Pics I saw the building looked pretty destroyed.

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A fire broke out late Monday night at Texas French Bread Bakery. The Austin Fire Department responded to the fire at 2900 Rio Grande Street just before 11 p.m.

Workers called in firefighters and reported smoke filling the building. By the time crews arrived, firefighters saw flames shooting through the roof. All those workers escaped the building unharmed.

Damn.  I've close to their old location on Red River when I was in law school, and I used to go to the current location for brunch or the occasional after-work beer with a friend.  Hope they have good insurance and can rebuild.

I ran in similar circles with Ben Willcott 15-20 years ago.  He always seemed like a good guy.  I ate at the restaurant a few times and always enjoyed it.   Well made, simple fare.

I lived about a block from the South Congress location for years and years and grabbed end-of-day bread for a dinner side way too many times to count.  It always felt weird.  It was either free or super cheap.  Sometimes homeless folks would line up and that was good to see them getting a bit of food, surely free to them.  Good family.
