That guy has a strangely formed head and the haircut isn’t helping.

Disagree. The haircut rocks. It's Gowdy's one attempt, and a brilliantly successful attempt, to defy the norms that have strangled him like an anaconda squeezing life out of a crippled fawn.

Every year a million kids come back from college with blue hair and a nose ring. There is only one Gowdy haircut.

don’t love this. as we’ve said before, they’re “not hurting the people they’re supposed to be hurting.”

It's basically a "trickle up political pressure" theory. Which historically works about as well as its cousin trickle down economics in practice.

Unfortunately, the innocent are always affected by war. But those affected can make a change. Protests are growing all around Russia, and if they get big enough, it will make a difference.

I disagree. See: Revolution, French.

I always want to give props to WCK.  This is the best charity with real time results in existence, in my opinion.

WCK activates to support Ukrainian families in need

Responding to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the World Central Kitchen Relief Team is now on the ground in Poland and Romania beginning to serve hot, nourishing meals to the tens of thousands of refugees that are streaming across the Ukraine border each day. We are also working with restaurants inside Ukraine to serve residents remaining in the country.

The UN estimates over 368,000 Ukrainians have fled since the attack began, with that number expected to rise dramatically. The journey into Poland is daunting, with many Ukrainian families traveling for days without food.

We have teams setup at multiple border crossings into Poland, including Medyk, the main pedestrian crossing. It is very cold, and families arrive at all hours of the night, so we’re working to ensure they have a hot plate of food as they seek safety.

After crossing into Poland, buses transport many refugees to nearby accommodation centers. Last night, we set up at one of these centers in Korczowa with our food truck partner Oh My Ramen. Sasha and Vitalik from Oh My Ramen are both Ukrainians living in Poland, and they drove 4 hours to join the WCK team and will continue to serve in the days ahead.

Shatabdi traveled with her cat Crimsee into Poland, walking for 60 kilometers before waiting in a 12-hour line to cross the border, all with no food or water. She found a wheelchair to sit in and ate her first meal from WCK since taking the journey.

In addition to our work in Poland, we are supporting local restaurants preparing meals in Odessa and Lviv, two cities in Ukraine. WCK teams are also on the ground in Romania and arriving soon to Moldova, Slovakia, and Hungary.

This situation is evolving fast, and WCK is scaling up quickly to best support Ukrainian families under attack. Through this incredibly challenging time, we’ll help in the best way we know how, with a freshly prepared plate of food.

Damn, Putin just looks like such as asshole in that picture. Which, of course, he is. You would think he might want to think about more about optics. You know, with most of the world looking at him with such disdain right now. Like he just walked through the room and crop dusted the whole party.

Like Putin cares. He bombed a hospital in Syria where they were treating children after a chemical attack. (And Trump didn’t do shit.)

He might not care.  But those russian captives most assuredly will.

As to the apple pay and google pay thing in the moscow subways, that's all on putin.  Make the subway free if your people don't have a method to pay.   That could be fixed with the push of a button.

Dont push the wrong one, though!

The Snake Island border guards had received widespread admiration for their bravery
The Ukrainian sailors who told a Russian warship to "go f**k yourself" are alive, the navy has confirmed.

Initial reports suggested the 13 border guards had died after refusing to surrender Snake Island when they were confronted by Russian air and sea forces on Thursday February 24.

This prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to say he would be awarding all of the sailors the Hero of Ukraine award.

However, it has now been confirmed by the Ukrainian navy, that the border guards are still alive and were in fact taken prisoner by Russia.

In a post on Facebook confirming the news, the Ukrainian navy said it was "very happy to learn that our brothers are alive and well with them". The post went on to praise the sailors for "bravely" in twice rebuking "attacks of the Russian invaders."

It did strike me as a bit odd that 13 guys, even on a small island, were taken out by a smallish naval vessel.  It could use a big missile, or a broadside from big guns to maybe obliterate everything on the island, but it would seem wasteful, if it even had the arms.  Otherwise it would seem to be whack-a-mole with relatively small arms.

Well as an educator I can tell you that we don't compare apples to apples. In most European countries, by 8th grade the non college students are placed in vocational schools and not counted in the comparison.  Where as everyone in the US is counted toward these numbers.  I am not saying that we don't have problems in our education system but those world comparison numbers will always be skewed by this.

Yeah, I remember a few years ago someone was making the case of how bad the US educational system, and had included some chart that showed us behind Portugal.  At the time Portugal had something like a 90% literacy rate.  If you have 1 out of 10 people who can't read, your education system is shit.  But a relatively high percentage drops out of school along the way, so the comparing graduating student standardize tests, it seems like their education system is pretty good.

(They've made a huge effort on literacy, and it is more in-line with the industrial world now.)
