Texas Recruiting Notes 2025: Duck Around and Find Out

Just to put the shitty week into perspective, I looked at Texas last year..

Texas brought in 47-49 kids for official visits and signed 22.

The following players were committed to other schools (or on the verge of committing to other schools) at this time

Simmons LSU

Filsame - Florida

Mack -Florida.

Butler -  Colorado.

TyAnthony Smith - A&M.

Missed on notable players like Micah Hudson, Wesco, Ryner Swanson, Daniel Calhoun, Michael Uini, Makia Saina, Jordan Ross, McKinley, Jonan Ajonye, Jayden Jackson, Faga, Hibbler, Lindsey, Gipson, Justin Williams

So despite all the bad news, Texas is not far from where they were last year. Hopefully, Sark finishes like he did last year.

Looks like we've turned a longshot into our best shot at a strong 3 lb class, pending late risers and are awaiting more bad news that probably isn't Brooks. Townsend comes to mind, and if so, hopefully the pushed announcement ends up in our favor.

I'm not going to get worked up over this class at all with what's in the building, but it sure would be nice to know we're not actively stomping our own dicks in recruiting. When Sark fucks up, they're almost always unforced errors (late game play calling, recruiting staff losses and backfills, retaining Joseph, almost hiring Stoops, etc) and the "culture" content gets pretty fucking old when all this validation of the HC hides the fact that in reality, ego is winning out.

Gerry running through the upcoming decisions this morning:

WR Kelshaun Johnson- A&M or Texas on July 10th. A&M has been pushing the longest but Sark has been in contact with him and his mom multiple times this weekend.

LB Jonathan Cunningham- Texas or TCU on July 12th. Comes down to if he is okay with sitting a year and developing at Texas vs potentially getting on the field right away at TCU.

WR Tanook Hines- USC, Notre Dame or Texas on July 15th. A&M has been in contact too and he thinks maybe it could be tied to Kelshaun Johnson

TE Nick Townsend- Texas vs A&M and USC on July 15th.

DT DJ Sanders- Texas or A&M. Michigan running third. Decision at some point in July.

S Nathan Tilmon- An announcement is coming any day. Texas trending over Utah and TCU

LB Madden Faraimo- Texas or Notre Dame. Decision coming this month.

CB Aidan Anding- LSU visit in late July. Will be a Tiger unless something weird happens.

WR Kaliq Lockett- A&M turning up the heat along with Texas, Bama and FSU. Decision in early August.

WR Jamie Ffrench- Texas continues to feel good ahead of August 30th decision.

OT Michael Fasusi- Late August decision. Texas vs OU with OU trending since late June.

OT Nick Brooks- Texas continues to have confidence over Georgia ahead of the September decision

ATH Michael Terry- Fall decision expected. Texas, Oregon, A&M and Nebraska.

The Stampede: Resetting the big board after a rough start to Texas football recruiting in July

Quote

It wasn't the start to July Texas football fans wanted, but there's still plenty to be optimistic about when it comes to Texas football's 2025 recruiting efforts. It is only July 8, after all. Here, Horns247 does its best to reset the big board after some key misses (and gets) on the recruiting trail in recent weeks. Take a look!

Jordan Scruggs handled offense, Hank South handled defense

QUARTERBACK

Current commits: Saraland (Ala.) four-star KJ Lacey

Lacey was the first prospect to commit to the Longhorns in the 2025 cycle back on June 3 of last summer, and in the time since he's obviously remained pledged to the Burnt Orange. There's been bumps in the road with keeping his pledge solid with visits to Auburn this spring and mutual interest shown between Ole Miss and Oregon, but at this point in time things seem as solid as they've ever been between Texas and Lacey. He helped peer recruit his good friend and 7on7 teammate in 2026 five-star Dia Bell to Texas, showing firmness in his pledge. Lacey is also working on recruiting five-stars Jaime Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett to Texas football as well, and with where things currently stand we'd be surprised if Lacey isn't in the recruiting class come early signing day in December.

Main targets: N/A

Other names: N/A

RUNNING BACK
Current commits: Shreveport (La.) Calvary Baptist Academy four-star James Simon, Tyler Chapel Hill three-star Rickey Stewart

All signs pointed to Texas for Simon once LSU took a second commitment at the running back position in the 2025 cycle. Tashard Choice maximized the opportunity and took advantage of it by moving quickly and getting Simon on-campus for a weekend long unofficial visit during the Texas spring game. The Longhorns led from that point on, and a little over a month later Simon found himself committing to Texas. With the efforts of Khenon Hall, Stewart decided to go ahead and shut his recruitment down in favor of SMU before his junior season but backed away from the commitment after Hall left for Baylor and the Texas offer came about at the Jan. 20 Junior Day. Texas was always the dream school for Stewart, and once he had his offer from the Longhorns it was pretty much over then and there.

Main targets: N/A

Other names: N/A

WIDE RECEIVER
Current commits: N/A

Main targets: Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin five-star Jaime Ffrench, Sachse five-star Kaliq Lockett, Hitchcock four-star Kelshaun Johnson

Ohio State is still somewhere in the mix for Ffrench, but the planned August 30 commitment date is expected to be a decision between the four schools of LSU, Miami, Tennessee, and Texas. The Longhorns have gained lots of traction since hosting Ffrench on campus for the first time back in April for the Longhorn City Limits recruiting event, and in the time since have maintained their relevance amongst the group of contenders. With a recruitment like this, there's almost sure to be jockeying between the schools in the front of the race between now and August 30, but regardless, Horns247 likes Texas' chances with Hank South going ahead and entering in a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of the Longhorns at the start of Ffrench's Texas official visit in June. The Longhorns got the last visit the June 21-23 weekend, and when asked if Ffrench would visit a program at the end of July, he told media that he was likely done with visits until his commitment was given. On the same note, Ffrench did say if there was a school he'd see at the end of July it'd be Texas.

Lockett has a top five of Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Texas, and Texas A&M with a decision date set for August 7. Sources close to the recruitment view the decision coming down to Alabama, Florida State, and Texas, but there is one source who believes the recruitment will be an Alabama vs. Texas battle for the nation's No. 2 receiver prospect. Some believe with Dakorien Moore headed to Oregon it only increases the Longhorns' chances of landing Lockett, but I'd like to hear more from sources before really reporting that as concrete, verified info. Regardless, Texas has a great shot and should continue to have a great shot in this one, and while I'm not quite confident enough to enter in a Crystal Ball prediction just yet, I do view the Longhorns as the program with the highest chances of landing Lockett as things currently stand.

Johnson was originally supposed to commit today but Hurricane Beryl pushed his commitment back to Wednesday. A Texas vs. Texas A&M battle for the G-County speedster, there was a lot of confidence in the Longhorns winning this recruitment earlier in the summer but the Aggies crept in in May and ultimately ended up capturing lots of momentum with Johnson in June. Because of that, my Crystal Ball was changed to the Aggies, but with Texas pushing really hard over the last few days with Horns247 expecting the Longhorns push to remain all the way till Wednesday, this is a recruitment we will be heavily monitoring the next few days. I still slightly lean toward the Aggies, but with Texas pushing like they are, the Longhorns could still very much win this one.

Other names: Spring Dekaney four-star Tanook Hines, Lovejoy four-star Daylan McCutcheon

Hines was also supposed to commit today, but like Johnson, Hurricane Beryl also pushed his ceremony back and he'll now be announcing his commitment on Monday July 15th on the 247Sports College Football Recruiting show. USC was who sources close to Hines viewed as having the best shot if the commitment was to have been made today, but with the commitment date pushed back one week, those sources view Texas as having a grand opportunity to land Hines. However, those sources were adamant about Texas having to really push hard and more specifically push the right buttons if the Longhorns were to have a better shot at landing Hines. Chris Jackson has increased contact with Hines in recent days, but will it be enough to land Hines over both USC and Notre Dame? We'll see. USC seemed to be in front of Florida State last time I checked on the McCutcheon recruitment, and with McCutcheon set to announce his commitment between Johnson and Hines' announcements, I'm not sure of exactly how hard Texas will push for him over the next week.

TIGHT END
Current commits: Calhoun (Ga.) four-star Emaree Winston

Winston silently committed to the Longhorns in November and went public with the decision in December. Since then he's remained committed to the Longhorns even after summer official visits to Auburn and UCF. The Georgia native was part of a group that peer recruited Nick Townsend while Townsend officially visited June 21-23 and Horns247 expects Winston to remain in the Longhorns' 2025 recruiting class come early signing day.

Main targets: Spring Dekaney four-star Nick Townsend

There's not much new to this recruitment. Alabama was the leader for the majority of the spring and once Kiotti Armstrong committed to Texas A&M while Townsend was on-campus for his A&M official visit, Texas was set up incredibly well to change some momentum on their official visit which fell on the last OV weekend. That they did, and since visiting Austin last the Longhorns have been the school which every source in Houston points to as having the best chances. Like his teammate and good friend Tanook Hines, Townsend's commitment ceremony got postponed one week and he'll now be making his decision on the 247Sports College Football Recruiting Show on Monday July 15th. I've already entered in a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Texas landing the Top247 ATH, and Horns247 expects the decision to be in favor of the Longhorns next Monday.

Other names: N/A

Unless Texas is going to miss on Townsend (which Horns247 does not expect), I'm not optimistic about the flip chances of Kaleb Edwards or Kiotti Armstrong at the moment. That could obviously change as we get closer to early signing day, but for now, I'm expecting the Texas 2025 tight end class to feature Townsend and Winston.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Current commits: San Francisco (Calif.) St. Ignatius College Preparatory three-star John Mills, Cedar Hill three-star Jordan Coleman, Port Neches-Groves three-star Jackson Christian, Cedar Hill three-star Devin Coleman

Kyle Flood has operated in the 2025 cycle just like he did in the previous cycle: get the bulk of OL commitments in the summer before focusing on the main priority targets. It's worked well, as Flood currently holds four commitments from four big humans. Mills and Jordan Coleman have tackle/guard versatility and should be thought of as swing takes for now. Devin Coleman will play guard. And last but not least, the State Champion PNG Indian Christian will play either guard or center.

Main targets: Lewisville five-star Michael Fasusi, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) John F. Kennedy four-star Nick Brooks

Flood settled in on Fasusi being the No. 1 offensive line target early on in the cycle and as it progressed the prioritization of the Lewisville five-star hasn't changed a bit. The Longhorns are firmly entrenched in a battle with their Red River Rivals for both schools' No. 1 O-linemen on the board and the decision is expected to be for either Oklahoma or Texas when Fasusi decides on a commitment date in the month of August. A top three with a commitment date should be released by Fasusi sooner or later with Horns247 expecting Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M to make up the three finalists. Crystal Balls remain in favor of the Longhorns for Fasusi and I'm still leaning towards the Burnt Orange, but things have gotten close with the Sooners and I'm not as confident in Texas' chances as I was earlier in the year.

Brooks on the other hand is a bit of a wildcard and doesn't have a strict timeline, or at least one that people know about. With a decision expected to come down to Georgia, Texas, and USC, it's hard to get a great read of where things stand with the Iowa native. Georgia is who most expect to be the eventual winner of the recruitment, but Texas and USC are still in the thick of it as well. To add to that, there's been increasing optimism talking to sources close to the recruitment about Texas' chances since the OV. If Texas misses on Fasusi, I'd feel much better about UT's chances here but that has to happen here.

Other names: N/A

Lamont Rogers committed to Missouri over Oklahoma over the weekend and Texas finished third or fourth with Texas A&M depending on who you talk to. Sources close to the recruitment don't see it being final until early signing day, and believe that if the Longhorns were to miss on Fasusi then they'd have a great opportunity to flip Rogers from the Tigers. Missing on Fasusi would obviously have to happen first but we'll cross that bridge if we get there.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Current commits: N/A

Main targets: Bellville four-star DJ Sanders

Interior defensive line is where the Longhorns have had the roughest go of things over the last couple of weeks. Several targets have committed elsewhere, on top of longtime commitment Brandon Brown flipping to LSU. While DJ Sanders is the main target at the moment, with Texas battling programs like Michigan and Texas A&M for his commitment, he won't be the only interior defensive lineman UT works to take. Whether they have to dip into the portal again this offseason, try and flip some recruits, or make some new senior year evaluations, there's still a ways to go at the position group. We feels Texas has the best odds for Sanders at the moment, though.

Other names: Folsom (Calif.) four-star Josiah Sharma (Oregon commits), Port Charlotte (Fla.) four-star Myron Charles (FSU commit), Greensboro (Ga.) Greene County four-star Kevin Wynn (FSU commit), Lufkin four-star Zion Williams (LSU commit), Richmond three-star Chace Sims (Texas A&M commit)

This is a summation of the recruiting hits Texas has taken along the defensive line since the end of June. With the exception of Sims, who Texas has yet to press for, Sharma, Charles, Wynn, and Williams were all top targets that picked elsewhere. While nothing is done until pen is put to paper on Dec. 4, Texas will face uphill battle with commitments already made. One source said Sharma will remain in communication with the Longhorns, despite his last second switch to the Ducks. The same source didn't express as much optimism with Texas staying involved with Charles, or even Wynn for that matter. But we'll see. Williams still has an official visit to use if he decides to keep the door open on his recruitment. He cancelled his Texas OV June 21-23 before committing to LSU this past Thursday. Sims could be an interesting one if UT starts to show more interest this fall.

EDGE
Current commits: Pleasant Grove four-star Lance Jackson, Alief Hastings four-star Smith Orogbo

We saw some potential finality to edge recruiting efforts in the month of June. The Longhorns have held Jackson's commitment since January, and he's not going anywhere. Orogbo joined the class on July 1 over Oklahoma and Texas Tech, and appears solid. Beyond that, any other edge targets Texas was working on have committed elsewhere, like Hayden Lowe (USC), Marco Jones (Texas A&M), Javion Hilson (Florida State), and Isaiah Gibson (Georgia). Could Texas call it a day here? I could see it. The portal is there if not.

Main targets: N/A

Other names: N/A

LINEBACKER
Current commits: Skyline four-star Elijah "Bo" Barnes

Barnes joined the Longhorns in April and is about as solid a commit as one could hope for in this era in recruiting. The Skyline standout is actively working on bringing more talent to Texas, including at the linebacker position. He is and has been one of UT's biggest priorities on the position and UT was able to get it done in the spring.

Main targets: San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) J Serra Catholic four-star Madden Faraimo, North Crowley three-star Jonathan Cunningham

With Texas missing on Riley Pettijohn to Ohio State over the weekend, more focus settles in on Faraimo and UT trying to swing the momentum away from Notre Dame. There's growing belief that the Longhorns have given Faraimo pause on the Fighting Irish, and USC is still involved as well, although didn't get an official visit from the local linebacker to this point. After his official visit to Texas, Faraimo said he was going to take a couple of weeks to look back on his recruitment and try to work towards a decision. As Jordan Scruggs reported, Cunningham will announce a decision on July 12, with Texas trending since his official visit. Utah and TCU are still involved.

Other names: Aldine Nimitz three-star Javar Thomas, San Clemente (Calif.) four-star Matai Tagoa'i (USC commit)

Thomas has been talking to Texas on and off since Johnny Nansen came on board earlier this year. There hasn't been any push on the Texas end to this point, but if it comes to it, Thomas would more than likely listen to the home-state program. Baylor has been a trendy pick of late. Tagoai was going to officially visit Texas in June while committed to USC. He called that off the week of. USC has taken some punches on the recruiting trail. If that combines with a rough 2024 season, could Tagoai have second thoughts? Right now he's solid with the Trojans. Jordan Scruggs published an excellent linebacker breakdown of names that could get some attention this fall.

CORNERBACK
Current commits: Hightower four-star Kade Phillips, Fort Bend Marshall three-star Caleb Chester

Phillips stopped the recruiting bleed for Longhorns on Saturday night, pledging to UT over LSU. He's ranked as a cornerback but can play any spot in the secondary. Don't be surprised to see him get a look at safety first. Chester was the first summer pledge for the Longhorns in early June. A longtime target, he picked UT over Texas A&M and others. A physical cover corner, Chester has some of the best work ethic in the class.

Main targets: Ruston (La.) three-star Aidan Anding, Buford (Ga.) four-star Devin Williams (Auburn commit)

Anding was considered a Texas lean exiting June. In fact a commitment date was set earlier this month. Then LSU offered. Anding called off his commitment ceremony indefinitely and set a visit to Baton Rouge for later this month. We'll see if it's a little too late, but for now Anding is listening and this is a Texas-LSU battle. Williams is committed to Auburn but officially visited Texas June 21-23. He said he was coming back this fall, too. I'm not expecting a flip at this point, but if he wants to keep coming back, Texas will welcome him.

Other names: Conroe five-star Dorian Brew (Oregon commit)

We would imagine Texas will keep the lines of communication open with Brew if it's reciprocated. Brew marked another big win for the Ducks to start the month of July.

SAFETY
Current commits: N/A

Main targets: Galveston Ball five-star Jonah Williams, Mansfield Timberview three-star Nathan Tilmon

Texas helped its efforts with the Longhorns baseball team hiring Jim Schlossnagle as head coach. As has been noted many times, baseball is a big part of Williams' decision, and he had been trending to the Aggies. Oregon has garnered more buzz in this one as well. It will all come down to whether Williams makes a decision this summer or waits until the fall. If he waits, Texas could get him in on an official visit and make things interesting. Tilmon earned an offer at the beginning of June while committed to SMU. He's since backed off that pledge. Texas and Utah are the main two programs standing for the in-state DB that Texas hosted on a mid-week official visit last month. We like Texas' chances at this point in time.

Other names: N/A

ATHLETE
Current commits: N/A

Main targets: Alamo Heights five-star Michael Terry III

Texas offered Terry on Jan. 20 and immediately vaulted into his top three. Things went a little quiet throughout the spring after that, but ahead of the summer we saw Texas make a renewed effort at the 6-foot-3, 217-pounder. Where will he play in Austin? Really anywhere, which makes him all the more intriguing of a prospect. Some schools are focusing on one spot, like wide receiver, whereas Texas thinks he can play multiple areas on offense, and even defense if it ever came to that. The Longhorns and Oregon are battling for Terry, with Horns247 leaning Texas at the moment.

From Chad Simmons (national guy at On3)

4-star LB Madden Faraimo

The buzz: Madden Faraimo wants to end his recruitment as soon as he can. He was quietly eyeing a decision last week, but the San Diego (Calif.) J Serra linebacker held off. That was a positive for Texas. Heading into that last official visit to Austin, the buzz was heavy around Notre Dame. USC isn’t going away either, and they have to be considered a contender, but Faraimo looked to be a lean to the Irish. That official visit to Texas opened his eyes. A decision this month is now unlikely, and he could end up taking a couple of more visits before he makes his decision. Faraimo is big on family and he has been around a lot of family members over the past week and he is working to make a decision. He just isn’t there there and there is a tight battle for that top spot.

The comparisons to last year continue to be off-base.

Last year we were coming off of 5-7 and 8-5 seasons. Recruits were in wait-and-see mode on us, and Sark was telling everyone to watch how good the team would be that season. We then beat Alabama, won the Big 12 and made it to the CFP, after which Black, Filsaime, Mack, Butler, and Smith jumped on board.

Recruits are not in wait-and-see mode on us anymore. We're not missing on guys because they want to see us prove it on the field this year, we're missing on guys because of self-inflicted fuckups. And there's a big difference.

We shall see. Florida and A&M imploded that was 3 of 5. Oregon lost a coach a few years ago. Worthy became available, because Michigan couldnt get him in early.  I have no idea how it will work out, but the idea that the recruiting is static is nonsense. I am not sure Texas has reached a level where they are a known commodity. They had 1 year in the last 5.

He takes his Level 1 source below to lunch practically every day, and even bought him those sneakers.  (Not sure about the flower bouquet ... )

Can you actually make this case, though? I mean, I know you can, but can you make it coherently for any position other than DT?

Of the non-DT commits elsewhere, I can't think of a real miss this cycle other than maybe Armstrong and eventually Anding. Otherwise, we've been intentionally passing on NIL requirements or passing in favor of other prospects. I like Pettijohn a lot, but they prioritized Faraimo. The staff does not like Jonah Williams as a prospect and we never actually offered Russell. We circled back on Rogers after Fasusi showed his ass and will work from behind. Could we have kept him warmer? Sure, but there wasn't much time there. Brew and Moore fall into the unwilling to match the fuckducks category.

And I can disagree with any/all of it, but my disagreement re: eval and prioritization doesn't make it a miss.

DT, I agree. That's all fuck up.

DT was a disaster. I have a hard time saying it was because of poor individual recruiting efforts.

Here are the visits:

Sanders (uncommited)

Kevin Wynn

Brandon Brown

Myron Charles

Josiah Sharma

They tried to get Zion in..

Texas wanted to get 4 DTs in this class. They zeroed on 6 DTs. 4 of those were OOS national recruits. Sanders is probably the only one "Texas should win".  That was just unrealistic. Sark set Baker up for failure.

On the surface the big screw up in DT recruiting was only seriously targeting 6 to this point.

I have no idea why they did they if they want to build numbers, but the only thing I can think of is Sark doesn't want "Max Merrill" situations anymore and just isn't going to offer guys he thinks are likely busts who will eat up a roster spot and resources but never contribute. So they went all in on their top 6 national guys, then after striking out on at least 5 in the pre-season recruiting period they'll double back on senior risers in the HS class and of course portal guys. I'd keep an eye on any quality DT at places like Arkansas or Florida that have lame duck coaches for the December transfer window. I would think if it comes to it Sark will go full blast NIL for the DTs he wants in the portal this December.

I don't know if it's the best way to go about it, but from a strictly observational perspective it seems the strategy Sark is taking at pretty much every position except QB.

So are you saying that they needed “more shots on goal… If that makes any sense. Um… uhhh… hey!”?

And then, to thoroughly mix the metaphors, our coaches can keep trying to "hang around the rim."

I could see it, maybe. Sanders. 1 in state late riser. 1 flip from a program that fires their HC in season.

The OOS late risers are going to be extremely competitive. Even the mighty Saban liked to circle back on these guys, and every SEC Program is going to have holes to fill in their class.

We’ve seen what premium portal DT recruiting has become.

They want 4, but I think they’ll only sign 3. No idea what will happen in the portal.

No harm in keeping Moore's mama's number then after Stein leaves following the '24 season and he sees in spring '25 Oregon's QB situation isn't looking top quality you can give her a call. Let her know her baby has a spot waiting for him once he sees he was sold a bill of goods that wasn't true.

Meh, I prefer we move on, win a ton of championships, watch our players win awards and get paid a ton in the NFL as he sits in Eugene just thinking what could’ve been.

Oh God, I can already see this shit turning into Evan Stewart 2.0. I am going to have to see people jonesing for him ever time the portal opens.

I don't think his mom is exactly in our camp. She's supposed to be a lot to deal with.

Moore will cave when it comes to signing day and the season.

Sark would sell his soul for Moore, but if our class falls into place with the two five stars and the San Antonio athlete, I think at this point that I'd rather keep that in place than get Moore and deal with the resultant turmoil.

I do not disagree with this at all.
