Spam musubi, beef Curry Udon, shrimp squid fish tempura and tried the dashi soup

spam musubi is the perfect grab and go snack. It’s sweet savory and salty with no condiments. HahaA1FC89FF-DDFF-415C-A224-FAC3BED5F773.thumb.jpeg.391050ad7922bad3bafc491f30dba282.jpeg

Damn -- I'm pretty sure that I could eat my weight in that squid tempura!  Party on, brother.

well I thought this was going to get a lot more raunchy than it did so started it here, I'll move it to F&T and change the title to accurately reflect the trip

Welp, lopped a week off of our trip because "weird economy" + "damn, Hawaii is expensive"

So, we'll stay 3 nights in Waikiki without a car and 4 in nights in Punalu'u with a car.

We'll be staying at the red dot.  What's good in the hood?

I would eat as much fresh caught fish as you can. It's the cheapest, but most authentic thing from my memories.

I'm down with that.

I heard the area closer to the zoo is good... maybe read the beach was less crowded.  I also like visiting local zoos. No idea what theirs is like.

Any good cheap food options in that part of Waikiki?

There's nothing "cheap" in Waikiki from what I remember, and the stuff that was, why would you wanna eat it you are in hawaii.

I wouldn't worry about crowds, even when it was crowded there was tons of space. There's so much beach it won't be hard to have a nice time.

Man, I've got four mouths to feed... two of which are a pain in the ass.  Cheap is relative, of course. I hear food trucks are a way to go.

Or maybe somewhere I can get my personal favorite... Hawaiian pizza.  Mmmmmmm mmmmmmm

Not trying to be a dick, but just don't go to Hawaii if you can't afford basic shit like eating decent while you are there.

It was not an indictment on you, more on Waikiki. I think we might have talked about it in another thread. Lots of chains. It's the Mag Mile meets Ft. Lauderdale in some regards. But the beach is better and there are pretty mountains. Food trucks might be a good plan.

Heading to the North Shore tomorrow for 10 days.  Food truck and bar recommendations appreciated.

Expand

I'll be body boarding up there tomorrow. The Turtle Bay poolside bar which is open to the public is amazing. The view is spectacular. Food isn't bad, but you're paying for the view. There's a pretty large food truck park in Kahuku. Lots of good options there. Haleiwa has lots of good options as well. Haleiwa Joes is always great and has a pretty rad view. Lots of food trucks in Haleiwa as well. Seven Brothers burgers, which has locations both in Haleiwa and the Kahuku food truck park is really good. Maya's Tapas in Haleiwa has a really good menu. For eating cheap, I'm a fan of Foodland's prepared food section including solid Poke. There's one on each end of the North Shore. Tamura's liquor store also has a really good poke selection. Enjoy your trip.

@texasdago The ABC chainstores usually have fairly affordable to-go foods like sushi, etc... It's fine. There are all the usual chains that are reasonably affordable as well. I live on the windward side and tell friends that are visiting that there really isn't much great food on Oahu in my opinion. There are plenty of expensive places but not very memorable in terms of food quality. So just getting half decent affordable food while enjoying the beaches makes the most sense to me.

I will say that the beaches on the windward side, in my town of Kailua and the next town over Waimanalo, are far superior to Waikiki. Waikiki is fun for a couple days, but you might consider Ubering over to spend the day on this side for one of your three days. These photos were from yesterday and this morning at Kailua beach.

Ray's is great if you can get a table. They get crowded.

If you want the cheapest really good food in Waikiki it's a no brainer. Steak Shack. Right on the beach, a little hut but similar to a food truck with some tables around it. When I was there last May it was about $13 for a plate. Damn if I don't still crave that steak every once in a while.

If you can afford the rental car then get out of Waikiki. Get to North Shore and eat Jenny's Shrimp Truck. Their spicy shrimp scampi was one of the best things we've eaten.

Also, for some nearly free entertainment take the family to the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens. Some of the best scenery in a forest on the edge of the mountains. We camped there 3 nights and spent days at the beach and nights drinking and cooking out in some of the most beautiful scenery you can find anywhere. Just be prepared for the rain because it rains off and on every single day on that east side of the island.

To me you can do Hawaii 2 ways. Expensive vacation resort or live like locals camping on gorgeous land and eating stuff you make from the supermarket. The wife and I want to go back and do an inexpensive 5 day trip camping only and really get back to nature. We enjoyed that far more than the days we've spent at the resorts.

Got the shrimp pictures mixed up. That one above was Giovanni's. Still very good, but the spicy from Jenny's just hit different. The coconut shrimp at Jenny's was good too.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.  We're currently doing 3 nights in Waikiki and 4 nights in Punalu'u - condo right on the water at Pat's.  I'm thinking of bringing one of my bodyboards and fins to the island so I can hit up Makapuu.  Or I might rent.   Going to try to be smart and not go to Sandy Beach.  My back already hurts.

If you’re staying in a condo- eat breakfast in, take sandwiches for lunch and eat somewhere good for lunch. I personally wouldn’t stay in Waikiki for 3 days without a car. I’d spend a day on Waikiki beach and the other 2 I’d go for hikes and spend all day in Lanikai

I like the Garlic Shrimp at Ted's Bakery. They are good chunky shrimp. I want to say I also like their chicken katsu.

If you have access to base.  Go to the bowling alley at Pearl Harbor.  They have a fried rice omelette.  One of the best things I have ever tasted.  It was 5 bucks 10 years ago.

I haven't been to Hawaii in over 40 years.  But on my last trip, I sang with Don Ho.  Sometimes I wonder how the girl's life turned out. Thanks for the bubbly, Don.

/I had lines and everything (edit: not those kind of lines, but the spoken kind).  They came out into the audience (dinner situation) and asked me if I wanted to be in the show.  They didn't ask my parents, and neither did I.  My mom just had noticed I wasn't at the table and was frantically looking for me when she saw me walking across the stage.

Are you suggesting that the person who proclaimed to be Don Ho and with whom I sang "Tiny Bubbles" that evening in 1983 was an impostor? ;)

Also, in the handshake game, that puts me one handshake away from one Hervé Jean-Pierre Villechaize .
