How many innies does Gemma have and why are they all in a constant state of torture?

My guess is they want to market severance as a way to avoid any pain or trauma for the general population.

Fear of flying, fear of the dentist etc. Flip a switch and the processing/procedure is over and you have no memory of the experience.

Mark also mentioned something about how she hated to write thank-you notes, before they showed her in the room where she had to write thank-you notes until she could barely write.

With her left hand! (Outtie is a righty)

Why is the doctor sometimes wearing disguises? It’s not like she would recognize him.

The same reason she's made up to suit the different time periods.  Probably just a stylistic decision the producers made.

That was a very well made episode that was also a huge gut punch.

So, what did Mark see that he took as Gemma’s dead body?

I assumed she actually did die, there was a body, but Lumon got the body later and brought her back to life. Not sure if Lumon caused the car crash or not, but I am leaning towards yes.

I thought it was all one innie Gemma doing all of that. At the beginning of the episode when she asked the nurse how many rooms she had to go into, she sighed when she heard six.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like all the rooms were about making Zombie Gemma "human" again. The Gemma we saw last night was much more responsive and with it than Ms. Casey was last season. She's finally showing emotions, making decisions, problem solving by trying to escape, etc.

Outie Gemma is living below, that's who we saw all episode.   When she goes to the severed floor (where she runs into Milcheck), that is innie Gemma/Mrs Hayes.

Also, when she goes in the various rooms, she is innie Gemma/Mrs Hayes

Right. When she ran into Mr. Milkshake, that was the first time “Ms. Casey” had been activated in awhile. Which was why she was so confused/disoriented.

Now we are digging into what’s really going on.   All those rooms are names that Mark has been data mining.  We still don’t know how exactly Gemma got to the lower floor.   When the cops showed up at marks after Gemma’s “crash”I was expecting one to be Burt   Might still be.

Same on expecting Burt. I was waiting for those faces to come into focus and have an "Oh shit!" reaction.

I got from this episode the larger picture of Lumon controlling the entirety of their medical visits prior to the crash as a prelude to them just taking her.

Maybe even during the blood draw they did something to her/them.

I'm sure it's not, but I can almost anticipate that she "opted in" on a Lumon medical form to additional experimentation.

The "Chikhai Bardo" cards from Lumon being sent to her as another pre-test or something.

The car crash site was faked, I'm sure, and then they just whisked her off.

They told Mark she burned up maybe, because he has her "remains."

Fantastically directed episode. And yes, dark and devastating.

This season's episodes have been so unique and unexpected in the events that are portrayed, and how they are shot and presented, yet the story is moving along consistently. (admittedly, it does leave the audience with many new questions).

Had a thought that maybe Gemma volunteered to be part of some experiment with Mark because Lumen promised her it would result in a child with him, for which she is desperate.  They focused on her miscarriage and a visit to the fertility center in the back story last night; and near the end of the flashbacks, the marriage had seemed to grow a bit cold.  Additionally, I seem to recall that when Mark was having sex with Helly in the tent, her face flashed between Helly and Gemma.  Was he in actuality having sex with Gemma?

Show is a complete mind-fuck, in a good way.

The responsive Gemma was her outie, in the hallway and in her apartment/room that was her outie being held captive. In those named rooms those were different innies. They were only aware of being in a specific room all the time and repeating the same tasks. They were not aware of the existence of the other rooms or other innies.

This was the first episode we were exposed to outie Gemma. Ms. Casey is just another Gemma innie and there are at least 7 Gemma innies.

The Gemma who tried to escape was outie Gemma, which is why she was a lot more with it than Ms. Casey. When she went down the elevator, she reverted to Ms. Casey, and her personality reverted back to the Ms. Casey we know.

Post-sex happy faced Helena seems to indicate that he did actually do it with Helena.

I believe the Gemma flashback was due to Mark's reintegration process.

Makes sense.

Wild theory - I wonder if they are trying to kill Outtie Gemma and replace her with her innie.

*Forgot about the Severance Birth resort earlier. Gemma seems like the expansion pack.

Mark used actual US Dollars to pay for his meal last episode. If the South won they would've continued to use Confederate Dollars.

I dont think anyone is trying to say the "south won,"  but it could have been an event that effected Kier in some way.
