He has athleticism, he was a menace in the playoffs last year, and he might be our best defensive player in 3 years if he grows into his frame. There is a reason Harbaugh wanted him.

He might be one of our better options as a 3rd down pass rush specialist now. If for no other reason than being able to bat down a few passes. Would you take 5 batted down balls or 2 sacks?

The Longhorns have added Bobby Merritt, a former NFL scout, CFL executive to the fold

Steve Sarkisian, Texas beef up personnel, scouting department with major addition

JOHN BRICE      47 MINUTES AGO

When the University of Texas hired Steve Sarkisian hours after New Year’s Day 2021, it committed unprecedented resources – manpower, finances – to ensure Sarkisian’s best chance for success.

Some 16 months later, the Longhorns continue to invest in the football program’s success – and their latest off-the-field staff addition is a significant one.  Bobby Merritt, with approximately a dozen years’ NFL experience, as well as personnel work in the Southeastern Conference and as a front office executive in the Canadian Football League, has joined Sarkisian’s staff in an off-the-field, personnel and scouting role, multiple sources told FootballScoop.

It’s a significant addition to Sarkisian’s already strong football support staff, which has beefed up its recruiting and personnel departments to reflect a deep pool of both seasoned and up-and-coming staffers to assist in two key areas the Longhorns have prioritized in their quest to return to national prominence.

A longtime top scout for the Houston Texans who had a lead role in the franchise’s selection of former franchise pillar and future Pro Football Hall of Famer J.J. Watt, Merritt had deep NFL experience with a couple of different franchises before he transitioned years ago to the SEC and specifically the University of Tennessee, where he reunited with Bob Welton – another former well-regarded NFL scout who transitioned to a successful career in college personnel. Welton now runs the personnel department for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.

After Merritt’s time on Rocky Top and the University of Houston, he was hired into a top scouting role with the CFL’s Edmonton Elks. Soon thereafter, Merritt transitioned into a greater role as the venerable franchise’s assistant general manager.

“Bobby is an experienced talent evaluator,” Edmonton GM Brock Sunderland said in a statement last year at the time of Merritt’s advancement, “who has spent over a decade as an NFL scout along with multiple roles at NCAA programs. He’s spent the last four years evaluating players for the CFL, and we’re excited to promote him to our assistant GM.”

Merritt and his family long have made Houston home, and he’s already transitioned into the Texas program. He’s expected to serve a key role for the Longhorns in both opposition- and self-scouting.

This must be the "GM of the portal" that some of the $9.95 sites have been "predicting" that Texas would need.

Waiting to see Tapp. HE is probably has the most athleticism and upside on the edge, but I would also put money on him being the first to leave the program. I can see this guy being a  JAg

Hard to imagine it being worse than last year, but I suppose it could. But if we can’t get there, just jump up and down at the LOS. I am not serious but……..

I would expect good pass rushers will command lots of $$$. Him being bred in SEC country probably won’t help.

OK, class, our cool new word of the day is "transitioned." Say it with me: trans-ISH'-und, transitioned. That's it. Now, I want you to give me no more than 500 words, in which you must use transitioned at least four times. Got it? OK, begin writing.

The real issue is getting to passing situations. Cool to talk about the pass rush but you need to get to 3rd and 7 first.

Well cut that shit out, how can we compete with vanderbilt, South Carolina and aggy. You’re putting the cart before the horse bud

Humidor:

By: Eric and Justin

Some quick housecleaning before we get into team superlatives:

— The players are currently doing optional open gym workouts like many of us did during summers in high school. Once their finals are done, they’re free to return home where they’ll hopefully continue their workouts. Most will.

— The freshmen enroll on May 29th. The rest of the team returns on May 30th at the latest. The team reports on May 31st and then summer workouts will soon begin.

— We asked sources about Xavier Worthy and Jahdae Barron nearly entering the portal. There was a lot of shock in the locker room with most program sources in the dark until after there was resolution, especially on Worthy. The overlying theme was they’re glad those guys stayed but nobody was really happy about the timing and the hope is there won’t be any distractions going forward.

Team superlatives, which isn’t to say all these guys are great, but they’re the best at Texas based on spring ball.

Top run blocker: Junior Angilau (two sources)

Top pass blocker: Hayden Conner or Christian Jones (one source). Andrej Karic (one source).

Top pass rusher: DeMarvion Overshown at linebacker, Ovie Oghoufo at Buck, T’Vondre Sweat on DL (one source). The source added on Sweat, “when he wants to, he can get after the passer. But Alfred Collins could and should be the best this year.” Ovie Oghoufo (one source).

Best hands: Jordan Whittington or Roschon Johnson (one source). “Whittington doesn’t drop much and Roschon never does.” Ja’Tavion Sanders, Whittington, D’Shawn Jamison (one source). “Sanders’ hands stood out the most in spring ball.”

Best route runner: Whittington or Isaiah Neyor (one source). “Both guys are savvy veterans running routes.” Whittington (two sources). “Whittington’s change of direction and quickness get him separation, then he’s fast on top of it, running over 22 miles per hour.”

Best blocking receiver: Whittington (two sources).

With no mention of Xavier Worthy at receiver IT asked what makes him so good (not like we don’t know, but, you know). “Elite quickness, elite speed. Speed and acceleration. He switches speeds like nothing. He’s smooth and he’s tough. He takes football seriously.”

Best DB cover skills: Jahdae Barron, Ryan Watts, or D’Shawn Jamison (one source). The source had trouble differentiating because each guy does good things in coverage, i.e., Barron technique, Watts physicality, and Jamison‘s ability to stick with receivers and jump routes.

What makes Barron so promising? “He’s more athletic than people realize. If he were to test he’d do really well. On top of athleticism, he plays with good technique.”

Fastest players in pads: Worthy, Keilan Robinson, Whittington, Jamison, and Ryan Watts. “Watts might take more steps than Barron to get up to full speed but once he’s there he can run.” Barron and Isaiah Neyor were mentioned as fast but not like the guys above. Jaydon Blue probably deserves honorable mention but he wasn’t named.

They might want to reconsider using those two sources.

That’s still “call the wide zone run” territory for this defense.

It's one of those timelapse things to show the sunset. I think that was filmed over a two day period.

Two days to move about 3 miles of highway. That's the 35 I remember

With this defense, I’d just be happy forcing a third down of any distance

That is the point. There is lot of worry about the pass rush and it is warranted, but #1 issue on defense is improving the run defense. Texas needs to get competent in C and D gaps. Forcing offenses into obvious passing situations will go a long way to getting a pass rush.   At minimum PK can channel his inner Orlando and dial up exotic blitzes to help. When it’s 3rd and 4 or less, you have to play honest. Playing honest defense is much harder.

Maybe our next DC will coach run fits. Fucking mediocre Chris Ash did that.

Just got back from Vegas. PSA for degenerates and kool aid chuggers: Boyd’s Heisman odds for Bijan are currently 50/1. This appears to be a big market inefficiency when  comparing it to the Caesars/Williams Hill app which currently has him at 18/1.

After literally losing every draft bet, this is what I did with the $55 left in my obliterated bank roll.

This is how I win it all back.

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian to lean on Alabama experience during SEC transition but says Longhorns will do what 'best suits us'

May 4, 22  Adam Rittenberg    ESPN Sr Writer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is focused on the Big 12 as he attends meetings this week alongside the league's other nine football coaches. The Big 12, like other leagues holding their spring gatherings, is addressing several major items impacting the future of college sports.

"For us, at the end of the day, we're in the Big 12," Sarkisian said. "It's important to know the direction of the conference and direction of college football and where we are going on a lot of these topics. ... We're in the Big 12, so we need to know the direction of where the conference is going right now."

But Sarkisian also is mindful of Texas' upcoming transition to the SEC and what it will take to succeed in a new league. Texas and Oklahoma will remain in the Big 12 until 2025 unless the schools negotiate an earlier exit to the SEC.

Sarkisian spent part of three seasons in the SEC on the Alabama coaching staff under Nick Saban, winning a national title as offensive coordinator in 2020.

Although his time at Alabama will inform him before the SEC move, he said Texas will remain its own distinct program.

"There's a lot of great aspects of [Alabama] that I think we can take with us, but naturally, we have to do the things I'm comfortable doing and doing it the way that best suits us," Sarkisian said. "There's great coaches in the SEC, there's really good players, there's big people, there's fast people. We've got to assemble a really good staff, which I think we've done. We've got to recruit on a really high level, which I think that we've shown that we can do. And then ultimately get those players big enough, faster and stronger."

Sarkisian noted the SEC's success in last week's NFL draft, as it led all conferences with 65 selections, 17 more than the Big Ten and 40 more than the Big 12. Texas did not have any players drafted after Sarkisian's first season as coach, just the second time since 1938 that no Longhorns heard their names called.

Texas doesn't plan to overhaul its recruiting strategy for the SEC, as Sarkisian said, "I feel like all the teams in the SEC want to recruit Texas."

"I feel like there's a fine line there of making sure that we take care of the players that are in our home state," he added. "We already naturally go into Louisiana; that makes sense for us. We signed a kid from Mississippi this year; we signed a kid from Birmingham, Alabama, this year. So I think there's some natural progression that way. Are we going to make a living in recruiting Florida and Georgia? Probably not. And this doesn't mean that we're not going to recruit California, either."

Sarkisian said Texas will continue to adapt and evolve with name, image and likeness. Several media outlets reported that Longhorns standout wide receiver Xavier Worthy turned down a sizable NIL offer from another Power 5 program to remain at Texas.

"I understand it, I get it, Xavier Worthy was a heck of a player, a freshman All-American, broke a lot of records," Sarkisian said. "Of course, people were going to try and use NIL to entice him to go to their school, so you've got to proactive when it comes to those things."

Other than the team's 5-7 record in 2021, Sarkisian has viewed his time at Texas as positive, especially the start to 2022. He said the climate around the program has been supportive and unified.

"Ultimately, we got to start winning some more games, I'm not naive to that," he said. "But as far as just people tugging and pulling and moving in different directions, no. I felt like everybody is moving in a positive direction. That was something that I challenged our fan base to do, our donors to do, our administration to do, was trust the fact that you hired me to do a job; let's get on board and let's all move in the same direction to make this thing special again."
