Ranking all 14 NFL playoff teams by Super Bowl viability: Who can win it all?

Mike Jones, USA TODAY  4 hrs ago

After a wild Week 18, the NFL’s playoff field is set.  Now the intensity ramps up even further as the 14 remaining teams continue their pursuit of the Super Bowl, which takes place five weeks from now in Los Angeles.

It’s a new season as all of these teams start over at 0-0. However, all playoff teams are not created equal.  Of the 14 teams left standing, a select few have legitimate chances to win it all. But there are quite a few flawed squads in this field, and many seemingly face long odds.

We’re ranking all 14 playoff teams in terms of Super Bowl viability – from those favorites to the long shots – and breaking down why they may or may not emerge from the pack.

1. Green Bay Packers

Led by the reigning MVP and odds-on favorite to repeat in Aaron Rodgers, the Packers are the most well-rounded unit in the postseason with a prolific, versatile offense and an improved defense full of playmakers. Rodgers also just got his top blindside protector David Bakhtiari back from injury to further bolster the team’s chances of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. After falling short in each of the last two NFC championship games, this feels like their year.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

After a troubling 3-4 start to the season, the Chiefs gradually worked their way back into top form, going 9-1 the rest of the way. Their offense again ranks among the NFL's most prolific. Their defense ranks tied for fifth in takeaways with 29. And they boast ample postseason experience, having appeared in the last two Super Bowls.

3. Buffalo Bills

Back-to-back winners of the AFC East for the first time in 30 years, Buffalo checks a lot of boxes: talented young QB, top-10 offense, top-ranked defense, gradual improvement each year. It all rides on Josh Allen. Unlike Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, however, he remains unproven under the brightest lights.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady. Enough said. They’re thin at receiver, but the GOAT gives them a chance., and they’re getting some reinforcements back on both sides of the ball. Experience also should serve them well. Health and depth questions will hang over them throughout the postseason.

5. Los Angeles Rams

A star-studded cast of playmakers. Top-10 rankings on offense and defense. One of the best coaching staffs in football. There’s a lot to like about this Rams team that has gone all-in, repeatedly shipping off first-round picks to acquire the best veteran talent. Matthew Stafford is the biggest question mark. He was supposed to be the championship difference-maker. But he tends to force things at times, and his turnovers often keep foes alive. The veteran passer closed out the season with three consecutive multiple-interception games.

6. Dallas Cowboys

They boast the most prolific offense on the season both in yards (407 per game) and points (31.2 per game). And their defense has big-play potential. If all goes their way, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t contend. But, inconsistencies at times plague them on both offense and defense, which could prove costly against veteran squads.

7. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers are a peculiar team. They certainly have the roster to contend with most any team in the postseason, and they were preseason picks to challenge for a Super Bowl. However, waves of injuries hampered their efforts, and they had to fight tooth and nail to the finish. They secured a postseason spot by pulling off an authoritative comeback victory over the Rams. The Niners do have a tough defense and rushing attack, and Jimmy Garoppolo can make some big-time throws. If they get some momentum, experience from their Super Bowl run two seasons ago could prove valuable, making San Francisco could be a tough out.

8. Tennessee Titans

They own the No. 1 seed in the AFC, so the road to the Super Bowl goes through Nashville. They’re a physical bunch on offense and defense, and even without Derrick Henry, they’ve maintained their run-first identity. The 2020 rushing leader could be making a comeback after missing much of the season with foot surgery. However, Ryan Tannehill remains inconsistent when asked to assume a heavier throwing load. And, truthfully, this team just isn’t convincing as a Super Bowl contender.

9. Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals at 11-6 are in the postseason for the first time since 2015. But having closed out the season with a 4-6 record, momentum isn't exactly on their side. Kyler Murray has game-changing abilities. But their success hinges on whether Kliff Kingsburry can make the necessary in-game adjustments.

10. New England Patriots

They own one of the stingiest defenses in the league, as well as a punishing rushing attack – both key ingredients for playoff football. They could find themselves able to compete in games against a lot of teams. But if they have to play from behind, their chances aren’t great, as rookie Mac Jones isn’t at the point where he can put a team on his back just yet.

11. Cincinnati Bengals

They’ve got one of the best ascending duos in Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, an effective rushing attack led by Joe Mixon and can go toe-to-toe with just about any offense in the league. But the Bengals are very pedestrian on defense in yards (350.8 per game) and points (22.1 per game) allowed and takeaways (21).

12. Las Vegas Raiders

The picture of resilience, the Raiders have endured all kinds of drama – the split with Jon Gruden, the loss of Henry Ruggs III following his fatal alleged drunken driving incident, the dismissal of several under-performing high draft picks – and on Sunday punched their ticket with a dramatic overtime win over the Los Angeles Chargers. During the tumultuous early stretch of the season, the leadership of quarterback Derek Carr kept this unit afloat. And then Rich Bisaccia grew into his role as interim head coach and has pushed the right buttons during a 5-2 finish to the season that has now put the Raiders into the playoffs for the first time since 2016. However, taking it a step further and getting their first postseason win since 2002 could prove too daunting a task.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers

In what has been Ben Roethlisberger's farewell tour, the Steelers scratched and clawed their way into the playoffs while receiving the help they needed from the Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. T.J. Watt leads a tough defense, but the Steelers have an anemic offense with a virtually nonexistent downfield passing attack, which doesn’t bode well for their chances of putting together a playoff run.

14. Philadelphia Eagles

After a shaky start, the rebuilding Eagles and first-year head coach Nick Sirianni found their identity and put together a league-leading rushing attack to eke out a Wild Card berth. However, the Eagles aren't ready for prime time. They were 1-7 against winning teams, and eight of their nine wins came against teams with shaky quarterback situations

Ranking the NFL's 14 playoff teams: Packers, Buccaneers top the contenders in 2022 postseason

Quote

Here's how we'd judge the 14 finalists according to championship prospects:

14. Steelers

Record: 9-7-1
Wild-card opponent: Chiefs

This is right where they wanna be: overlooked. And they deserve credit for fighting -- and winning -- ugly. T.J. Watt and the defense will keep them swinging. But Ben Roethlisberger, for all his grit, just isn't captaining a steady, let alone explosive, offense.

13. Raiders

Record: 10-7
Wild-card opponent: Bengals

Give it to Derek Carr and Rich Bisaccia and the whole gang for never quitting. Their ugly but steady resiliency is reminiscent of the Steelers, except they can move the ball. The problem is, can they hold up on defense? And win another shootout or two?

12. Eagles

Record: 9-8
Wild-card opponent: Buccaneers

Who knows how Jalen Hurts will fare if asked to step up as a passer against an elite team? But he's shown real improvement down the stretch, and Nick Sirianni has deployed him wisely as the cog of their ground game. If the "D" can make plays, they'll be feisty.

11. Cardinals

Record: 11-6
Wild-card opponent: Rams

Their talent -- and the way they started 2021 -- suggests they belong a lot higher. But Kyler Murray has had some clunkers, and Kliff Kingsbury's track record is chock-full of late-year crumbles. They're 1-4 with an erratic approach over their last five.

10. 49ers

Record: 10-7
Wild-card opponent: Cowboys

They have a ceiling with Jimmy Garoppolo, but the veteran QB showed up in Week 18. More importantly, Kyle Shanahan has been here before, and if his ground game is clicking, they can control the ball en route to some surprise wins.

9. Patriots

Record: 10-7
Wild-card opponent: Bills

Bill Belichick will surely find a way to put Mac Jones in a position to win, especially if the Patriots' defense shows up, but the reality is they're not really built to survive more than one big mistake from the rookie QB at this juncture.

8. Cowboys

Record: 12-5
Wild-card opponent: 49ers

When they're on, they're about as balanced and explosive as anyone. But they've beaten up on 1.) Washington and 2.) Eagles backups lately. Dak Prescott and their O-line need to be in tip-top form if they wanna make real noise.

7. Rams

Record: 12-5
Wild-card opponent: Cardinals

Matthew Stafford has picked the worst times to make bad decisions for a while now, but Sean McVay still boasts a talented roster on both sides of the ball. They don't feel like a remotely safe bet to go the distance, but they can make plays.

6. Bengals

Record: 10-7
Wild-c Card opponent: Raiders

Neither Joe Burrow nor Zac Taylor has playoff experience, and who knows if the latter can be trusted here? But in one sense, the pressure is off, then! More importantly, Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase and Co. are way too explosive to count out.

5. Titans

Record: 12-5
Wild-card opponent: Bye

They just don't die, as Mike Vrabel would say. Ryan Tannehill will need to step up with a career moment for them to go the distance, but Derrick Henry is returning, A.J. Brown is back, and their defense will be better after Week 18.

4. Bills

Record: 11-6
Wild-card opponent: Patriots

It's all about getting hot at the right time, and they enter having won four straight. Better yet, they've actually found a ground game to complement Josh Allen, who will be determined to build off his 2020 playoff run.

3. Chiefs

Record: 12-5
Wild-card opponent: Steelers

It was an uneven season for the defending AFC champs, and downright ugly at times. Yet they still outscored everyone except for the Bills in the conference. Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes will score at will when they need to.

2. Buccaneers

Record: 13-4
Wild-card opponent: Eagles

The only reason they're not up top is because of the depth concerns out wide and in the secondary. Their defense has occasionally proven vulnerable. But let's just face reality: Tom Brady's presence alone ensures they will be serious contenders to repeat.

1. Packers

Record: 13-4
Wild-card opponent: Bye

It's simple: They have the MVP under center. OK, so it's more than that; even if Aaron Rodgers doesn't officially claim his second straight award, he's the smoothest, most confident QB in the game right now, and while he and Matt LaFleur have yet to advance past the NFC title game, their track record is better than anyone's during their time together.

I can’t be the only one that thinks Pittsburgh upsets KC. Veteran QB making his last run, good defense, you have to really like their chances.

I have been a Steelers fane my entire life. A season ticket holder for 30 years. I do not see this Steelers team doing much of anything against KC. I'd love to be wrong but, I don't see anything good happening.

I haven’t watched near as much football as I did a decade or so ago, but man they really do seem to attempt to do things at times just to get a reaction from the fanbase. The NFL is run by some oddballs for sure.

More power to you. No way in hell could I sit outside in that weather and watch a football game for 3 hours. Just curious, what will you be wearing to keep warm? Living in Texas, I'm not sure I even have the right stuff for that weather.

Good luck. The coldest game I ever attended was about 14F at kickoff. It was brutal.

I don’t think a Monday prime time game in lieu of a Saturday game at noon is going to annoy a lot of fans.

I brought two pairs of thick wool socks that I used when I was hiking in Vermont last winter in weather close to this except with feet of snow to deal with then.

I still expect to be overwhelmed by the cold because I don’t drink so liquor won’t keep me warm and even though I have three layers on I can’t put a glove on my left hand because I tore ligaments in one of my fingers and it is bent down. I am going to wrap it in one of the scarves I brought to keep warm. Again I’ll freeze while some guy next to me is running around shirtless looking like Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

the bungles are on an 8-game losing streak going back 31 years

That 2015 game vs Pitt was a wild ending.

2005 was the Palmer injury wasn't it?   Thought that Bengals core was ripe to be slightly similar to Dallas' Triplets +Harper.
