He is the American Javier Mascherano, pero más flaco y más oscuro.

He makes the midfield his house and you’re likely going to get run out of there at some point. And he makes sure that his teammates do their jobs as well (in the best of times).

posted everywhere, and i don't get it, because i know that i'm far from the only one who doesn't agree. i'm one of many people who openly wondered if we would even survive the group stage. everyone i know who follows this team has always believed that we could win lose or draw all three of these games. the idea of needing a win to advance on the final day would have sounded terrifying to me before the tourney started, and i'm still terrified now. who here can truly say that they have supreme confidence that we will beat Iran? i'm sick of seeing this take everywhere. we aren't Brazil or France. this is Gregg Berhalter's USMNT. nothing is a given.

I thought that we would lose 4-0 after watching England humiliate the Iranians as much as they have at any time since they overthrew the democratically elected president of Iran back in 1953… (with the U.S.’s help).

I was pleased to be wrong.

The Spanish/French wife of my English former flatmate posted in our text group that

El guiri está sufriendo.”
(“The foreigner is suffering.” He’s a “foreigner” because he is tall, blond, pasty, and English and they live in Madrid.)

My buddy wrote afterwards:

“They could have done.” is so quirky Brit rather than saying:

“They could have.”  Is that “done” really necessary?

But here’s an English guy who felt that we could have defeated them if we had really tried.

I am not wear my reading glasses 🤓 and at first glance, I read that first sentence as:

”We are kicking trans ass.””

I wasn’t entirely sure what brought that on.

Regarding the Iran match:

I hope that the teams channel the first halves of their first matches of The Cup on Tuesday. We need some goals. Right now only Weah has a goal.

Puli needs a goal, even if it is a PK. He needs one. It would have been great to see him score against England in a shutout win. How do you play Mason Mount over him when he returns to Chelsea?

Watching Saudi Arabia play so disciplined and well (and upsetting Argentina), frustrates the hell out of me with Beerholder flinging shit against a wall and seeing what sticks.

That's a good comp. I keep seeing Kante thrown around but TA isn't quite box to box like Kante was in his prime - just not nearly as dangerous in attack. I think he's maybe a better defender, though.

Wherever you see Kante’s name being mentioned, tell them that they are inbred cunts who don’t know shit about football.

That should set the record straight. People like to be publicly called out and corrected so that they don’t make that mistake in the future.

I was watching the match at work yesterday, and while I did not get to see the entirety of it, what I did see looked pretty one-sided as far as which team was outplaying the other. The US deserved to win that one. England looked like a hot mess and their goalie looked like he was going to have a coronary everytime the US took a shot.

let me rewrite it to see if the perspective makes any moar sense.....

"if the US looked spectacular going forward with a dozen shots on goal, hit wood multiple times, and totally dominated wales and england going forward while also looking like a defensive catastrophe, conceding a dozen shots, which england or wales each converted once, thus losing 1-0 and drawing 0-0, and the US still had the opportunity to beat Iran and advance, we'd all take it in a heartbeat"......   substitute "beat wales" or "beat england" and the statement has different context

also, not being brazil and not being france are non-sequiturs.

"the idea of needing a win to advance on the final day would have sounded terrifying to me before the tourney started and i'm still terrified now"....

if you are a fan of the nats you've been terrified for 32 years

how is this different than "the idea of needing a result to advance on the final day..." ????   now here, written this way, not being a massive side (goalposts moved from brazil/france to "massive sides" i.e. prior winners), IS relevant, because every other nation on the planet (not a prior winner) that has qualified for every playing of the mundial format that began in '98 has started each tournament expecting to need a result on matchday 3 to advance

here in '22 on 6 points from matchday 2: france

can still do it: spain, brazil/suisse, portugal

+++

history of advancing with 6 points from matchday 2....  6 iterations, 8 groups per iteration, 4 teams per group = 192 teams in those 6 tournaments

98 (3+2=5): argentina, brazil, france, nigeria, romania

02: (2+1=3) brazil, spain, aggy

06: (4+2=6) argentina, brazil, england, germany, spain, nederland, portugal

10: (2+2=4) argentina, brazil, chile, nederland

14: (2+5=7) argentina, france, belgium, chile, colombia, costa rica, nederland

18: (3+3=6) england, france, uruguay, belgium, croatia, aggy

31 of 192 won their first 2 matches

16%

winning your first 2 matches in the '96-'22 format and thus clinching advancement on matchday 2 and not needing anything on matchday 3 is never expected or set as a goal by the federations, the coaches or the players.  no one "expects" to do it.  the press and fanbases of massive sides wishcast it to happen but know they probably have to get something on matchday 3.

+++

oh, but a draw is easier than a win.  you have to score to win.  you don't have to score to draw.

welp, whoever you are playing matchday 3 is probably going to try to score.

He picked the wrong words there. This is a style of play. Attributing it to culture has opened him up to criticism.

I agree with you @Zepol87, he is LIKELY talking about the soccer culture, but in not saying "soccer culture", he sounds like he's attributing it to the areas/people.

You have to win a game at some point to advance. One team in the last 40 years has advanced on 3 draws. If you had to pick a team to get that win against it would be Iran. So yeah I would take having to beat Iran to advance 100/100 times. Sucks that they let 2 games slip away but if they play like they did against England they are going to stomp Iran.

Also for stupid shit like this. We should absolutely pour it on them. What crying little bitches.

Why should he ask? They can go through other channels. The Swiss represent us there if I recall. And we always have ships near their cost. The Gulf is not that wide.

I am a dumbass.... Was on a call and missed the joke.
