Oh come on. Don’t put that evil on me Ricky Bobby just because you don’t like the comment. I’m not saying Europe should not buy Russian fuel and let their citizens freeze to death. I’m saying what brisket said— it was wildly irresponsible in hindsight. Hindsight to be fair that’s 20/20.

Look kemosabe, much like the lunatic on the corner screaming the end is near, believe whatever you want, while everyone ignores your craziness.

Limited ceasefire deal agreed to in principal.  Sort of.  Emphasis seems to be on a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.  I think this means Ukrainian attacks on Russia's oil infrastructure must have had good effect.  More to gain for Russia with this focus, I'll bet.

Secondly, I saw elsewhere the Russian language release contained additional Ukrainian concessions not mentioned in the US release.  Namely, a halt to foreign aid to and intelligence gathering for Ukraine.

Seems "win-win", for Putin-Russia.  Not so much Ukraine.

I’m sure Ukraine is thrilled to have their future being decided by the country that invaded them, and an ally of the country that invaded them.

So just use those kickass new Neptune missiles on other things.  Plenty of other targets in range.

The White House's statement in full published at 12:59

Today, President Trump and President Putin spoke about the need for peace and a ceasefire in the Ukraine war. Both leaders agreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace. They also stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia. The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people.

This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts. The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East.

The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts. They further discussed the need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application. The two leaders shared the view that Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel.

The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside. This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved.

The part I bolded is hilarious. It's just Trump and Putin on the call, so throwing in that line implies the nonsensical claim that Ukraine started this thing.

Trump got rolled today. Putin refused the ceasefire offer, countered with something else that Putin will not implement, and pitched a bunch of bullshit to pump up Trump’s ego like hockey games.

The goal is to get the United States to pressure Ukraine into something unacceptable and then drive a wedge between the U.S. and Europe.  Russia is doing its own reverse Nixon on us and everyone around Trump is either too stupid or venal to notice or care.

Also, the NSC is understaffed and lacking any actual real-world Russia expertise and none of the people they could hire will pass Trump’s political litmus tests.  Lots of self-inflicted harm here.

Funny, I believe the Russian account is probably more reliable than the Trump administration’s account.

Hey Smart Women-

What is the appeal of a charismatic, handsome world leader who has been globally praised for bravery and leadership while defending his country against a hideous fascist army? It also seems he loves his beautiful wife and young children.  I just don’t know what you see in him.  What does he have that JD Vance and Elon Musk don’t?

Signed,

A Conservative Man Who Isn’t Mad. At All. Lots of Women Like Me. I’m Just Curious Not Jealous.

plus he's a comedian. nothing more attractive than a man who makes you laugh.

Are you my wife?  Because that's what she comes back to, over and over again.

Which is a pretty harsh way of saying "well, you aren't very good looking, so you had to bring SOMETHING to the table."  True, but harsh.

Dead serious.  Average looking, not very athletic, drove a shitty car.

But I had plenty of game.  90% of it was "listen to/give women your attention, and make them laugh."  Shit, if I can do it...ANYONE can.  Oh, also, my wife tells me that being smart and having ambition are helpful too -- if your dream is to be a professional video gamer and you act like it....you're not going to get a lot of points with the ladies.

Except, apparently, the "anyone can do it" is not true.  Lot of really awkward dudes out there.

I didn't develop real game until a bit later.  But I was pretty funny.  I leaned into it.  It eventually morphed into game.  I think my biggest challenge was that I don't suffer fools well, regardless of gender.  But I could be temporarily flexible on that score back in the day given the right set of circumstances.  Alcohol helped.

I dunno.  Can you pound a twelve-inch spike through a board with your penis?

Also, over time, I learned that if I liked a girl, I needed to make my intentions clear pretty early.  I had a lot of women friends back then.  Not complaining about that.  Just an observation.

Still off topic

When funny goes wrong: Back in law school, my wife and I went out for dinner.  She wore this dress that probably was a little past its early/mid 90s prime.  Two solid, diagonal stripes.  She looked great.  So hot (no pics).  But all I could think of was that Seinfeld episode where the girl wears the same dress on every date, so I say to her, "I love that dress.  You look like a super hero."  She was gracious and gave me a chuckle, a smile, or a glare.  Who can remember?  Anyway, years later, she told me she never wore that dress again.  It didn't land as funny at all.  Oops.

More recently, an old picture of her wearing the dress occasionally will pop up on the Amazon FireTV slide show screen saver [hyphens omitted].  I'll give her a look and a smile, and she smiles and shakes here head at my dumb ass.  Still got it.

When I was first dating my ex-wife, when I woke up one morning I found an earring next to my pillow, and,  gentleman that I am, I handed it to her when she woke up.

She then informed me that that was NOT her earring.  I replied, “OMG…. That must’ve been that Mormon girl I had up here. She shook her head “no!” violently and then stormed out of the house….”

She told me…. much much later….that my quick reply tickled her.  But then, there’s that weird thing where women like you more if they think that other women want you.  It’s not you, it’s just her showing the competition that she would win.

Solid story.  A lot to unpack there.

Sorry to have assisted Brisket in derailing this thread.  I haven't thread jacked anything this much since three days ago when I made a high-school science, "keep-your-units-consistent joke," and set off a firestorm of Ford/Chevy/Dodge enthusiasts arguing about metric versus English designations for small block engines and which was called what when.  Again, my sincere apologies.  Slava Ukraini!
