Songs that could be movies

Kinda crossover from the Springsteen thread.

I opined that "The River" and Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" are two songs that could be adapted as screenplays.

What are some others?

For those heathens, here are the lyrics:

Lyrics

Wake up, Maggie, I think I got somethin' to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused, but I feel I'm being used
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that's what really hurts
The mornin' sun when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none, in my eyes, you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes, my love, you didn't need to coax
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul, and that's a pain I can do without
All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover, and mother, what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed, and in the morning, kick me in the head
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
'Cause you didn't wanna be alone
You stole my heart, I couldn't leave you if I tried
I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of playin' pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand
Oh, Maggie, I wished I'd never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart, but I love you anyway
Maggie, I wished I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home one of these days
Ooh, ooh, ooh

[Verse 3]
I got a job working construction
For the Johnstown Company

But lately there ain't been much work
On account of the economy

Now all them things that seemed so important
Well, mister, they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
And Mary acts like she don't care

[Bridge]
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night, on them banks, I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take

Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true?
Or is it something worse?

[Chorus 3]
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry

That sends me down to the river tonight
Ah-yah-yah
Down to the river
My baby and I
Oh, down to the river we ride

Ah-yah-ay

[Outro]
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh

About

The title track to his fifth studio album, Springsteen’s “The River” invokes his sister’s early life with her husband, Mickey. Even if the instrumental (i.e. the use of the harmonica, lack of E Street Band) makes this song quite different to the usual Springsteen song.

Rolling Stone describes the song as:

…filled with an uncommon common sense and intelligence that could only have come from an exceptionally warmhearted but wary graduate of the street of hard knocks.

Springsteen said the song was based on conversations he had with his brother-in-law. After losing his construction job, he struggled to find work to support his family. True to his up-bringing, he never complained. The shotgun wedding in the story refers to Springsteen’s sister, who married when she was just a teenager.

Like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger before him, Springsteen has often spoken out against inequality in the U.S. At a 1984 concert in Pittsburgh he said:
“There’s something really dangerous happening to us out there. We’re slowly getting split up into two different Americas. Things are getting taken away from people that need them and given to people that don’t need them, and there’s a promise getting broken.”

I have a feeling this has inspired many screenwriters.

I'd toss in Silent Lucidity/Queensryche.

And Richard Marx/Hazard.

And now you all have Richard Marx's Hazard running around in your head again.

You Are Welcome Rachel Brosnahan GIF by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Was going to post hazard...and backed out.

Seriously.  LOlz.

A couple of Reba McEntire songs seem ripe for this treatment:  Fancy and The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

Well, Fancy was originally a Bobbie Gentry song but I am guessing most people associate it with Reba.

There is already a musical drama movie The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia with a different plot than the song that Reba did.  Well, a different plot than the Vicki Lawrence song that Reba covered.  The movie has a fairly loaded cast:  Dennis Quaid, Mark Hamill, Kristy McNichol, Barry Corbin.

Given the subject matter of these two songs, I would think Hollywood would jump all over the chance to make them into something.

Springsteen could have his own chapter in this exercise.

Point Blank
Stolen Car
Racing In the Street
Incident on 57th Street
Highway 29
Dry Lightning
Cautious Man
Etc...

How about James McMurtry?
Angeline
Levelland
Across the Delaware

And of course Dylan's Tangled Up in Blue plays like a Scorsese fever dream.

She was working at a topless bar, I stopped in for a beer

This is a very long song. One of those songs you listen to late at night. By yourself. On your best headphones. When you should go to bed but your buzz is still a little too strong.

Actually they should make a movie about what led to the writing and recording of this song and how it was done.

Rose lived on the south side of town
Until her landlord showed up with two hundred dollar bills
A notice of eviction on the other hand
Now she don't live there no more
And everyone thinks he drowned

I pulled into Mecklenburg on them trains
Into a station that was flooded when they opened up the dams
And broke their connections to the railway lines
So they could blast into the quarry
And for every load of granite
We got a ton of worry

One night at the diner over eggs
Over easy she showed me the length of her legs
But that gold plated cross on her neck, it was real
And you don't get that kind of money from pushing meal
I should've told him that you were the one for me
But I lied, But I lied
To most any drifter whose looking for work is too weird

I met your sister and I married her in July
But if only to be closer to you, Caroline
Percy and I moved down the street
Until we lost two pretty girls
One was seven and one was three
Olderman and Caroline owned the house right up the hill
Where we laid those babies down
So they could still see our house

Suspicion got the best of old Alderman Haint
He owned an auto parts store off the interstate
But the lord took him home in July
And then Rose spilled the beans on the day that he died
And we was in trouble
I should've told him that you were the one for me
But I lied, But I lied
Tied up to concrete at the bottom of the quarry
With a tattoo on his heart that spelled out "Caroline"

He was silent but his rosary well it
Drifted into the custody
Of a sheriff that was just deputized
And I was down at the banquet hall
When two guys came up, pretty angry and drunk
And I'm still here at the banquet hall
At the banquet hall
Where the gun went off, in the Carolina Rain
In the Carolina Rain, in the Carolina Rain
Oh, Caroline

Always had an idea of using Send in the Clowns as a movie idea based on a comedian/talk show host(think Carson) in the twilight of their career and their fear of facing it.

Elton John - Yellow Brick Road

Spoiler

When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing
The blues, ah, ah
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
Ah, ah

What do you think you'll do then?
I bet they'll shoot down the plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you
On the ground, ah, ah
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
Ah, ah

  • 2 weeks later...
It didn't feel like Sunday
Didn't feel like June
When he met his silent partner in that lonely corner room
That over looked the marquee
Of the Plaza all-adult
And he was not looking for romance
Just someone he could trust

And it wasn't no way to carry on
It wasn't no way to live
But he could put up with it for a little while
He was working on something big

Speedball rang the night clerk
Said, "Send me up a drink"
The night clerk said "It's Sunday man, wait a minute
Let me think
There's a little place outside of town that might
Still have some wine"
Speedball said, "Forget it, can I have an outside line?
(Chorus)

It was Monday when the day maids
Found the still made bed
All except the pillows that lay stacked
Up at the head
And one said, "I know I've seen his face
I wonder who he is?
The other said, "Probably just another clown
Working on something big"

DBT/Isbell - Decoration Day, Elephant, Live Oak

Dave Alvin - King  of California

Tyler Childers - Long Violent History

I would add "Sinkhole" to the DBT list.

Like to invite him for some pot roast beef and mashed potatoes and sweet tea
Follow it up with some banana pudding and a walk around the farm
Show him the view from McGee Town Hill
Let him stand in my shoes and see how it feels
To lose the last thing on earth that's real
I'd rather lose my legs and arms
Bury his body in the old sink hole
Bury his body in the old sink hole
Bury his body in the old sink hole under cold November sky
Then damned if I wouldn't go to church on Sunday
Damned if I wouldn't go to church on Sunday
Damned if I wouldn't go to church on Sunday
And look the preacher in the eye.
