You’d have to abuse roids for a long time for it to have that quick of an effect. But each person is different

Gotcha. Just a know-nothing speculation as that's a young age to go without a known illness or condition. Reports say he was at his parent's home when he passed which could mean illness/expected.

Who doesn’t want to do drugs when they’re at their parents?

Short of it is I know more about this topic than you do.

Long story is a whole bunch of words to essentially say what Bert said, plus the fact that a 47 year old living at home suggests money and/or substance abuse issues which typically go hand in hand. Grown adults that don’t have money or chemical dependence issues don’t typically live at their parents home.

To the same person?

Even legends only die once. But why hasn't it happened to the older Giambi brother,  who probably went harder in all aspects,  for a longer time?

Quote

During your first stint with the A’s, you were noted for wearing a T-shirt in the clubhouse that read, “Party Like a Rock Star, Hammer Like a Porn Star, Rake Like an All-Star.” At 38, can you still pull off that shirt?

It’s gonna have to say dot-dot-dot in between. I need a couple days after each one of them. If I go out and party like a rock star, I don’t make it back to the game quite the same the next day.

That was a quote from 2009

I’m not sure this warranted its’ own thread. Maybe next time a player whose only claim to fame is being the wildly less talented brother of an MLB superstar dies, just add it to the off-season thread. I’m looking at you Wilton Guerrero

Steroids killing people is about as real as reefer madness. It’s 2022 not 1997, there is no excuse for believing that propaganda. Snuff has killed more baseball players than juice ever will.

The guy made it to the Show. He got a taste of life none of us will ever know. I’m not sure I’d have started a thread on him, but now that it’s here, RIP.

As the thread starter I agree, but in the moment and a little bit of shock to see. Reports now suggesting suicide at his parents house, and can only assume substance abuse at this point. But damn that one play, and to have that as your legacy for everything you have done has to be tough (I would put it in the top 3-5 of the entire 2000's). Especially as the younger less talented brother to a former MVP.

47.

He was an admitted steroid user so one has to speculate at this point if that was a factor.

I'm sorry but as others have pointed out, this is a stupid take. Almost every professional athlete the last 60 years has taken some kind of performance enhancing drug. It's weird singling out this person when Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to using and probably abusing steroids and is alive and healthy at 74. There are plenty of people who have lived healthy lives after steroid use. To blame it on that without any information is stupid.

I mean, he said steroid use could have been a “factor.” That’s not really a crazy thought, given the links between anabolic steroid abuse and adverse effects on the liver, cardiovascular system, etc. Sure, it’s unlikely that what killed him was entirely and directly linked to steroid use, but suggesting that a behavior known to increase the risk of certain health issues could have been a factor in a (relatively) young man’s death isn’t “stupid.”

I guess I'm properly corrected now seeing as how steroid use has no long-term psychological effect on a chronic user.

In all seriousness, my initial thoughts were some type of organ issue due to the drug use, or suicide. Choosing to save the brain would point to some type of known mental/cognitive issues. But this is the internet, so I best not speculate.

He was on the 1995 Cal State Fullerton team that won it all coached by Augie.  I now have two thoughts about that team.  One Mark Kotsay is too damn young to be 46  and the skipper of the A's, and that Jeremy is far too young to be dead.    USC came out of the loser bracket to finish second that year.

The only thing worse than getting old is not getting old anymore.

Always sad when someone takes their own life.

A lot of steroid-death connection goes back to that one Texas teenager that took his life. Without a doubt, a tragedy for that family, but they decided to blame the teen’s steroid use. The stories usually gloss over the fact that the teen has been seeing psychiatrists for mental health concerns.

Many young Texas athletes have been required to hear that family’s foundation claim that steroids lead to suicide.

Im of the belief that any substance probably impacts body chemistry which likely alters the brain. Long term use even more so. But no suicide link has been confirmed. It’s just as likely to argue that some types of mental health issues might lead someone to steroid abuse and it was the underlying mental health issue that also contributed to a suicide.

I’ve never touched steroids so I’m completely unbiased.

Truly fascinating to watch you display just how sheltered and ignorant of a lifestyle you lead. Also highly entertaining. So please, tell us more.

You're so on the wrong side of your projection of who I am that it is laughable. I can guarantee you I experienced more of life before you even squeezed out of your daddy's dick. But please, continue to display your profound knowledge of all things you know nothing about. Also highly entertaining.

It probably would have been sufficient to point out that perhaps steroids aren't as harmful as people tend to think.

Roid rage perhaps? 😎

I mean I guess we could accuse your inability to comprehend that roid rage isn’t a real thing on the fact that you’re an alcoholic and your brain is in a constant state of fog due to the murder of a massive amount of brain cells over an extended period of time, but that would be about as fair as accusing me of having roid rage simply for not tolerating someone displaying a repeated ignorance as it relates to the topic at hand.
