Most impactful recruiting flips in the last 25 years

It's getting close to flip time for the Texas Longhorns in the 2025 cycle. And that means it's a good time to take a stroll down memory lane. This morning, OnTexasFootball takes a look at the most impactful flips in the last 25 recruiting classes dating back to Mack Brown's No. 1 ranked recruiting class of 1999.

1. Chris Simms - 1999 class
Gatorade National Offensive Player of the Year flipped from Tennessee to Texas, and that was monumental for Mack Brown in his first full recruiting class. Texas signed the No. 1 class, and the perception of Texas instantly changed.

2. Kelvin Banks - 2022 class
The Humble Summer Creek 5-star left tackle flipped from Oregon to Texas after Mario Cristobal took the Miami job. This was massive for Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood, as they never moved off of top targets after some tough early recruiting losses in the 2022 cycle. It was a foreshadow of Sark's recruiting approach at Texas.

3. Xavier Worthy - 2021 class
The Fresno (Calif.) Central 4-star WR signed with Michigan, was released from his LOI and flipped to Texas. Was the first huge recruiting win for Steve Sarkisian at Texas.

4. Anthony Hill - 2023 class
The Denton Ryan 5-star LB flipped from Texas A&M to Texas. The Aggies had the momentum in the state by and large, and this flip was massive for Sarkisian and staff in DFW.

5. The 2005 class had two big ones
Killeen Shoemaker 4-star DL Roy Miller flipped from Oklahoma to Texas, and Diboll High 4-star TE and two-sport star Jermichael Finley flipped from Arizona to Texas.

6. Caden Sterns - 2017 class
The Cibolo Steele High 5-star safety flipped from LSU to Texas, and was big at the time as Tom Herman and staff were fighting for momentum against SEC schools recruiting in Texas.

7. Mike Davis - 2010 class
The Dallas Skyline 4-star WR flipped from LSU to Texas, and was key in Mack Brown's 2010 class gaining added momentum into a No. 2 class ranking finish.

8. Jevan Sneed - 2006 class
The Stephenville High 4-star QB flipped from Florida to Texas. At the time, this was a huge flip for Texas, as Longhorn nation didn't know that Colt McCoy would become a legend and Hall of Honor inductee.

9. Colton Vasek - 2023 class
The Austin Westlake 4-star EDGE and Texas legacy flipped from Oklahoma to Texas shortly after the Longhorns 49-0 win in the Cotton Bowl. This one was very big for the Texas fan base. And Vasek is on track to end up being a very good player, as well.

10. Byron Murphy - 2021 class
It wasn’t a national headline maker, but the flip of the DeSoto High 3-star from Baylor to Texas ended up being a huge one for the Longhorns rebuild.

11. Cameron Williams - 2022 class
The Duncanville High 4-star right tackle flipped from Oregon to Texas after Mario Cristobal took the Miami job. Kelvin Banks and Cameron Williams, along with the signing of the 2022 OL class changed the trajectory of Steve Sarkisian's rebuild in Austin.

12. Cameron Rising - 2017 class
The Newberry Park, Calif. 4-star QB flipped from Oklahoma to Texas. Tom Herman flipped a QB commit from Lincoln Riley. Head scratcher by the Rising family, but was huge at the time for momentum and the hated rivalry.

13. Jordan Elliott - 2016 class
The Houston Westside 4-star DL flipped from Michigan to Texas, and that was huge at the time. Of course, the now NFL defensive lineman flipped more than Simone Biles in a floor routine throughout the process.

14. Two in the 2020 class that have been very impactful
It wasn’t big nationally at the time, but Frisco Lone Star 3-star ILB Jaylan Ford flipped from Utah to Texas. Jahdae Barron was released from his Baylor LOI after a coaching change in Waco, and flipped to Texas.

15. Two more big ones in the 2022 class
Lacrosse star and Austin Westlake fast rising full time football player Ethan Burke flipped from Michigan to Texas. Little Elm 4-star DB Terrance Brooks flipped from Ohio State to Texas on signing day.

Honorable mention
Poona Ford - 2014 class
The Hilton Head (S.C.) High 4-star DL flipped from Louisville to Texas after Charlie Strong was hired in Austin.

Devin Duvernay - 2016 class
The Sachse High speedster and 4-star was released from his LOI to Baylor and signed with Texas after the Art Briles downfall in Waco.

DeAndre Moore - 2023 class
The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco 4-star WR flipped from Louisville to Texas over Georgia.

Torshiro Davis - 2012 class
Flipped from LSU to Texas

Adrian Colbert - 2012 class
Flipped from Baylor to Texas

PJ Locke - 2015 class
Flipped from Oregon to Texas

Bru McCoy - 2018 class
There were some flips, and Texas was one of them.

2024 Class flips to follow
Tyanthony Smith - Jasper High
The 4-star LB flipped from Texas A&M to Texas after Jimbo Fisher was shown the 75 million dollar door

Xavier Filsaime - McKinney High
Four-star safety Filsaime flipped from Florida to Texas.

Wardell Mack - Marrero (La.) John Ehret
The New Orleans area 4-star flipped from Florida to Texas.

I’m assuming Vasek was put at 9 ahead of Murphy and Williams because it was a tougher recruiting battle, but that’s still a choice

All flips are not created equal in my eyes. Flips when coaching changes happen or a team goes into the shitter are a little bit different than recruits flipping because they are divas. Ewers flipping to Ohio State when he saw that Tom Herman wasn't going to make it or Banks flipping when Christobel moved on or whatever the hell is going on at Florida State right now... those are business decisions.

He committed to us the second he got an offer. UH was clearly his safety school and he was going to "flip" if he got something better. Kind of different from flipping guys from Oregon, LSU, etc.

People take some of the comments too literally. Not all flips are created equally. Huge difference between a recruit flipping because of a major change (i.e Cam and Banks) and someone that has been to 3 High Schools and had 3 different random recruitments. Context matters

Its a weird list....some of them are clearly there for momentum they brought to the class....but if that was the case Vasek would be way lower...conversly if its actual program production and impact.....Stearns should in no way be that high. He was good as a freshman but wholly forgettable after that.

Three recruiting percentages to update

The Texas Longhorns No. 5/6 recruiting class is headed towards a top 3 class, with a No. 2 finish a possibility.

Steve Sarkisian and staff are working with the most recruiting momentum at Texas in quite some time, and there are three prospect OnTexasFootball continues to feel good about above all others.

Javion Hilson, EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.) High

The one time Alabama and Florida State verbal is scheduled to be in Austin this weekend for an unofficial visit. Texas is considered the heavy favorite for the 4-star++ EDGE prospect out of the Sunshine State. Hilson, 6-4 and 230'ish, has mentioned making visits throughout the season. OTF continues to believe that is not a lock.

OTF % for the Horns: 75%

Michael Terry III, ATH, San Antonio (Texas) Alamo Heights

The 4-star++ athlete is a Texas vs. Nebraska battle with Oregon still in communication. Nebraska has made this one very tough on the Horns, as the Cornhuskers are completely all in. Texas is also all in on Terry, as he's considered an extremely talented and versatile prospect.

OTF % for the Horns: 75%

Chace Sims, DL, Richmond (Texas) Randle

The Texas A&M verbal will make an official visit to Texas this weekend with his family. This one simply comes down to the weekend visit, and most important the in person conversations with Steve Sarkisian, Kenny Baker and defensive staff. This will be the first time for those in person convos since there wasn't a June official visit.

OTF % for the Horns: 80%

I like those percentages

Well, apart from medicine, irrigation,
health, roads, cheese and education,
baths and the Circus Maximus,
what have the Romans ever done for us?

Gerry said this morning there's 1 uncommitted "Hi" left. Aren't the only two uncommitted guys we've been recruiting long enough to have a silent from Terry and Faraimo?

I can't see Faraimo as a silent so I'm guessing he means Terry.

Javian Hilson is also not committed at the moment.

So he technically removed himself from FSU? I guess he could mean that but it still feels like a flip. I was thinking he meant hasn't committed yet, but I could be reading that wrong.

Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng? I know he was a Notre Dame lean but he's not committed and was fairly high on our list.
