If society is indeed a bell curve, then 50% of people are below average. A full third of them substantially so.  Our society is becoming increasingly economically stratified, so that the lower rungs get less and less and worse and worse opportunity.

What do we do with them? Just let them die in the street?

Fuck you, got mine.

Also, you are chalking too much up to luck. If you feel like you’ve contributed nothing to where you are, ok, but I’d bet that isn’t the case.  I don’t fault people for voting in their best interest. If we have that many can’t get right folks out there, well I assume D’s will be able to buy their votes for a good long while. If they can vote in their best interest, I think I should be able to as well.

There is a book called The Tyranny of Merit that I think you would benefit from reading.  Your posts remind me of myself from 7 years ago.

Yes, I found my calling in other avenues but still ended up directing them.  Only one of many examples, however, of how stupid easy it is to make money with plenty of degrees.

Of course not. Those who bust their ass and trade their souls for a paycheck will continue to make sure they are fed, bedded, and educated.  Hell some of us even get to share the neighborhood.

Except for 90% of the people voting for the GQP are not voting for their self interest. Somehow, the GQP has gaslighted them into thinking that they are voting in their self interest while increasingly making it easier for corporations and the 1% to build wealth at the expense of everyone else.

It’s an insult to women to suggest getting a thumbs down on a message board requires gynecological care for a troublesome period.

The harassment Penelope receives on this board is actually disgusting not to mention the regular occurrences of threats of violence and the virulent harassment almost all women are subjected to at some point or another all over the internet.

I’ve received absolutely scary threatening PMs here - one of which mentioned my personal Twitter account and the town I live in.

Fuck DonkeyDick and all the other manbabies who get all worked up AND TATTLE TALE TO AN ADMIN because a woman has the gall to give them A NEG ON A FUCKING MESSAGE BOARD.

This.  Amazing how big of titty babies most of them really are.  The key is that they are misogynists and do not like women who are not submissive.  Fuck them.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me anymore how quickly people abandon empathy for the perception (and rarely the reality) of saving a few hundred bucks a year on their tax return.

The last few pages is a pretty disappointing reminder of what we're dealing with and how effective Republican messaging is. Fatty is smarter than most, but it's still the usual "Democrats want free college for everyone, socialist healthcare, poor people to have free cell phones, and to take all of our guns!!!"

You really don’t get how civilization and society work do you?  I happen to be a Surly 1%er and I worked my tail off to get to this point.  After graduating UT with my BA degree it really didn’t come in too handy in the real world.   I struggled at the beginning, working shit jobs for like no money but I was able to work my way up that Ladder of Success.  I was fortunate that I came from a fairly well to do family so while I struggled, I knew that I always had that “safety net” from my family just in case things went south.  I knew I wouldn’t be living on the streets or anything.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of people that don’t have that backstop in their lives.   That is where local, state and federal governments come in to play.  They can be that safety net to make sure that a bunch of people don’t fall into the abyss.

Now you can argue that we should take care of everyone because we are good human beings.  That is part of it but honestly there is also a selfish reason the people that have done well in this country should make sure the people struggling are able to live good lives.  If we don’t then they can rise up and take out the wealthy (see French Revolution and many other examples) and destroy the world as we know it for everybody (rich/poor, young/old, R/D, etc…)  It’s really a neat thing that by helping people we can also help ourselves so everybody lives in a better and safer world.  Your worldview is really that of a simpleton and it is quite sad.

This mentality is just something I will never understand.  I am pretty well off and was born into a pretty good situation.  Yeah, I worked decently hard, but I'm well aware I've been given a TON of opportunity.  Way more than a lot of people.  That said, I can't fathom feeling like people in other walks of life don't deserve to have those same opportunities.  If that means those of us in positions like mine (or better) need to help them to that point, I have zero issue with that.  It only seems fair.

But there is this bizarre, almost gleeful, attitude in putting down those less fortunate and looking down on them with scorn and disdain.  I just don't get it.

Weird, the exact opposite happened. Seems like Putin was emboldened. This did not age well.

Lmao you continue to show your ass and build a case for a spot on the Mount Rushmore of dumbest posters on this entire site, including even the football board.

Yes, Putin is encroaching on Ukraine out of the blue, emboldened by Biden’s presidency. This has not been building for nearly a decade and our lord and savior Donald J Trump, noted for his hardline stance on Russian aggression would have prevented this!

I’d love to hear how exactly you think this should be handled.

This is easy to say in your position.  You were the one in the retirement thread saying you make 4-5 times those under you, that work 7 days a week, right?  And that you could easily afford to retire but haven’t because why not, hand over fist easy money right?  I don’t blame you one bit, you’ve earned it. But it sounds like you hold a lot more ability to immediately impact others lives, financially, and choose to continue to pile money. Yet so quick to judge others selfishness.  Weird.

I wouldn’t say that, ever. I’ve sacrificed literal years away from my children, not at the office, but on the other side of the world.  A smarter person could have done the same from home.  I largely participate in the political forums to read what the more intelligent posters post.

Maybe it’s the Democrats inaffective messaging?  Since college I have watched less than 3-4 hours of any cable news (airports maybe?).  I listen to sports radio, NPR, and every now and again Michael Berry in small doses.  My messaging comes from things linked here, and they wants/ideas/expectations from posters that follow politics closely.

I’ll look into it. I’m curious as to what changed for you, specifically 7 years ago.

I will say I would find the lecturing more to heart if it wasn’t coming from extremely well educated, mostly well to do, professionals.  I mean half of y’all participate in the look at my $10000 watch thread (one for each day of the week!!), another who just sold millions of dollars in family land, and several more who jetset across the world to vacation several times a year.  Y’all all work hard, I’m all for it. The gap between several of you and me is greater than mine and a 25 yo who can’t afford a house because they have school loans from UT. So a bit of perspective might be good for y’all, too.

The free phone program literally began with the Reagan administration creating a tax to subsidize phone plans for low income families in 1984. It was expanded in 2009 and didn’t cover smart phones.

Not one progressive cares that you hunt or go to skeet tournaments. Nobody is taking your grandpap’s gun or whatever love story you have for it.

Not one cares about your diesel truck that pulls livestock. Those companies will create their own energy efficient vehicles in their own.

Going to another location 10 minutes away to vote wasn’t an option for 2/3rds of Texas counties that don’t have countywide voting or poll centers.

Interesting you bring this up.  I do well and the people that are in lower levels that report to me probably work harder than I do at this point as their manager (just like I did when I was working my way up by the way).  It has nothing to do with me piling up money.  I donate tons of money to causes that help peoples lives on a daily basis and am very involved with tons of charity organizations that do the same so I am proud of what I give back to society and my impact on many peoples lives.  Not trying to brag but not sure what you are calling out with your post.  That I have people that work for me in a Fortune 500 company that work harder than I do at this point?  Yeah, I guess that’s the case but it has nothing to do with impacting society as a whole as those people that work for me are in the top 1% so I don’t feel too bad for them.  Many of their stories are that of people that had nothing and worked their way up.  My best employee (someone who has been with me for a decade and is like family to me) was a refugee form a war torn country that came to this country with nothing and now is a successful business person through hard work which is kind of the American dream I would think.

This is what, thank god, several insanely wealthy families coming out of the Gilded Age understood.  Roosevelts, Rockefellers, etc.  They had ZERO need to help out society, but they realized the tremendous influence they could have on the future of the nation.

I fear this mentality does not exist in our present time, at least not by most of those at the top (billionaires going to space and whatnot).  Sure, you've got the Gates Foundation and other charities, but we need people with massive power and money to influence our politics in a positive way for society, not the nightmare that is occurring right now.

It feels similar because “don’t get pregnant don’t do drugs go to work” demonstrates a similar middle/upper middle class disconnect about the realities a lot of people deal with as well as a disconnect about today versus 40 years ago. I would suggest that the “choose not to work” narrative is less reality and more something that has been fed to you. There are lazy shiftless people of all stripes, most people want to be productive and earn a living.

this reminds me of a former poster, but i can't remember who. maybe laphroaig? anyways.

my family story is a fucking car wreck. i was raised in a nuclear family, but i had half-siblings who were the result of...previous encounters with my mother. one had a dad who was murdered in a field during a bad drug deal; that's my brother. he's still alive.

my sister was raised by an asshole until my mother took them away from him and moved them away. that shit took a lot of guts on mom's part. she grew up poor, but went and made a successful life.

nevertheless, my sister had to deal with what i think was probably ptsd, and my brother too. for whatever reason, my brother was able to overcome, but she wasn't. he slipped into coke, and he got out of it. she slipped into meth. that eventually killed her. she got branded as a felon for having just a bit too much, and yeah, i was an uncle at 8 years old because she hung out with disreputable people and made a mistake. meanwhile, mom was a massive success in commercial real estate. she tried her best, and still couldn't fix the shit that happened. my sister died last year, and fuck you, dude for not even trying to understand what people are going through. her two kids are screwed up due to her addiction. she died because of it. and she was the son of a sheriff. my niece and nephew...i don't even know. i hope they are doing well. they don't return my calls. but i have no doubt there are significant mental issues there. my nephew was once put in custody of the state because the police were called when he was naked on the front lawn while my sister languished in a meth coma. bootstraps, right?

you don't fucking get how hard some people have it. i had it easy. i went to decent schools, i went to texas, and i have a decent job. a lot of that is due to hard work, but i got fucking lucky to have the job i've got. ask @staboner to whom i really owe everything. i just made an appeal and got a chance. i've taken advantage. but i also got lucky because my mom figured shit out. she and my dad raised me pretty well, i reckon.

but not everyone has that experience or that opportunity.

we earn our shit, but we also need the opportunity, and that's where the luck comes in.

my sister is dead because of choices she made. but she was also a product of a shitty dad who my mom had to decide to leave. and people are complicated, and sometimes that takes longer than it should.

your simple fucking view of life is why people vote republican or make fun of joe biden.

finish high school. my mom did that. but just that.

she also got pregnant before 25. regardless, she became a glass ceiling buster in the 80s in fucking dallas of all places. but still, there were ghosts.

i don't think she did drugs, but who are we to point fingers? we ruin people's lives for drugs, which is what happened to my sister. never got a real job after her time at gatesville. fuck you, dude. she was an addict, and people like you take glee in the ruination of their lives. "shouldn't have done that" with no fucking context.

A lot to unpack there, but glad you seem to be doing well.  I remember at least the story about your sister, didn’t know she had passed tho.  It’s terrible that drugs exist. I don’t mind absorbing your anger, but I had nothing to do with any of that, and I wouldn’t expect you to be responsible for my families issues.

You don’t have to take my word for it, it’s true. Posting a link to a website called Obamaphone.com seems like a poor choice for getting info. Have you tried Bideneatschildren.com?

Progressives do not want to end hunting or take away weapons for hunting. Weapons of war are more of their rallying point. You know that.

Companies “forced” into EV by innovation and competition. Acceptance of gas guzzling trucks isn’t a political party rally, everyone wants more fuel efficiency.

Rural Texas has large parts that are blue. Rural Texas has a much larger chunk that is Red, and would benefit that side.
