I think he's not Trump and that's all he needed to be, especially once Clyburn decided to back him.

I was a little callous however I do not think he is particularly bright (his grades and educational performance would back me up there).  He's also clearly working with what I'll refer to as old person issues.  I know it's been memed but it's not just a stutter.

and I think all of that is fair. I have seen little to think he actually senile, but I think he somewhat cognitively delayed - which is really to say I think he arrives at the right answer, it just takes a little longer. I don't mind having a Prez that thinks before speaking or acting - it's pretty refreshing, actually. But I also believe he should be a one term president, but I don't see a path for that currently that doesn't hand the White House back to the R's.

Cool cool, now compare him to let's say uh Mayor Pete.

I don't think he can run again.  Things are going to continue to get worse from an economic perspective.  Our inflation issues are driven by supply shortfalls in labor/food/energy and we are going to attempt to whip it by raising interest rates.  While some of those issues can be tangentially traced to Biden.....maybe if you stretch,  he will get the blame.  All of this is about to start too.  Primary season and announcements for 2024 are 12 months away.   I suspect he'll announce in early '23 he won't run again so they party can have an open primary.  Kamala ain't going to be the nominee either because she has higher negatives than anyone outside of Nancy or Mitch.  It's going to be a shitshow.

Mayor Pete was great. McK pedigree, business mind, operational rhythm, I guarantee he is a great people manager who balances being tough but fair demanding high performance behind the scenes, had good ideas, respected the military and didn't shove his lifestyle down anyone's throat.
Name a negative.

He’s gay. This backwards ass country is not going to elect a gay man. There are democrats that have an issue with gay men. It’s unfortunate, but I don’t think there is anyway in the world he would make it out of primary season.

The Republican saying that the Dems should run young, gay Mitt Romney is a tell.

I completely agree with this, but the D bench is a complete mess right now. Taking the hypothetical of "Biden doesn't run in '24" and gaming it out doesn't lead to a lot of good options.

There's a reason Biden had a cakewalk when Clyburn backed him - the rest of the field couldn't justify their candidacy (and I am a huge Warren fan.)

The 2024 conversations are going to be something.

Exactly. The name of the game is voter turnout.  Trump was such a steaming pile of shit in office that he received  12 million more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016, and still got stomped. People weren't that inspired by Biden. The dems won because the prospect of 4 more years of Trump drove massive voter turnout.

If Pete did manage to make it out of the primary season, it would be a disaster. The economy is likely going to be in the shitter which doesn't help the incumbent party, and Pete being gay would undoubtedly further depress dem turnout. On the flip side, the GOP could drive massive turnout just by whipping the religious right into a frenzy.

It's because a decent chunk of us want somebody like this guy to walk through the door and start putting the Republicans in line and making them back off on the batshit stuff.  But he ain't walking through the door, and the Democrats these days aren't willing to run/nominate the kind of person that will Get Shit Done.

There's a healthy chunk of Republicans that think that Obama A) Isn't American and B) Is probably gay.  A gay, black, Muslim, atheist, Communist, Marxist, Socialist, community organizer born in Kenya, raised in Indonesia, planted in Hawaii.

It's still interesting, and occasionally worth pondering why Barrack Hussein Obama was able to beat a bonafide Vietnam war hero and then a successful rich white businessman, both of whom Trump shit all over (which is interesting in and of itself).  Democrats need to figure out how to tap into that again - McCain is easy to explain away as the country being tired of Republicans, Iraq, etc, after George W,  but still.

The anybody-but-Trump train can't be all that strong going into 2024.

This is a good fucking speech.
Great speech. A needed speech. And wish in one hand and shit in the other if you don't think McConnell and the GQP won't be howling before midnight that the Biden administration is trying to enact policies that will turn the US into cold war era Russia.

It was ok. He tossed out the AWB loaded with restrictions then tossed in a counter-offer to the idea with minimum restrictions. I get what he was trying to do but it kinda fell flat. He did draw a line and called out the Republicans on the issue. Definitely needs more of that.

We desperately need a multi party system.

It's been obvious for a while as you insinuate, but unfortunately we both know it'll never happen. The DNC was extraordinarily stupid to stiff arm Bernie twice for a few reasons (the primary one being they angered young liberals/leftists into prolonged apathy). Also, I can't believe anyone thinks Mayor Pete is/was a quality candidate.

You think Pete would be doing worse than Joe Biden right now? Some of you are smoking crack. Joe sucks because he's old man joe. Anyone that grew up with the fucking internet would do better than Joe. I'm convinced his fucking press secretary would be a better president (both of them).

It's actually incredible how inept Joe Biden is.

It’s the first Friday of the month, the day our job overlord single-handedly rains his blessings over the United States, and you dumb mfers are talking about Dems giving up the most powerful aspect of any re-election, incumbency. Then some of you will post later, without a hint of irony, about Dems having poor messaging. I’d post a litany of reasons why you all are chucklefucks but @Bama Chick already did.

390k jobs. Ice Cream party.

I absolutely think Pete would be doing a worse job than Biden had he been the nominee, and do you know why?  BECAUSE DONALD FUCKING TRUMP WOULD STILL BE PRESIDENT.  Biden is/was the only candidate who could/can defeat Trump.

Pete is unelectable in the current political climate because he is gay.  But he is also inexperienced as fuck.

I don’t know what Biden has done that has you describing him as “incredibly inept”.  For me, his primary failures have been: overstimulation of the economy very early in his term, failing to get the Saudis to play ball on oil supply, and not somehow convincing the 2 independent democratic senators to abolish the filibuster and/or pass more of his agenda.  But otherwise I think he’s managed foreign policy very well (Russia is literally losing a kinetic war without a single American casualty).  And his moves to manage the economy have been good; unemployment is low as fuck and will stay that way, and I believe inflation will calm down by the end of the summer (although not due to any credit to Biden other than staying calm).

I have said from the beginning that Biden is too fucking old to be president.  I would be in favor of not allowing anyone over 70 to be eligible.  But Biden has largely answered the call of the moment, mostly by not being Donald Trump.  And I think it would be monumentally stupid not to nominate him again, mostly because the bench is weak as fuck.

Not sure why this gets repeated so often, but there is zero reason to believe Joe Biden was the only candidate who could have beaten Trump.  2020 was mostly about Trump, not who the Democrat nominee was.  And whether you loved or hated him, it was always Trump that drove turnout, not Biden.  Luckily, it turns out there were about 8 million more people who were sick and tired of the Trump show and wanted a return to normalcy than the Q-Anon cultists and "vote Republican at all costs" people.  2020 was not about Joe Biden.  He was just a familiar face with recent ties to the Obama administration.  I think the majority of D candidates could have beaten Trump in 2020.

People are generally dumb and many falsely tie inflation and gas prices to Joe Biden because he shut down the building of one non-operational pipeline that factored zero into the price of oil or wouldn't let oil companies drill on public lands, but at the end of the day it's going to hurt Biden.   Incumbency will likely not be any advantage in 2024. The supply chain crisis isn't going away in the next 6 months, and Republicans will hammer Biden on it. There are going to be plenty of people who just think about how gas was $2.00 when Trump left office and how it's $4.30 now and will pull the lever for Trump again despite what a reckless buffoon they know he is.

before the election i thought so too, but i was wrong.

take away california and the popular vote is a wash. we needed every vote possible in mich, penn, georgia, nevada, arizona, wisconsin. biden did that.

pete is my guy, but he wouldn’t have pulled it off. neither would bernie, beto, kamala, liz, or the easter bunny.

trump came alarmingly close to getting re-elected. it’ll be ugly, but it pretty much has to be biden again, if we want to win.

and because the gop playbook involves cheating, we’re likely fucked either way. it’s fine, the ledge will have its own barrel pick arriving late in ‘24.

"But at least he's not letting Russia win" - LIke anyone but fucking idiot ass Trump would be doing anything different. The whole fucking world is helping, it's not just the US and it's not like Biden pulled something special out and the US is just doing it out of the goodness of our hearts to save Ukraine. Spare me the foreign policy bullshit as the saving grace. The economy is a fucking dumpster fire on top of a house of cards right now and as mentioned upthread the Fed is mostly to blame on that, but parading out Intel's CEO who has done jack fucking shit instead of calling out companies for making too much god damned money during the pandemic isn't a thing. There is a huge problem brewing in the US and it's becoming far too much of a "dog eat dog" culture and the President of the United States can heavily influence that culture by not celebrating failed multi-national conglomerates who have been pathetically mismanaged for over a decade out in a SOTU speech for some "clout" and "fundraising".

He's been shit within his own administration, he's a trash manager who can't delegate shit to anyone and has his people constantly question and babysit him. (Constantly makes "blunders" that aren't blunders and are intentional that are "corrected or clarified" then "uncorrected")

He's been shit at managing his own party and their alignment on fucking anything. (you stated this already)

He's been shit at showing big wins that continue to have momentum. (The fuck is going on with infrastructure bills? Is there a fucking plan yet?)

He's been shit at rallying the moderate liberal/conservative. (Approval rating is lower than fuck)

He's been shit at nearly all policy related to the economy. (No one feels good about the economy, and there's no hope from this guy)

He's been shit at holding anyone accountable in any aspect of the government. (What the fuck is going on with any big gov agency?)

He's been shit at his post Jan 6th messaging (Just let it go, it's time to move on for America - meanwhile a fucking insurrection leading Trump is actively campaigning)

He's fucking old, tired and the world isn't slowing down for him. Do I think Joe Biden 20 years ago would have been great? Probably - I just don't think he has it in him to actually hold people's feet to the fire to get things done, and right now we need a doer in the office not a talker.

I'm sure we can pick apart any president, but this is especially trash.
