Texas Speed Traps

Texas has had a speed trap law on the books since 1975.  It applies to towns with a population under 5,000.  If traffic fines make up over 30% of the towns general revenue then any amount over 30% has to be remitted to the state.

That sound like some socialist bullshit to me.  Surprised that hasn’t been repealed yet.

It's been several years ago, but there was this podunk little town in NE Oklahoma that sat on a highway/turnpike interchange (I think the turnpike ended there).  It had an Indian smoke shop, a really fucking big truck stop, and some 18-wheeler service businesses (probably owned by the truck stop) and I don't think the town had anything else.  There was an overpass and the cops/town setup the speed limit signs to bust you coming off of the overpass.

They were making well over 50% of their town's revenue from that one stop, and it was such a pain in the ass and the signs were setup to fuck you over (you had to brake hard as soon as you saw the signs), that eventually the state legislature did something about it.

I don't know what the legislation was, but it was something about you couldn't fund your town off of fucking speeding tickets or whatever.  it was fairly scandalous.

And if they were doing seizures, it wouldn't surprise me, because there had to be a lot of meth moving through that area (Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas were't that far away).

Might be near Henrietta, but not actually the town itself--there's a bitty place near there where you can fly down this hill and there's a stoplight near the bottom. Bigger trap was Atoka and some local must've got wrong side of the law and took revenge by spray painting "SPEED TRAP AHEAD" on some plywood and putting on the barb wire fence near the road.

Reisel was where we had the harrowing encounter of the little old lady pulling out of the gas station and heading northbound in the southbound straight toward us.

Except that now a lot of them are 75, 50, 40, 30.   Can't coast into that 50 zone by just letting off the gas.

Hearne and Calvert are both pretty bad.  Going from Mingus to PK is always an adventure.  Lorena can be a bitch on I-35.

I always laugh at Ellinger (where Hruska's is) on 71.  Goes from 75 to 65 to 55.  Funny thing is, I rarely EVER see any cops there.

Missed this earlier, that actually explains why I had more Giddings problems a long time ago (only got one ticket when a tree was hiding the first 50mph sign). My only ticket there was in around 2007.

Once the 2020 census is officially released I imagine it will get bad again.

50+ posts and no mention of Kendleton? That little shithole just south of Rosenberg on 59 has actually had officials convicted of running a racket. Hell Googling 'kendleton speed trap" brings up articles from the 80s

If only there was something y'all could do to prevent this shit and these mean ol cops from stopping y'all. Hmmmm

Mount Enterprise sucks balls too

Mount Enterprise was my answer. That shit town is nothing but a speed trap and church run by creepy old men who hand out candy and molest boys.

Special shoutout too to Gladewater. Those fucks change the 271 speed limit from 70 to 45. They put the sign behind a tree you can’t see in full summer at night and sit at that line picking off cars. We got caught and the prick pulled over 3 cars at once. The cop was so dumb though. We were in a rental and have licenses from the state we live in now -  he wrote a ticket to the National Car Rental headquarters address and didn’t write down the vin or plate. That $190 ticket for going 35 over is 9 years later is still MIA.

I got a ticket between Rosebud and Lott in 1990 - I don't think I've ever been back through there.  Got a ticket in Burton in 1987 and I cuss that place anytime I'm going to or from Houston.

Burton had a thing going.  They had three cops, and if what I was told is correct, each cop owned his patrol car.  There were some kind of shenanigans that pissed of all of Burton PD, so they all quit and took their cars with them.  So Burton had no PD and no police cars.  I wouldn't be surprised if that was still the case.

Remember when 60 minutes ran a story about the Selma-Schertz speed trap on 35. I think the feds basically shut it down by saying that local municipalities couldn’t write tickets on interstate highway. Texas Monthly has a story on it too called “The Perfect Speed Trap” if you want to read more about it.

Karma that their city hall/court/jail was renovated into a Hooters.

Also fuck the Jersey Village cops that patrol Jones Road from the church parking lot. I see you bitch.

They're allowed to set up a speed trap while being on private property? Seems like there ought to be a law against that.

Couple of years ago we got pulled over on the I35 access road near Troy. Buddy was driving and was going like 45, so we're wondering wtf is this all about.

Cop walks up and declares that the reason he pulled us over is for excessive speed. My buddy asks "What's the speed limit?" and the cop pauses and goes "Y'know....I don't know, actually!"

We both start laughing. He takes the license back to the car and comes back with a warning to watch our speed. And then tells us that after we leave he's gonna go back to the speed limit sign and confirm what the speed limit is. Ok, officer, you do that. Best of luck to you. Bye.

Traffic cops are so worthless

Some of y’all don’t even know… speed limit was 55MPH everywhere when I started driving Houston to Austin on the reg in 1987. Every single Houston Longhorn I know got at least one ticket on 71 between Ellinger and Smithville. That stretch was manned nearly 24/7. Nothing but a cash cow. Fucking pigs.

‘And anyone who drove 290 instead of 10/71 is not a Houston Longhorn. 🙂

Grandview, north of Hillsboro on 35W. It was my last ticket. The speed limit is reduced for no reason in that span of 35 other than revenue for the town. I typically stay in the right lane with cruise control right at speed limit. I am never in a hurry and speeding isn’t worth it. This place pissed me off because I didn’t see their unneeded speed reduction.

Otherwise I am all for speeding tickets for fuckers that want to speed.

Diboll is the worst, I'll also add Tatum and New Summerfield in East Texas

I've sped many a time through Tatum passing the cops. Never had a problem. I had one flash his lights briefly at me as I was passing the elementary school going like 10 over, but he didn't pull me over. I got a warning once, but I think it was for something like my registration being out.

Mount Enterprise seems to be mainly state troopers, but they seem to care more about drugs and drunks than a little speeding. Got pulled over by one between Mount Enterprise and Nac going 95 when I was 18. Got a warning.

When I was in school that stretch of 71 between Columbus and Smithville was only one lane each way.  Sunday evenings going from Houston back to Austin there would always be a lot of traffic and at least a couple of DPS speed traps.  I started taking I10 to Flatonia and then cutting over to Smithville on 95.  You could drive as fast as you wanted to on 95 and avoid that stretch of 71.

so was/is Jones Creek in Brazoria Co.

Got pulled over there many times for 1-2 over in high school. I still drive it about 2-3 under to this day, anywhere between 2611 and the Brazos.

No mention of Decatur? They were world famous. Since the ticket cap kicked in they got smart and started doing stops for drug searches, seizure and forfeiture. Much more profitable and they don't have to kick back to the state.

Glasscock County. I received a speeding ticket returning home from visiting my FIL on Father's Day. The sheriff knew my wife and my FIL and still gave me a ticket.

I took defensive driving, but it was still north of $200 in fees. What a redneck POS.

County name checks out.

We moved from Corpus Christi to Houston in the mid-90s and still made frequent trips back to CC.  My dad bitched about Refugio and Odem, but Kendleton was the worst.  Made a lot more sense when this story came out several years later.

Big Cabin at 44 and 69.  James McMurtry out front should have told you.

A bit further south is the Shawnee bypass where Roscoe tried to miss him but he didn't quite.
