Severance (Apple TV)

I know this is very random but I have a weird ability for recognizing faces. Anyway, I remembered the actress playing Dillon’s wife from the movie Signs, as the girl who worked at the pharmacy and confessed to Mel Gibson for cursing too much.

Plus as I’m sure many others did, Lady Brienne of Tarth working in the goat department

Hmm. Not the greatest episode IMO, but lots of set up it seems for the next few. And the end obviously generated some anticipation.

I was a little shocked Mark opted to reintegrate. Maybe not shocked, but it feels like such a monumental act at this point of the series. Sort of felt rushed in terms of the episode itself too. But cool visual tie-in with the opening credits.

Seems Dylan may start toeing the corporate line so he can keep seeing his outie wife. I thought they would have a fake wife actually.

The mammalian nurturers gave me Children of the Corn vibes.

And not sure what Cobel freaked out about? Helena's driver?

I assumed that if Cobel went with them, she would definitely not be talking to the board and would definitely either be killed or end up owned by them and experimented on like Gemma, never to see the light of day again. She knows too much and is too much of a loose cannon at this point, and Lumon doesn't seem like the type to just calmly acquiesce to her demands. The board just happened to be immediately available to speak to her? Ok. (Also, I think the board is either some AI entity or the digitized consciousness of Eagans who are now dead and gone. Just a side note.)

Jumble of thoughts & questions:

  • Has anyone else noticed that the license plates aren't from any US state but, instead, they have a bust of Kier on them? Do they have their own state?
  • Speaking of transportation: What do y'all think about everyone driving old cars and using old computers? Is it just an aesthetic thing? Helena has a nice looking iPhone, so I guess it's not that.
  • The hills have eyes in the goat room.
  • Cold, blue, and ice are definitely in this season. Cold Harbor connection?
  • How big do y'all think the outie resistance is? And I wonder if that's a clue about Helena's choice to pretend to be Helly.
  • As to the purpose of it all: Is this a reincarnation cult? Is that what they're after -- trying to replicate/induce/whatever reincarnation?

In all the mail they've shown throughout the series, the address is Keir, PE. I think they are in the US, based on the question they ask about it when innies first wake up, but definitely in their own...state? Municipality? Or is the entire thing a simulation?

I do think reincarnation or at least the saving/resurrection of consciousness is the end goal. Helena's dad talked about seeing her at his "revolving". Obviously Gemma is still around in some form. Last season, Cobel's shrine involved her dead mother's hospital bracelet - maybe she wants to bring her back and that's one reason for her devotion to Lumon.

Yeah, agreed on the board and I thought of that later. That she decided "uh, no, this isn't right."

Plus, from season 1, she warned Mark to "get away from them." She definitely knows some shit even beyond what's been revealed thus far.

As for location I've read that Erickson said that Severance is in a "here-ish" place and a vaguely "now-ish" time. It's definitely the US since we've had US legislators discussing laws relating to the procedure.

I almost forgot about the alternate Kier images given to Milchick. That was wild. So brazenly manipulative.

Also "The board would like you to know that I also received these and I enjoyed them."

LOL. The board would. But the silent interchange between her and Milchick was so fraught with meaning. I think she was telling him "Yeah, this is fucked up." ... but who knows!

But that scene reminded me of the podcast interview with Tramell, the Milchick actor, who before starting the show, or early on, asked Stiller and the producers if the Milchick character "knew he was black." That had to have influenced that part of the show.

Beautiful Lincoln Continental though. And it was coordinated with Helly R/Helena’s clothes! I was disappointed we didn’t get to see the inside of it.

What was with the dropping of formal last name protocol between “Seth” and “Natalie? “ It happened at other points in the episode and seemed pretty jarring to me.
