https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exxon-signals-record-quarterly-profit-oil-gas-prices-2022-04-04/?utm_source=reddit.com

HOUSTON, April 4 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) on Monday said its first-quarter results could top a seven-year quarterly record, with operating profits from pumping oil and gas alone of up to $9.3 billion.

A snapshot of the largest U.S. oil company's quarter ended March 31 showed operating profits from oil and gas, its biggest unit, could jump by as much as $2.7 billion over the prior quarter's $6.6 billion.

Exxon does not hedge, or lock in oil sales, and results generally match changes in energy prices. Russia's invasion of Ukraine pushed up oil by 45% last quarter over the final period of 2021, to an average of $114 per barrel, the highest in seven years. read more

The estimates suggest total earnings for the quarter of about $9.8 billion at the mid-point of Exxon's estimates, according to Scotiabank global equity research.

Exxon shares, which have jumped 36% year to date, rose slightly on Monday to $83.16. Official results are expected to be released on April 29, according to a securities filing.

The outlook implies adjusted earnings around $2.29 per share, Scotiabank analyst Paul Cheng said in a note. The total would guarantee Exxon its highest quarterly profit since at least 2014.

The blockbuster oil and gas profits offer a preview of what lies ahead for other firms' oil earnings. Such results could strengthen calls by U.S. and European Union lawmakers for windfall profit taxes on energy companies.

Big bad Exxon.  They've had such an awesome 5 years...

I totally get that you feel motivated to have a rebuttal to crash or the libs in this forum... but how does it change the fact that oil corporations have an impact on gasoline prices? And If your sentiment that it's not all from corporate greed, then I can agree. But at the same time, am I supposed to feel particularly bad that Exxon didn't earn as much money as they could have the past 5 years?

Just putting some things into perspective.  One big quarter doesn't tell a story.  How many people bitching about Exxon's big quarter are typing their anger on their iPhone?   Fucking lunacy

Big oil has the financial wherewithal to actually make a difference when John Q. Public is taking it in the shorts because of gas prices. Smaller companies are struggling to raise the capital to drill, but Exxon has no excuse.  They just don't fucking care.

Of course not. But I think you are one that understands they work for their shareholders, not to ensure fuel prices are in line with Americans expectations.

So overdrill now so they can get stuff to market in 18 months?

Overdrill?  We have a supply problem.  They could take a little heat off, but they won't.  Fuck 'em.

To be fair... they can increase the supply, but the existing infrastructure to process it isn't there. Now is the lack of foresight, greed, or penny pinching to go through regulations and build new plants on Big Oil? Yeah I lean that way.

It certainly is a function of what they're pulling out of the ground and where it comes from, I'll give you that.

A lot of oil and gas producers went bankrupt under Trump, and many of those who didn't can't afford to drill right now.

Most of this country is made up of idiots on both the left and right so these polls don’t mean shit.  I assume you consider yourself an intelligent person so let me ask you what your thoughts are on how Biden has handled the four above items.  Those being crime, immigration, the economy, and inflation.  What has he done wrong with regards to these issues and what should he have done better?  Once you have given your viewpoints then we can all have a real discussion on these issues. I will hang up and listen.

Lets start here.

Immigration policy and execution of Biden’s policy at the border is a dumpster fire.  I am pro-immigration and think immigrants bring innumerable positives to the United States.  The free flow of trafficking victims across Mexico into the US is completely inhumane.

I agree with you on this and the situation at the Border is terrible. What specific Biden admin policies do you think should be changed?

Well, he certainly shouldn’t roll back Title 42. He also needs to figure out why his messaging seems to be encouraging illegal crossings.

Title 42 is interesting. If Title 42 wasn’t in force, it may allow for removal proceedings or criminal prosecution for illegal entry. Instead Title 42 results in being immediately returned to Mexico where the person can try and cross again.

On the messaging front, I certainly don’t want to see a return to the Trump messaging of separating families, etc. However, I acknowledge that there is a middle ground here which could hopefully slow the surge.

Title 42 is a public health law that was invoked near the end of the Trump administration to help curb a possible influx of covid from across the border.  The CDC has determined that the threat is no longer significant, and that it should be rolled back.

Title 42 is not an immigration policy per se.  Using it as such is typical Republican buffoonery.

Attempts at re-entry are certainly higher, but we’re also talking about the deportation of more than 2 million illegals.

There’s a way to ensure that surge gets worse, and that’s by ending Title 42. I’m hoping common sense prevails here and we avoid pouring gasoline on this dumpster fire.

Or…..Congress could do what it has studiously avoided for well over 30 years, and pass some common-sense immigration legislation. You know, Congress. The legislative branch that the GOP has had full control of several times in that period.

Did you read my post?  Title 42 is "immigration law" only in the context of protecting the States from disease.  It is not intended to address general immigration issues.  Using it in that manner is wrong.

I read it, your issue seems to be on the spirit of the law. I’m just more focused on the end result, which has been surprisingly effective. Biden seems intent on making a bad situation worse, it’s very bizarre.

If you're such a fucking "immigration reform" guy, then maybe you should ponder why your guys have never enacted reasonable immigration reform.
