Akers was 2 plays away from 2 national titles, yeah? Why did we even have a guy back fielding the punt vs UGA

Lest not forget Jeff Ward missed three field goals that game.

Short field goals if I remember correctly.

Besides Texas, I was also a Nebraska fan at the time. They got their ass kicked too that day.

Oh Christ are we doing this again? I was done bitching about Mack after 2014-2020 happened. He was far from perfect but we were a fixture in the top 10 for a decade and won the title in the best game ever played. He wasn’t inexplicably losing to Maryland and Cal and Iowa St and Kansas regularly.

It must have fallen apart fast because after 84 was 85 and he was fired in 86.

I was a kid, my old man went to a "fire Fred Akers party". What i remember is Akers going to an i formation to get Earl as many handles as.possible, Heisman.  After that, it eventually just stunk. It got to a point, even as a kid i knew it was dog shit. First down run, second down run, third and long, pass. 4th down punt. Over and over again.  The hiring in those days was terrible. Then it was McWilliams,  then Mackovic.

People today talking about surving the Strong and Herman days, bitch, some of us survived Akers, McWilliams, Mackovic,  Strong and Herman.

Please don’t tell me you’re counting the 94 season in which a&m went undefeated and smoked the league but couldn’t win it due to probation, we lost to rice, and there were 5 co-champs at 4-3 in conference. 🤦‍♂️😂

Without question. Our last one from Stanford was pretty damn good.

The increase of allowed scholarships to 105 or whatever may increase the desirability of giving one to a kicker. I don't know shit, but I'd think it would.

Per Gerry on OTF

Says a person he spoke with thinks Texas is a big big leader for Kellen Wiley.

Hilson OV to A&M this weekend not certain according to some people around Hilson.

Why derail a Mack Brown bitch thread with actual recruiting notes?

Hell let Arch or Trey Owens punt. It would also add the threat of throwing the ball from punt formation.

You might be joking but that was a definite weapon during the Ash years. Actually the opposite: punting from offensive formations on 4th down.

Excuse me sir, but arm punts are strictly forbidden in the Manning family contract. Best I can do is to have him catch his own pass 50 yards downfield.

I’d exclusively get punters and kickers from the portal.  Much lower bust rate than high school kicking specialist recruits

Are you saying we should have not taken Samborn?  That take seems wrong.  The problem is who we picked to replace him.

Not common to have been fired from one school at which you won the NC and another at which you are the winningest coach in its history.

Now he just needs to go to Tulane to complete the ultimate palindrome career of ascension and school firings.

Anyone have Gerry's Yes/No/Maybe? Curious if he's kept Myron Charles in Yes.

Gerry Hamilton

No. 1 ranked class loading? : Yes, no or maybe

Signing day is just eight days away, and Steve Sarkisian and staff are deep sea fishing. And that is putting it mildly.

Texas currently has 24 commitments, and sitting inside the top 5 class rankings at No. 4.

There are six prospects right now that OnTexasFootball is monitoring closely headed into signing day December 4. And any combination of winning three of the six would place Texas No. 2 in the class rankings, with a realistic shot at No. 1.

In the latest edition of Yes, maybe or no; OTF believes Texas has three leans right now with two being significant leads.

Yes

Kellen Wiley, LB, Seffner (Fla.) Armwood
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star
The recruitment: Texas is a big leader here. OTF puts it at 80% for the Horns - as of Monday.

Michael Terry II, ATH, San Antonio (Texas) Alamo Heights
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++
The recruitment: Texas leads Nebraska.

Javion Hilson, EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.) High
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++
The recruitment: Texas vs. Texas A&M vs. Michigan with a decision December 4. Per a source, Hilson will decide later in the week if he's making the OV to Texas A&M Saturday-Sunday. Cocoa High plays a third round playoff game Friday night.

Maybe

Michael Fasusi, OT, Lewisville (Texas) High - Oklahoma commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star
The recruitment: Oklahoma fighting for their life in this one with Texas having made a push, and Texas A&M set to do the same this weekend. Will Fasusi's mom make the visit this weekend? We shall see. His father and sister made the trip to Texas last weekend.

Justus Terry, DL, Manchester (Ga.) High
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star
The recruitment: Georgia battling Auburn and Texas. Kirby Smart doesn't want Terry going to Texas, make no mistake.

Nathaniel Marshall, DL, Oak Park (Il.) Fenwick
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++
The recruitment: Auburn remains confident due to relationship with the mom. Michigan is also in this one. Texas visit went well enough for the Horns to stay engaged.

No

Dorian Brew, CB, Conroe (Texas) High - *Oregon
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++
The recruitment: A family decision to stay close to Houston very late would have to be the deciding factor.

Chace Sims, DL, Richmond (Texas) Randle - *Texas A&M commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star+
The recruitment: Sims family has shut it down. Chace was open to making a second visit, however.

Sounds like the bag game is still alive and well in colleyville.

Charles is currently committed, so the post didn't reference him due to that being considered a given. Florida has thrown the offer his way, Texas has handled that and doesn't plan on losing him.

The bag game is alive and well with the old school cheaters across the country. It's like moonshine or black market bookies/betting. There will always be a place for just handing a HS football coach and eventually a dad or uncle $50-$75k to short circuit a recruitment. It's not a big market these days, at all, but the Chace Sims-esque recruitments still show-up.

Texas should have been more serious with Sims when he wanted to commit in the early summer. Instead, Sarkisian wouldn't let Baker pull the trigger. Sims wound up being under-ranked and is a damned good prospect. This recruitment reminds me of the Jacoby Matthews recruitment where the player had no interest in going to ATM but those around him made damned sure he signed there. Ruined that dude's career, too. He flunked out and disappeared.

This idea that keeps being presented that Kirby doesn’t want to lose Justus to Texas makes me think the offer will be whatever it has to be on that side.  So unless Georgia doesn’t have the resources to do that, he should be in the no group.

Have I answered my own question there or am I missing some relevant information?

One thing that is kind of odd about Gerry is how he says Georgia doesn't let talent leave the state....but roughly 2/3 of the top 25 talent in the state leaves every year.
