She’s too old, right?

And outtie Mark certainly would’ve talked to his sister about a lost child, or any child?

Yes, if the timeline Mark has in his head is correct Gemma's only been dead a couple of years, so Huang presumably is not his daughter.

Also regarding the theory of Helena being the one in the office... I thought that too.  Something in the first few minutes of the episode tipped me off - can't remembner right now.  I'll have to go back tonight and rewatch and put it here.

The lie about what she saw outside and Irv's reaction are two big clues.  And then her lack of muscle memory in turning the computer on, as referenced upthread.

The credits show it to be someone we haven’t seen before based on the actor’s name.

Not exactly a spoiler but just in case

Spoiler

The actor’s personal site says that he’s a NY-based actor who will soon be seen “recurring on Season 2 of Severance”. Probably Graner's replacement.

In the real world, her name is Gemma Scout. So I guess on the severed floor, she's not going by her real first or last name. I just assumed Casey was a first name, but I guess it could be a last name.

Helly doesn't go by her real name in the office - her last name is Eagan but her office last name initial is R. So I figured they change names whenever it suits them, and that Casey was made up.

Has anyone considered the possibility that Ms. Huang might be the offspring of Mark S. and Ms. Casey?

Mark never specified how exactly he and Gemma tried to have kids, so there's a plausible scenario where they did IVF and Lumon somehow got ahold of one of their fertilized eggs. But that seems a bit farfetched and I'm not sure what Lumon's end goal would be. I've seen some people theorize that Ms. Huang is a clone of Gemma, which is still weird but more likely than the other scenario. The presence of goats in their facility definitely got me thinking about cloning as something they're working on.

A friend of mine mentioned that having Keanu do the voiceover in the video could be a Matrix reference. They're probably overthinking it, but it's interesting.

Yeah, I would agree with this. The bosses are not severed and are referred to by their last name (Huang, Milchick, Cobel). Ms. Casey is a special case (notice she is referred to by her first name, but no last initial).

I assumed that they were saying Casey was her last name. Like Ms. Cobel, Mr. Milchick, and Ms. Huang. Wasn’t the security guy, Mr. Something? Hence why they’re saying Casey is her last name in the severed world.

Did y'all notice there was no ding when Helly went down the elevator, unlike the others? More evidence for the Helly = Helena theory, I think.

Not sure how long we are spoilering stuff, so just in case.

Spoiler

Yes, but it could mean anything. They could be messing with us with that. I just don't understand why she would want to. She can watch anything that happens down there. To make sure her innie behaves? I found her watching herself kind of moving knowing that Helena likely never gets to experience much joy or true feelings. Does she want to be unsevered so she gets to pretend and also to experience what life is like if she gets to be herself without the constraints always placed on her? Has she been actually unsevered the entire time?

I think you answered your own question. :) It could be partly because she doesn't trust her innie - which is a legitimate concern, seeing as she once tried to kill herself - but also because she wants to experience a life free from the expectations she has to deal with every day. She kept rewinding the part where Helly kissed Mark. I doubt she ever gets to be fun or spontaneous in the real world.

agree with austingirl.

Spoiler

helena kept rewinding the bit where helly kissed mark s because she's never gotten to do that.  helena's so cold and distant from everyone and everything b/c that's how she was raised.  she recorded a message to her innie saying she's not human, but in watching the interaction between her innie and mark s she realized helly's lived more and experienced more than she has, and she wants to experience that. she wants to be kissed.  she wants to have a friend risk his job just so they can be together again.

If Helly wants to be kissed, I would be happy to assist.

I love the crazy dialogue.

"What about benefits?"

"There's a coffee pot right there."

"So I mean like health insurance."

"Oh yeah, for you and your family."

That whole conversation had me rolling.

"What's your favorite door?"

"Pocket."

And Dylan interviewing with someone who looked like him in 20 years.

Man this show is so smart and such a unique piece of entertainment.

Everything from the slow, almost static, pace at times which yet holds tension, to the writing which is occasionally so off the wall, and yet perfectly appropriate for each character.

"Fetid moppet!" got me laughing.

"Eggshell"" That's hot."

It doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot and incorporates nuance and subtlety which are so largely missing from entertainment in general.

Also if you haven't listened to the Severance podcast it's worth it. S2E2 had a small Easter egg from the podcast episode with Dan Erickson, for example. And listening to how certain things were written, directed or acted adds a nice layer.

Finally finished rewatching S1 and now the first 2 episodes of S2. This show is so good.

I suppose the accident that killed Gemma was never really an accident, but all part of Lumon’s sinister plan. I don’t think Gemma could be in a coma because they would need her body to be functional when Ms. Casey wakes up. A comatose person can’t suddenly walk around like everything is normal. Her outie must be in captivity, or else maybe the cloning theory is somehow at play.

I’m most curious about Cold Harbor and why Mark is clearly more important than Dylan and Irv. They were expendable and he was not.

Burt was teary eyed while watching Irv’s outie, which suggests that Burt was never severed. Does that mean Burt was part of the sinister plan or is there a different significance to that?

I’m not going to put this in spoilers because if you’re not caught up and reading this thread, that’s on you.

Like most I think Helena didn’t switch to her innie and is herself acting as Helly on the Severed floor.

The why is likely 2 fold.

1. I think she doesn’t like her innie. Yeah I agree with the jealousy angle. But also she tried to kill her and as the post credits scene said - she kind of doesn’t see the innies as human. When she sent her messages to her any from the surface, she had some distain in her voice. I just don’t think she likes her.

2. If she was revealed as the CEO’s daughter while in the severed floor, she could become a hostage. And her innie very much would reveal she was the CEO’s daughter on the outside. Heck she might not ever wanna come out.

Just starting season 2.  This show is really really good, but it's a fucking horror movie for those of us who work day in and day out....

If Wikipedia is correct, the originally script was for a feature and was named on the thriller/horror version of the Hollywood Black list (the “Blood List”)

I’ve been wondering the same but I like your explanation.  Interesting that both versions appear full of determination, particularly compared to Mark’s passivity.

As far as Irv/Burt, we don’t yet know what happened after innie Irv was banging on Burt’s door. He flipped back to outie Irv, and who knows what their conversation was after that. It’s very possible that they spoke about lumon and it piqued Burt’s interest. I assume that part of the story will play out in the next episode.

Yeah, Irv is the one I'm most curious about now. The paintings of the elevator Ms. Casey went down, the list of severed employees in his house, the pay phone call when he said "My innie got the message", and the fact that he played it really cool when Milchick came to his house.

Don't forget, outtie Irv kept the key to the trunk with the fake bottom in his pant pocket at all times. The map and list with the names of all those Lumon employees was in that trunk. Did he keep that key in his pocket hoping the overtime contingency would happen sometime and his innie would find it? Does he keep painting to sear the hallway into his subconscious mind so that his innie sees it to? We see the black paint bleeding into his innie's consciousness, is that from his mind going haywire from a lack of sleep? Is that why outtie Irv is always blasting music and slinging caffeine?

Great points that I hadn’t thought about. Sleeping is supposed to be one of the greatest sins for an innie so Lumon may be worried that the dream mind can cross between the two worlds.

I assume that Irv is talking to the former employee who helped Petey re-integrate and later killed the security lead while with Mark. It would seem too complicated to introduce another outside group. She probably had ideas on how to get a message to innie irv perhaps she did the same with petey.

My wife works for UT. Today she helped out a coworker from the visual marketing department by partaking in a survey. She had to look at different two-dimensional lines, some were straight, some squiggly, some lightning bolt shaped etc, and sort them into categories of emotions they elicit: fright, comfort, warmth, danger, etc.  my wife asked her coworker if she watched Severance, she doesn't.
