So, sliding is like calling a fair catch?  But, they can hit him before he slides or faking a slide, since the slide has not commenced?

Once you begin the motion of a slide you are down from that spot. So when he fakes he is beginning the motion of the slide and should be ruled down at the spot. Refs missed it

I wouldn’t expect refs to catch something like that in real time if they’d never seen it before.

Unless a Texas QB pulled that move. Then they'd have caught it immediately.

The UT QB would have legit just stumbled and the refs would review the play, call it back, and then give a penalty

Yep. You can bet your ass if that was a longhorn QB in a big 12 game the touchdown would have been called back after review.

Apparently the NCAA Rules Committee clarified that the 'fake slide' the QB did was illegal and should have been blown dead on the spot.

Yes and now maybe our resident contrarians can settle down

Is it only a QB who is protected by this rule, or is any player wearing a skirt?

any player can give up on the play/ slide.  Most common time for non-QBs is defensive players making an INT to end the game or Offensive player trying to stay in bounds to keep clock running.

I’d be for just getting rid of the slide rule.  Possession receivers over the middle have figured out how to lay down after a catch without getting decapitated. The slide rule allows for taking advantage of the defense. If you want to be a ball carrier, take the hit, or fall down and don’t try to squeeze that extra half yard out of your run

Nah the rules committee is a bunch of pussies trying to destroy a once proud game, and turn it into flag football.

Exactly.  The rule itself is stupid and redundant.  Its sole purpose is to allow a ballcarrier in the open field to squeak out an extra half-yard without taking a hit.  Why?  If the ballcarrier doesn't want to get hit, the ballcarrier can go to the ground well before the defenders arrive.  If the ballcarrier wants that extra yardage, then the consequence, is getting hit.

But as long as the rule exists, then this is the way it must be called.  Faking a slide, is beginning a slide, is a dead ball.

At the college level, they really need to simplify the rules. At all levels, really when you can. Less subjectivity.

At college, they should eliminate this rule and revamp/point of emphasis on preventing defenders from punishing runners already down.

This. The first time somebody tries that move and it backfires there's going to be a massive shitstorm when he gets slept. Should be the same as a fair catch.
