Just like any free agency in sports - the market is what people are willing to pay.  There is usually one idiot willing to overpay because that's the one player they need to win it all or whatever delusions they can create.   The fair market rate is never what the idiot is willing to pay.  Sure agents will go the following year and claim what idiot paid Player A is now the new market and we want a deal that beats that one, but that is not the market because of the idiot or the claim by the agent.

Texas has been a sophisticated purchaser for three years running now.  They are well aware of the market for any position/player they have been interested in.  Oregon, Aggie, Florida, whomever can always come in last second and try to throw money at their problems.  We then have a choice - pay more for that particular player or just pay the market rate for the next kid on the list or the next kid in the portal.  We typically always choose the ladder.  That doesn't mean Texas is not willing to pay the market rate.  Just that it won't overpay out of desperation.

Just to add to this - It seems to me that after we struck out on DL early in the cycle, we adjusted to the "market". So, we have already adjusted. Now, as you state, there are a few crazies trying to shore up their class, but that isn't the market and trying to compete can cause problems with not just this class but with our current roster and future classes.

One thing to remember here is that Texas doesn’t always ignore the lunatic shit. They’ve never been the lunatic, thankfully, but they have decided to beat them on multiple occasions. Retaining Worthy when Riley offered $1M wasn’t done via reassuring conversations with X. Texas didn’t get Wingo signing on the line that is dotted by just poo-pooing Missouri. Muhammad is a budding star at Texas because Texas decided they didn’t see anyone of replacement value within reach.

I am not sure we don’t see some of that over the next few days. It won’t be explained to the board either way, at least any time soon, but you guys can stay hopeful, I guess.

I will say that if Texas lands Justus Terry, Texas decided to be the lunatic.

Interesting that USC is the player for Sharma. That program is a dumpster fire, more-so than Florida even, but I guess that isn't as important to some guys. And very few DL are capable as freshmen - I wonder if we will start going after redshirt freshmen or sophomores with little production or if we will continue to focus on upperclassmen who are somewhat established.

How an elite high school prospect could not see himself as an early contributor on a team that plays freshmen while competing for a national title and cranking out draft picks is beyond me. But I also realize a fatter check and/or the pull of playing closer to home can trump that for some guys. Teenagers still are teenagers.

Something else to consider is that the transfer portal has made the risk/reward for the athlete totally different.  If you’re trying to maximize NIL commitments and, say A&M, makes an offer you can’t refuse, now it’s comparatively painless to transfer to your second choice later.

TL:DR- a lot of high school athletes will make the decision based on NIL.  Transfers are probably more focused on depth chart and talent development (presumably because they are looking to upgrade on wherever they started, or in Bear Alexander’s case, where they ended up).

Often we're talking about life-changing money for these guys. "You can buy your momma a house" is an insanely powerful pitch. Sucks for us if a rival goes crazy for a player, but I'm never gonna question a guy for getting what he can get.

I have noticed that Texas is not overly reactive to these schools coming in with wild ass offers on guys. The offer comes in, there is a bunch of hooting and chest thumping by the opposing fan base, only to have Texas quietly make the issue go away. You never really knew when it happened, the talk just dies down. I expect that to happen here as we head into Wednesday with some of this noise. But I do understand if there is a lower ranked guy who peels from the class, especially if a school gets stupid with an offer.

Important note about Nebraska/Malcolm Simpson

Jordan Scruggs (247 Sports)

The Longhorns still seem to be waiting on the transcript from Simpson, but if they do happen to offer between now and when Simpson signs, it'll be a much easier flip attempt then it would've been before.

That's because within the last hour news has broke that Florida State has hired Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White for the same position in Tallahassee. White is also reported to be bringing along Terrance Knighton who was the Huskers' DL coach and Simpson's primary recruiter to be Florida State's DL coach as well.

As far as an offer to Simpson goes, if it was going to happen part of me feels like the offer would've been extended by now, but with Joseph Mbatchou flipping to Florida yesterday and the need of DL growing even more after that development we could perhaps see Simpson land an offer from Texas here shortly.

Texas will always have a seat at the table when it wants/needs it. Wingo was a great example as is Baker at OT. That said there is a finite amount of $ and no need to overpay for above avg talent.

I don't see a point in throwing big money at a high school prospect that isn't comparable to Anthony Hill/Colin Simmons/Kelvin Banks i.e. a Day 1 contributor

Because it is still important to have complete classes. There seems to be somewhat of a correlation between recruiting and results on the field. To your point though, I think if it is going to cost $1M to keep Sharma, that money is better going to Justus Terry.

If I'm not mistaken Michigan is the only national champion in a long time to not have a top 5 recruiting class on their roster construction.

We're on the homestretch to National Signing Day. And it looks very different this year. Recruits will put pen to paper this upcoming Wednesday, Dec. 4 though Friday, Dec. 6. The window is bumped up by a few weeks, dramatically changing the recruiting calendar for coaching staffs. On top of that, the Transfer Portal window opens in one week on Dec. 9. All the while the Longhorns staff is prepping for the SEC Championship Game against Georgia on Saturday.

Texas enters the week with the No. 4-ranked class, per the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, with 23 commitments. We could see the Longhorns vault significantly in the coming days. By how much remains to be seen.

Here, Horns247 breaks down where things stand with each of the Longhorns' remaining six key targets down the stretch.

These aren't the only names to watch, but the ones Texas is most in play for with 48 hours to go until the National Signing Day window opens.

Justus Terry, 5-star DL, Manchester (Ga.)
— Manchester (Ga.) five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry has been the highest ranked uncommitted prospect going back to mid-October, and he'll hold onto that title a few more days than some might've expected the nation's No. 9 overall prospect will be announcing his college decision on Friday Dec. 6 at noon EST.

With Terry keeping things close to the vest, the majority of folks tapped into the recruitment assume Georgia leads but as we all know, assumptions are dangerous in college football recruiting and especially in this era of NIL and the transfer portal. Although many assume the decision will be in favor of Georgia, Auburn, Texas, and Alabama to an extent all believe as if they're in striking distance of the nation's No. 2 defensive line prospect with decision day set for Friday.

Under Steve Sarkisian the Longhorns have pulled off signing day stunners in the past, but this one would be the most meaningful of the bunch if Texas can pull it off due to the need at the position and the caliber of talent Terry has as a prospect. Although Horns247 is still leaning Georgia and is by no means expecting it to happen as things currently stand on Monday Dec. 2, Terry is a legitimate possibility for the Longhorns as the Burnt Orange work over the next few days to take down the Bulldogs' assumed lead ahead of a rematch for the SEC title on Saturday. — SCRUGGS

Michael Terry III , 5-star ATH, San Antonio (Texas) Alamo Heights
— We're less than 48 hours away from the start of the Dec. 4-6 early signing period beginning and I still don't have a firm, solidified date or time for when San Antonio Alamo Heights five-star athlete Michael Terry III plans to announce his college decision. However, I still love the chances of Terry ending up with the Longhorns.

Kobe Black was a recruitment that was somewhat boring to cover the tale end of due to Black being such a heavy Texas lean for such a long period of time. This recruitment feels the exact same in the way that there hasn't been much new information in quite some time and that Texas has been the steady leader since the summer. That said, if the decision is made on Wednesday or kept quiet until the Navy All-American Bowl in early January or announced at any point in between, I still love the Longhorns' chances of adding the nation's No. 1 overall athlete prospect to their top five ranked 2025 recruiting class. As of right now on Sunday night I'm currently expecting the decision to come on Wednesday.

Regardless of when a decision is publicly announced, Terry will have to sign binding documents this week as he is set to graduate high school this month and move into his college of choice early next month as an early enrollee. I'm also told Terry is weighing potentially participating in bowl practices, but he would of course have to sign and announce his decision first before suiting up for a college bowl practice. Nonetheless, with less than 48 hours until early signing day, Horns247 loves our Texas crystal balls for Terry no matter when a decision is made. — SCRUGGS

Michael Fasusi, 5-star OT, Lewisville (Texas) -- Oklahoma commit
Five-star offensive tackle and Oklahoma commit Michael Fasusi remains the biggest flip opportunity for the Longhorns ahead of Wednesday. The Sooners want to hang on to the Lewisville (Texas) product, but both Texas and Texas A&M are making it hard on Brent Venables and staff. And with the OU staff somewhat in limbo on the offensive side of the ball, both the Longhorns and Aggies are set to pounce.

We've reported on Horns247 for weeks that there's been a quiet confidence about Texas being able to win out here from speaking with sources. There's similar buzz about Texas A&M in recent weeks. It's appearing more and more likely that Fasusi won't end up with Oklahoma after visiting both Austin and College Station in back to back weeks, something Venables said classifies a recruit as not committed.

Texas is all hands on deck in working to flip Fasusi, including both Kyle Flood and Tashard Choice, among others, working on the talented five-star in the closing days.

This will likely come down to National Signing Day before we have any finality to it, but Texas is very much alive in this one. — SOUTH

Kellen Wiley Jr. , 4-star LB, Seffner (Fla.) Armwood
Texas worked quickly in this one. After Pete Kwiatkowski offered the talented four-star linebacker, the Longhorns quickly got an official visit on the calendar for Florida weekend. At the time, Miami was viewed as the main challenger to the Longhorns and their efforts to add a third linebacker. After that visit to Austin alongside his parents, this recruitment began shifting to Burnt Orange. Wiley didn't end up officially visiting Miami two weekends ago, instead opting to unofficially visit Florida. The Gators, Maryland and the Hurricanes are the primary competition, but we believe Texas has set itself apart in this one. Wiley will announce a decision Wednesday. — SOUTH

Nate Marshall, 4-star EDGE, Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick -- Auburn commit
A surprise add to the official visitors list for Kentucky weekend, the Longhorns would love to flip the Auburn pledge. Speaking with sources near the recruitment, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of concern on the Tigers' end about where Marshall stands with his pledge. He already flipped once from Michigan to Auburn earlier in the cycle.

One source near UT was a little bit more optimistic classifying it as a coin flip type of situation, but that's about as positive about Texas' chances as you''re going to find speaking with sources.

Again, Marshall has a spot if he wants it. Texas wouldn't have brought him in for an OV if he didn't. However, we don't like the chances of a flip at this point in time. — SOUTH

Javion Hilson, 4-star EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.)
Entering the weekend, Texas A&M was trending for Hilson, per sources. The Longhorns aren't laying down, though. Texas will continue to push to try and add Hilson to the fold on Wednesday, and have plenty going for it, especially considering the Longhorns just bullied the Aggies on primetime television, putting on a defensive clinic at Kyle Field.

Hilson said Texas was his No. 2 team in the summer while committed to Florida State. With his recruitment reopened this fall, the Longhorns by default began trending. But it was more than that, sources had optimism around the chances to pickup the elite edge rusher. The only caveat to that was he intended on waiting until Dec. 4, leaving the door open for other programs to stay involved. Outside of A&M, Michigan and Missouri have been pressing down the stretch as well.

While the Aggies have picked up momentum, Texas still has a shot here. I wouldn't predict him in the final class at this point in time, but perhaps by Wednesday we will again. — SOUTH

Bonus update: Micah Hudson, Texas Tech wide receiver transfer
— Yesterday Texas Tech true freshman and former five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson announced he intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal upon the window opening on Dec. 9. Hudson will have three seasons of eligibility left.

If you want the full back story on how things unfolded with Hudson choosing Texas Tech out of high school, click HERE for all of that info.

We're gonna have to wait exactly a week longer before reporting anything of true substance as it's illegal for schools and their staffs to communicate with Hudson until he's actually entered the portal which won't be possible till next Monday.

Hudson will take his time with making a choice and plans to take a few visits before coming to a decision. The former five-star will keep his options wide open and although it's still early in the process as he obviously still needs to actually enter the portal, after speaking with Hudson several times over the last few weeks I am under the impression Texas is one of a select handful of programs he actually has interest in and could see himself playing at.

The most important thing for Hudson when it comes to making the decision on his next destination is getting developed into a high NFL draft pick while playing for a program that's legitimately competing for the National Championship year in and year out. If Texas is able to push the right buttons, Hudson is very much a realistic portal possibility for the Longhorns.

As far as the player goes, I've seen plenty of folks online point out how Hudson's freshman year production of eight receptions for 123 receiving yards on 15.4 yards per catch isn't stellar when remembering Hudson was a five-star prospect ranked as high as the No. 4 receiver in the nation. Hudson accumulated those stats from eight game appearances but only caught passes in five of those games as he totaled only 107 snaps across the 2024 season.

The last game Hudson appeared in was when the Red Raiders played TCU in Fort Worth on Oct. 26. Injuries have been the main reason for that as Hudson suffered a lower leg injury in the back stretch of the season. Injuries also affected Hudson's start to his career in Lubbock as he missed all of spring ball after receiving surgery on his leg for an injury he suffered in the final game of his high school career.

Although I can't explain why Hudson didn't see more than just 107 snaps as a true freshman, I do still believe he can live up to his five-star ranking as a projected first round pick. I expect Hudson to end up at an elite power four program that's in the National Championship hunt, as I think several schools already share or will share my belief that Hudson can still live up to his five-star billing.

Stay tuned till Hudson is officially in the portal on Dec. 9, but as things currently stand with the knowledge I have of this situation, I do think Texas will be at or towards the top of Hudson's list as long as they have a certain interest level in the former five-star. — SCRUGGS

-- On top of the aforementioned targets, other guys like Oregon commit Dorian Brew, Ohio State commits Riley Pettijohn and Devin Sanchez, four-star defensive lineman Kevin Wynn are names we'll watch from a distance that Texas has been after at various times throughout the cycle. We don't expect them to sign with Texas on Wednesday, but it doesn't mean we're not keeping our head on a swivel in the event that something changes in their recruitments, or other recruitments as Wednesday draws closer.

I'm still amazed at what we were able to do spreading a little money around to DT transfers this year. I think it was Norton who straight up walked back a guard on one of the 4th down stops.

A fact likely not lost on any other school paying attention.  It’s going to be much more expensive to add DT depth this coming cycle.

I doubt it. Texas did well at DT due to scouting and evaluations. There was big money thrown around last cycle for DTs all over the place. Texas was interested in Grant, Graham, Williams, Alexander, the dude at UCLA, the UH guy that went to Oregon, etc. All of those guys went for the kind of money that lead to Texas not matching and seeking value elsewhere. We've already been to this movie.

Curious where we have Marshall on the board versus Hilson. I assume we will make it a priority to land one of them.

What am missing?  Is FSU that much of a dumpster fire?  I watched a few NU games this year and didn't think the D looked very good, so I just looked up the stats for his stints at both NU and Cuse, neither was that impressive.

Not sure why a raw talent like Mbatchou would switch from a place that has shown the ability to develop D-linemen to a place that just hired a lack-luster DC.  He, or his handlers would have to know that long-term development is worth more money than a slight bump in NIL your freshman year.

Oh well.  Guess I'm just bummed because I really wanted to see him at Texas.

That was my thought, too.

Looks like a similar body type to Lance Jackson.  I thought the Kwiatkowski defense tended to favor a bigger (more lengthy) DE paired with one a little more fast twitch on the other side.

I’m thinking that the floor has gone up, if not the ceiling.  Fifth year veterans like Bill Norton probably offer better 2026 value than all but the most elite high school prospects.

A Mbatchou/Sharma trade for a Terry/Marshall....how would yall rate that?

Losing two DTs for a WR and an Edge is not a good trade when you only have one other DT committed and he's also looking around a bit. So I'd rate that trade as pretty shitty.

Sharma and Mbatchou both have moved into multiple decommit territory, imo lowering the probability of becoming a high value impact player over time. Although I do recall vaguely that Mbatchou was a high character player, so maybe he still pans out. Who knows.
