No income tax in Texas. But, no worries. Hopefully he's 0-4 against Texas and all is right within the world.

Whatever state income tax you pay is deductible from you federal.  As long as the state rate < federal rate, it doesn't make a difference other than timing.

Plus Texas has a higher total tax burden than Oklahoma. It’s a more than fair price to pay to not live in Oklahoma, of course.

Not really that simple. If you pay over  the standard deduction which ranges from $14,600 to $29,200( depending on filing status) in state taxes you can deduct the taxes. If you do itemize the state taxes it is not dollar for dollar. Assume you are in a 25% marginal tax bracket and pay $30,000 in state taxes, you will save $7,500 in federal income taxes, $30,000 x 25%= $7,500. The $30,000 reduces your AGI by the $30,000 , which is what your federal tax is based. In reality , since the standard deduction i, say for a single person is $14,600, you will only save $30,000-$14,600 = $15,400 , $15,400 x 25%=$3,850. So only your federal taxes are reduced $3,850 by paying $30,000 in state taxes.

Not really. If you are able to deduct the taxes you lose the standard exemption you get anyway. Plus it only reduces your agi, the amount subject to the federal marginal tax rate. If you are in a 25% bracket , 30,000 of state taxes will save you at most the excess over your standard deduction x 25%. 30,000 -14,600(single) x 25%= $3,850.

No kidding. It wasn’t the divorce or the loss of his furry best friend. Perhaps an inventory of priorities would be prudent. I have to say, I could not have been less shocked to discover this dude had a major drug problem.

As of this moment, allegedly Georgia hasn't presented an absurd offer to Terry, while Texas and perhaps Auburn have. That's the whole point of "not sure Kirby is going to let a 5 star in-state DL go to Texas" comments. There's an expectation that Georgia is going to match whatever is needed in the end in order to retain the guy. Georgia might be out of gas though. They're not Yellawood backed or Ellison/Knight backed or built with a collective/corporate combo on the level of Texas. They had to do a whole lot already to get a lot of guys across the finish line and two of those were 5 star DLs. There's always the shot that Georgia's backers have fatigue or nothing left to give in this cycle.

Were that to be the case, then it comes down to distance from home for the family and how Texas could overcome it. Auburn's offering, in yet another cycle, is that they have a lot of money to pay a player and the current roster sucks so badly that said player can play significantly immediately. So they got a bunch of guys to hold their nose and sign. Maybe that works with Terry here as well.

Allegedly the final bids are due today, so we'll know soon. I'm guessing Auburn wins if they've landed in the range of Texas. I don't see the poors at Bama winning unless the guy wants to give Kalen Daboer a discount for some reason.

Probably an Auburn head/Georgia heart kind of deal in the end. At least with Georgia or Texas, development at the position can be pointed out versus the shitshow in development at Auburn with Durkin. They've had two DTs drafted in the last 4 drafts - both 7th rounders last year, already barely hanging on to an NFL roster via the practce squad.

Expand

Do you see our large offer as Sark wanting to flex out in Georgia to recruits there moving forward?

Also I know you previously mentioned the Bama discount that was given last year with respect to Deboer....do you feel like their performance this year has hindered the ability of the "Bama discount"?

The least amount of draft picks produced by Bama in more than a decade was 7 in 2022. That class still included 2 1st rounders. The last 2 drafts have seen double digit picks each year and 6 1st rounders total. Until there's some sort of fall off, a discount will probably be a thing for a bunch of guys. Bama didn't sign a top 5 class this cycle by slinging around top level cash.

I assume the allegedly very competitive offer to Terry is being put forward for the simple reason that he's an outstanding prospect at a position of desperate need for Texas. Doubt there's much else to it. If that guy short-circuits a dev cycle and can play early, that lessens pressures in the portal. Maybe that's what they also see.

It will be interesting to see how Hicks looks in the spring.  That's real young to be going up against our roster.

I hope our offer is “absurd”. I don’t see why it wouldn’t if we need that position desperately

Could see weighing going crazy on a guy who will be a freshman next year vs a portal addition that may be more ready to contribute. Sounds like they’re willing to pay him a lot regardless.

I imagine being this close to the first consensus number one class since the MB days helped moved the offer-needle to "absurd." Here's to the guys trying to make it happen.

Too lazy to find one of Gerry's predictions but always love looking back at these especially from February-May or so and seeing how it compares to the signed class and man the defensive intel from the beginning of the cycle was WAY off

Gerry posted his best class scenario for the week. The link is below. OTF is producing great content. The posters there remind me of the nightmares I encountered on 247 back in the day. Guys posting using their actual names, people making 4-6 consecutive posts as whatever mental diarrhea pours out of their head and onto their keyboard, posters getting really, really sensitive if your tone with them isn't boy scout level straight, and then just dumb concepts posted and debated repeatedly. So, caveat emptor if you follow the link.

-I find it interesting that he leaves Faheem Delane out but includes a number of high end OOS guys otherwise.

-He clearly thinks the shot is more than there to land Moore or he wouldn't be hammering him in the comments as a viable, difference-making target.

-People simply cannot wrap their head around Texas not really pursuing the giant clubfoot at Desoto. There is a juvenile understanding of what elite OLs look like, so the default is "that guy is huge! he must be awesome!"

-Davison, Moore, Ffrench, ZWilliams, Shanklin, Brew and JWilliams will all be serious NIL recruitments, to say nothing of the potential for that in a number of other spots. If one of the other schools in any of those goes nuts, it's unlikely that Texas lands them. That's important to remember in the context of who has a robust NIL set-up, like Ohio State or Oregon, versus those who do not, like OU and LSU. If LSU decides they have to have Moore, they're unlikely to land some other guys. And they have to deliver in uncomfortable ways already to sign Underwood. OU can't just toss ridiculous dough at JWilliams without facing real consequences everywhere else. Meanwhile, Texas and OSU likely are likely not interested in a bidding war on anyone, because they'll just hurt each other and strengthen the rest of the field. The Davison recruitment is probably more informative there than the Brew recruitment. OSU already has 2 5 star DBs in the class, so they'd be idiots to try and spike things on Brew.
