Just watched the video.  Jesus God.  Shame and cringe don't even begin to describe it.  Has an American president, or any other foreign leader in history, openly lambasted another foreign leader in public like that?  And Vance, the little mutt, piling on for favor from the master.  I just....

Zelenskyy finally lost his cool. Trump and Vance are nasty cunts, just horrific people, but Zelenskyy’s job, for his people, was to smile and take it. It’s completely understandable, he’s a human, but pissing off petty Trump feels like an unforced error.

This is utterly disgusting. It's taken exactly one whole month to isolate ourselves from our allies, including the two that border us, and align ourselves with the likes of Xi, Putin, and Jong IL. I've never been more ashamed and fucking pissed off to be an American and everyone who voted for this fucking shit heap of subhuman filth deserve to be publicly shouted down and shamed. I am at my wits end with this shit, every day is more embarrassing and humiliating on the world stage than the last.

Quoted because I can’t find better words to say myself at the moment.

As the lone other Pynchon fan, I got that reference.

Back in the 90’s my brother in law was talking to some girl at a humanities grad school type party in Hyde Park. Some kind of pony-tailed, New-Sincerity-scene-adjacent American Studies TA kept trying to work his way in and compete for the lady’s attention, but his efforts found no purchase.

Making a tactical retreat, he found his way to the bookshelf nearby and began perusing the titles, then grabbed one very thick volume and announced in her general direction, “Gravity’s Rainbow? This is my FAVORITE book.”

Suffice it to say he went home alone after he put on a live tape of The Reivers from his car and somebody stopped it and started playing Cypress Hill instead.

This is probably some of the least important, or maybe consequential, commentary I've read today about the meeting. That said, I still enjoyed reading it and getting this guy's thoughts. Most around here are likely familiar with him, but he's always got an interesting perspective.

Thread of about 15 short skeets or whatever the fuck we call them.

Zelenskyy looks like such a slob compared to our Secretary of Defense emerging from an official government aircraft with the seal of his office on the door.

As for the berating? It was vaudeville for the angry, insecure, white, male idiots who think Trump is just the right tough guy to make them feel tough. Mission Accomplished.

Chamberlain, although hopelessly naive, was well-intentioned in his hopes of avoiding war (as was Daladier). This is not that. This is Hitler berating Hácha into giving up the rest of Czechoslovakia.

Exactly right.  if Britain and Germany had gone to war at that time, Britain would most surely have lost the Battle of Britain.  They needed a huge amount of luck to win it as it was.   Most people don’t realize that building a Spitfire was a very long process at the beginning of the war and their aircraft assembly production lines were a few years away from being able to produce the numbers  they needed.   It was far more difficult for Britain to create that unique wing than pumping out simpler and cheaper older design Hurricanes (or Germany its Messerschmitt bf190s.)

While Chamberlain wanted to avoid war, there was also a pragmatic reason for wanting to avoid it if possible at that time.  they still had a lot of bi-planes.   The 11 months from “peace in our time” to the declaration of war with Germany also allowed the chain home radar station to be built as well.

There are at least extenuating reasons for Chamberlain’s thought process. There are absolutely none for Trump’s, other than him being a Russian asset.

Molotov-Ribbentrop was the same. Stalin, the (not very good) military supply micromanager, estimated they needed to get to 1943 before the war started to be able to defeat the Germans.

I know the answer but why isn’t Trump turning their ire toward the ppl who actually approved the Ukraine funding. The 31 gop senators and 100+ gop house reps.

Becasue he needs them for more nefarious domestic tasks.

Zelenskyy's response starts at the 1-minute mark. He sidesteps it but astutely mentions the relationship between his people and ours, but you can see the pain in his eyes.

watched one clip from yesterday, where trump basically says “you’re not being very nice about my good pal putin who stuck by me during some very trying times when people accused us of being good pals.”

then i turned it off like a bad horns game. never underestimate trump’s ability to make everything about his victimhood.

the fact that the country and the world is not more shocked kinda says everything.

Yesterday was awful. Up there as one of the worst days in American history in my lifetime after 9/11. I also refuse to believe this is the final chapter of U.S.-Ukrainian relations for the next four years, so how do we unfuck this short of POTUS having a coronary?

It wouldn't solve anything overnight, but it's the necessary first step.

Plus, there is no cult of JD Vance. I think you'd see some fevers break.

One of my close friends is standing on the corner of 620 and 71 with a Ukraine flag because she doesn't know what else to do.

I know it doesn't make a shit.

And talking to various people including my 18 year reveal how very few people even care to look around

It has to come from the populace. Politicians don't create the message so much as follow it.  If disavowing Ukraine and disrespecting its wartime leader is unpopular among Americans, the politicians will follow.  But there has to be massive upswell to leave no doubt.  Protests, social media posts, civil disobedience, every possible way of showing that the people of the United States are not for this.
