I've been told by my congressman that these are jewish space lasers.  I feel lead astray.

In all seriousness, that's fascinating, I was unaware of this phenomena.  Shame it comes with this level of destruction and human loss, but nonetheless very interesting.

Volcanic lightning is really cool. These shots are from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano back in 2010.

Yep, and we are not hearing Syria numbers yet.

This is what the NYTimes is reporting in their latest update.

About 700 people were also reported dead in northwestern Syria. The affected area stretches across several provinces and the front line between government-controlled areas on one side and areas under the control of the Turkish-backed opposition on another.

Second video shows earthquake lightning. A strange phenomena during earthquakes where lightning is seen even in clear skies.

That's crazy. I assumed they were transformers exploding. The devastation already looks horrible.

Yeah, you can’t tell for sure since there aren’t visible lightning bolts. I assume there would have to be a good sized fissure in the earth opened up for there to be earthquake lightning.

First time I heard about that type of lightning was during the eruption of the unpronounceable volcano in Iceland. It looks like that may be where your photos were taken.

Especially since it hit at night and the amount of buildings just fully collapsed…damn near everyone in those buildings is cinder block ash.    I’d bet 95% death toll in any of those buildings.

could easily see a number in the mid 5 digits.   Horrific.

imagine what a 7.7 hitting LA or SF for 90 seconds would do.   We’re talking black swan market event.

I am interested in hearing about the damages in Syria - I know a guy from my son's Guard unit who is deployed there with a unit that flys drones.  I'm not sure it would help me even if I knew where the damage is severe, as he won't/can't tell us where in the country they are located.

Hearing from a friend on the ground it is really bad in the cities where infrastructure barely exists and building were already damaged. Who knows about the country side.

Another mass exodus will overwhelm the humanitarian ops in N Syria. Turkey won't let anyone over, since they have their own shit to deal with.

Biggest issue with Syria is the Government cares little about the people in the impacted area. Are they going to let in international rescue teams? Not sure. But monitoring.

Here are the countries responding with K-9 units. And yes, I fucked up posting that and already apologized. Helo is correct about people believing what they see online, like the Yankees are the best team in Baseball. BBC link to Mexico's response is below.

Mexico is not the only country sending dogs to help with the rescue efforts in Turkey and Syria.

Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Libya, Poland, Switzerland, the UK and the United States are all also deploying canines with their handlers.

The animals are often used in areas where the use of heavy machinery could cause the rubble to collapse further, putting the lives of survivors at risk.

The dogs are trained to sniff out humans and alert their handlers by barking and scratching the ground where the smell is strongest.

Mexican officials say their mission is "to save lives" and while the dogs can detect the smell of bodies as well as that of those who are buried under the rubble alive, the hope is that their quick deployment will result in rescues rather than recoveries.

All of my BIL’s family is in good shape but out of their residences until some unknown date.  They are all out of Adana and staying with relatives or at summer places.

Today’s report is several close fiends and co-workers are missing.  Some are, at this point, presumed dead as their dwellings are completely destroyed to a mountain of concrete and rebar.  There is no accounting of them on the street or answering phone calls or texts.

What a mess.  God bless them all.

The folks whose place hasn't crumbled can't or won't stay in their homes, most of which are multiple floors, because the structural integrity inspection is currently left up to the residents.   I imagine structural engineers are now primarily involved in S & R / recovery or presumably inspecting government buildings first.

I'm sure the Turk HOA set up is much different that ours here in the States and private or code enforcement  structural engineers are much fewer and far between.

It will be a long haul.

Yep, creates a new concept for internal displaced people. 1986- El Salvador. Earthquake took out the back of my house. Spent about 6 weeks sleeping under a heavy table at a Team house since it was deemed secure. Sucked, but I got to watch some porn (Cinemax) late at night when the SF dudes had it on and did not realize I was still awake.

Best thing that happened in that horrific event was got to meet and help the Dade County rescue team and help care for their dogs. Damn those pups are amazing. Probably the big reason I went and got a SAR cert.

The baby born in the rubble has been named Aya.  She's improving, no spinal damage per docs. Her great uncle will take her in. Also pulled a 16 year old girl from the rubble in Turkey, 80 hours after.

Fuck Erdoğan. One of the only good things that could come from this disaster (apart from better enforcement of building codes) is him getting destroyed in May's elections. This part of Türkiye is a stronghold of his and - needless to say - they are not pleased with him or his government.

Same as any other strong-arm dictator,  Erdogan will not lose an election.  His exit from power can only come by his death, a coup, or fleeing to exile.

Much like Orbán in Hungary, there's a veneer of democracy in Türkiye that Erdoğan still needs to deal with. It's why he's making stupid promises about re-housing everyone within a year. These soft dictatorships win elections by controlling the message via state media, jailing the opposition (if they appear to be too much of a threat) and handing out goodies left and right. Fragmenting the opposition is more important than imprisoning them. Neither country is a single party dictatorship; it's just that AK and Fidesz have all the ingrained advantages.

Pinochet in Chile and the military dictatorship in Brazil both lost power via the ballot box - in Brazil to the "Diretas Já" (direct elections now) movement, and in Chile via a plebiscite that Pinochet lost by 11 points. Both occurred because the opposition coalesced against leaders that thought their systematic advantages would hold as they had in other elections. While Erdoğan still has those advantages, enraging his own supporters may well cost him. Perhaps not, but it is still possible (it is also possible, as you say, that it will take a coup - but this tragedy makes that more likely as well).

this pales in comparison to the human toll...

but as i watched this video i just thought of the desperation and excitement you can hear in the voices of the rescuers...and how important it was for them to save this one living creature. i cannot even imagine the devastation and gruesomeness they've had to face...saving this one pupper meant something to them, you can feel it ❤️🐕bless them all.
