Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what the teams roll out there. I keep hearing people referring to that model as being what the cars will look like this year. What they don't understand is that that's what the cars could look like, but it's just one possible interpretation of the rules.

Tommo on YT had what i think would be a not terrible idea for sprint races.  basically make them their own event, outside of the actual race - with points associated with both sprint + race.

Fri:

FP1 + RACE Quali

Sat:

FP2 + 1 shot Quali (for sprint race) + sprint race > so make the sprint it's own thing

Sun:

Race

If they have to do sprint races, that would be a great way to go imho ... much better than the current iteration.

Michael Masi’s role in doubt due to controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, says Formula One head

Talks are also progressing for F1 to stage a race in Las Vegas as early as next year

Michael Masi’s future as race director is in serious doubt after the new head of Formula One said he could be replaced or have his role split up.

The Australian was at the helm during the controversial final race of the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, in which the FIA did not correctly follow the rules.

The FIA has since launched an investigation which is being headed up by Peter Bayer, the new head of F1 at the sport’s governing body. His role is above that of the race director.

“Michael did a super job in many ways. We told him that,” Bayer said. “But also there is a possibility that there could be a new race director.” It was widely expected that Masi would lose his role, with Mercedes pushing for him to be removed after Lewis Hamilton lost out on an eighth world championship in Abu Dhabi when Masi allowed lapped cars between the English driver and Max Verstappen to be moved aside once the safety car had left the track, leading to a one-lap shoot-out between the two title rivals. Verstappen, who was on fresh tyres, overtook Hamilton to win the race and his first championship.

Hamilton, 37, has been silent since that race, amid speculation that he could retire. It is understood that he is waiting for the outcome of the investigation, due to be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council before the new season. With a new FIA president in place for this year after Mohammed Ben Sulayem was voted in, it is understood that several options have been explored, including having a panel of race directors on rotation, though this is unlikely to be supported by the teams as it could lead to an inconsistent interpretation of the rules, similar to the complaint made about the rotational use of race stewards.

The FIA is also considering the introduction of a deputy, as well as splitting the responsibility for the role across three people.

Bayer told the F1 journalist, Gerhard Kuntschick, that the FIA is looking at “dividing the various tasks of the race director,” which also include being the safety and track delegate, to “reduce the burden” on that person.

Formula One could stage a race in Las Vegas as early as next year with talks progressing about using the famous strip. Sin City has long been a target of F1 but talks have stalled in the past, in particular over the use of the city’s famous main street filled with casinos.

It is understood that the all-powerful Las Vegas casinos had previously been hesitant about the prospect of an F1 race on the strip as it had the potential to reduce their footfall.

The city is no stranger to hosting big sporting events, in particular boxing, though the fights are normally held inside the casinos, helping to bring more people to them.

However, it now appears that negotiations are moving in the right direction and there is a real possibility that Las Vegas could become the third United States race on the calendar next year, though with nothing yet signed it may take longer, as F1 has discovered before.

Miami will host its inaugural grand prix in May after a number of false starts, with a proposal for a street race there originally submitted in 2018 and scheduled for the next year. That was subsequently scrapped after local residents rejected the initial plans. It will now be held around the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, the NFL team.

There is also a race in Austin, Texas, in the second half of the year.

i think we had this discussion in another thread somewhere.  maybe a lawyerin' one?  i have a lot of docs that are automatically timestamped in the filename yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss.  most significant digits first.

Pretty good overview of the car changes for 2022 here, if anyone's interested.

I could not be more excited for the start of this season with the new reg changes.

I will probably feel differently when Merc qualifies a second ahead of everyone and Hamilton wins Bahrain by 20+ seconds.

Update | Mercedes refutes

According to Motorsport.com, Mercedes had failed
the crash test for the new Formula 1 season, but
Mercedes tells GPBlog that this is false: "We
completed homologation several weeks ago." They
did pass the test and have already received approval
from the FIA and Formula One. Mercedes is therefore
ready to present the new Mercedes W13 on February
18.

I'm sure they've passed it by now. Ferrari and Alpine both passed their tests months ago (October). With massive changes in the car rules, it would actually be very surprising if nobody had failed the tests, trying to determine the limits of what's possible while still satisfying the test. It could be that the story of RBR & Merc (or anyone else) failing the test was actually true - just a bit late. Just because a team has passed their test, that doesn't mean they didn't fail it prior to that. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if any team failed the test before eventually passing it.  You can fail the test over and over. You only have to pass it once for homologation.

But it's F1, so who knows.

Cringe. "Hop in Lewis. We tweaked the car until we were able to just barely pass the crash test. You're good to go."

I used to enjoy watching NASCAR for the big wrecks. Now I hold my breath when there is a crash. I thought that Grosjean crash I was watching someone die.

Seeing some stuff about this today.

Pullrod is harder to get to do what you want it to do, but since they now cannot raise the rocker mounts for a pushrod setup as high as they used to be able to, using it may be too big of a net negative, aero-wise.

Going back to this post, scarbs explains this in more detail.

HAAS is going to be first on track, unveiling their car tomorrow:

I've been reading that they've been having car build issues. It'll be interesting to see if they use the actual new car or if they just reveal the new livery on a show car.

ETA: That promo seems to be teasing Russian flag colors again.

The rumor last year of Merc partnering with Aramco turned out to be false (or at least the end result did not happen, but they could have talked).

However, AMF1 has now entered into a “strategic partnership” with them.

It looks like the Haas reveal will be a render of the actual 2022 car, with a physical reveal just before testing.

Glad to see the sprint cut by three. Now cut three more and we're in business.

As for the tire choice, I guess that's fine. Seemed like a fun wrinkle but not a make or break deal.

Should be no regs on tire use at all.  Wanna come into the pits for 37 tire changes? Sure.

Wanna try to go the distance on one set?  Knock yourself out.

Wanna qualify on one set and start on a different one?  Get down with your bad self.

Eliminating strategy options isn't good for the sport.

While we're at it, bring back refueling and apply zero rules to its frequency of use.

(I'm not talking about eliminating safety protocols of course)

Yeah there were several times last year when there were some different & very plausible tire strategy options that my kid & I thought would have made for very interesting viewing ... like going the race length on one set of tires.

One thing about the tire choice that I had never thought about until Alonso brought it up was that it entrenched the fastest teams' advantage, since they could often make through Q2 easily on the harder option tire while the rest were usually going to soft tires. The new way takes some of that advantage away, since everyone can now use whatever they want in Q2 and then use whatever they want to start the race. It was also often better to qualify P11 or 12 than P10 or 9, because P11 & 12 had tire choice. That'll be gone now, too.

Looks very generic to me. I think it's the white dominant color.

A little racist.... ;)

I don't mind white-dominant cars when they're done well.  The first Williams-Martini livery back in 2014 was absolutely beautiful and was predominantly white.

This Haas is not that, though.  Could be the blatant Russian flag, could be something else...
