Can I find out what's eating the data at my house?

Got a text from the cable company last week that we have used up all of the data on our plan for December.   It has never happened before.  I called the cable company, and they say that we are on target to use 3x our average consumption for the past year.

I have a google mesh system.  Can I find out if somebody has gotten ahold of my password or something?  I have a tenant, and he's a bit of a dork, so I'm wondering if he's doing some bitcoin shit or something.  He's been here for a couple of years and it's never been an issue before.

Google explanation of process. Luckily you have Google mesh which tracks that by device.  When I had issues it was always kids, friends coming home over breaks and either downloading large games for PC/PS5 etc and/or iPhone cloud synching out of control:

I don't have a Google (or other brand) mesh setup, but they make it exceedingly easy to setup a guest SSID separate from your regular network.  Do you have that feature running?

So what's your monthly data limit? Because what you think is a lot and what we think is a lot maybe two different things.

Could simply be you all don't use much, but your tenant got a 4K TV and is streaming the shit out of 4K stuff.

Comcast provides me with 1.2TB monthly and I've never used more than 600GB. Works out to be unlimited for me.

Yeah that's a lot unless you're downloading games or torrenting movies and music and shit (or really, doing both).

I don't think there's a way for me to check what I use at home on google fiber but on my cell I use about 1GB per day which doesn't come close to touching 1TB. Granted I live alone - I'm guessing a lot of families of 4 or 5 climb up to or past 1TB. I mean... there are certainly months in my past where I would have blown past half a TB myself pretty easily. Whatever works I guess.

1.25 TB.  And yes, I really don't know if that's "a lot", but again, it's the increase in consumption that baffles me.

As has been said it could be high resolution streaming. It could also be downloading games - there are titles that are 200 GB themselves these days.

Or... illegally downloading porn/movies. But over a TB would be dozens if not hundreds of titles.

 I'd just ask your tenant.

Yeah, I mentioned it yesterday.  I parsed it as "hey, your a smart tech guy, what do you suppose could be happening?".

He pled ignorance.  But, he left today to go to his family in Germany for a few weeks, so I will monitor the consumption while he's gone and see what happens.

Is that what he told you?

You've clearly been compromised by a high-ranking, sleeper-cell Nazi intelligence officer. I'd gather what belongings you can before the time-travelling SS mecha warriors knock on your door.

Hope this message reaches you in time. Godspeed my friend.

Jesting aside - maybe it is him torrenting stuff and he's embarrassed about it. It shouldn't require much detective work to figure out if it's him or not. I'd just be like "look dude - you can't use up all of our data".

Is it like a guest house/garage apt. set up? You could always just set up a separate account and have him pay his own internet bill.

Yep.  He lives in a guesthouse, one of 2 on the property   His is small and isn't in great condition, but we only ask $700/mo for that unit, which is dirt fucking cheap.  The biggest problem is it doesn't have an attached bath.  He uses the pool bathroom.  If I could figure out a way to get a bathroom in there, I'd double the rent, but given the location of the sewer lines, it's not practical. He's a single guy, so he's very happy with the situation.
