Creedence Clearwater Revival

I'll limit this to CCR, but it's really a discussion about John Fogerty, who for some odd reason rarely seems to get mentioned in the "greatest songwriter" discussions.  I don't get it.

CCR's first 6 albums went platinum, and were released in a span of 2.5 years.  TWO. POINT. FIVE. YEARS.  The first album had success with a couple of covers -- "I Put A Spell On You", "Susie Q".  After that, John Fogerty went nonlinear.  Over the next 5 albums, the band had hits with his songs such as:

"Born On The Bayou"

"Proud Mary"

"Bad Moon Rising"

"Lodi"

"Down On The Corner"

"Fortunate Son"

"Lookin' Out My Back Door"

"Run Through The Jungle"

"Up Around The Bend"

"Who'll Stop The Rain"

"Long As I Can See The LIght"

I mean, WTF?  That's nuts.  We're talking skill & success nearly on the level of The Beatles, and I'm not even considering other covers ("Heard It Through The Grapevine") or later solo hits ("Centerfield", "The Old Man Down The Road", etc.).

My favorite?  One of their more minor hits, "Lodi".  Such a dusty, laid back feel, it perfectly encompasses the lyric.

"Oh lord . . . stuck in Lodi again."

Tom Petty says "hold my beer".

In a perfect alternative universe, John Fogerty and Tom Petty would have collaborated on an album and it would be nothing but perfect licks, hooks, riffs, and melodies.

Saul Zaentz Is the primary reason. He was a piece of shit. Though he apparently was savvy enough to get Fogerty to sign a terrible contract. Fogerty was young, fresh out of the army. Had he not signed that contract CCR probably doesn’t break up, at least not until they exhausted their streak. And Fogerty would hold a far higher place in R&R lore.
