Mitch McConnell

When people talk about how dirty politics is they aren't talking about Trump, he's just a normal criminal pathological incompetent,  they are talking about Mitch. Trump has no concept of what the right thing to do in any situation is, Mitch knows the difference and chooses to be the worst.

When liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at age 87, six weeks before the 2020 presidential election, Mitch McConnell wasted no time.

The Senate majority leader, a powerful Republican from Kentucky, quickly reached President Donald Trump on the phone and made his plan clear, a FRONTLINE documentary reports.

“McConnell told [Trump] two things,” Josh Holmes, McConnell’s former chief of staff, told FRONTLINE in the above excerpt from Supreme Revenge: Battle for the Court, premiering Tuesday, Nov. 24. “McConnell said, first, I’m going to put out a statement that says we’re going to fill the vacancy. Second, he said, you’ve gotta nominate Amy Coney Barrett.”

It was a very different approach than McConnell had taken four-and-a-half years prior, when he refused to allow the Senate to consider President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, after Justice Antonin Scalia died more than eight months before the 2016 presidential election.

But as sources recount in the documentary, charges of hypocrisy did not deter McConnell. In the aftermath of Ginsburg’s death, McConnell’s political maneuvering went according to his plan — with Barrett’s speedy confirmation days before the 2020 election serving as a crowning achievement in a hard-fought, decades-long effort to tilt the ideology of the nation’s highest court to the right.

One of the biggest POS of all time but a savvy politician, I will give him that. He makes Ted Cruz look like a fucking amateur.

The man has done and continues to do huge damage to this country. I have zero, zilch, respect for him. I hope he dies alone and shoots straight to hell. And shares an oven with Trump Sr and Jr, Cruz and Graham.

That's the issue; apparently there is staunch opposition to direct payments. Crazy when the wealthy made billions from this pandemic that they now wish to avoid liability and keep a paltry $1200 from the labor that provided that largesse.

Pelosi and Mitch have been talking, and the GOP is going to get everything they want.

Yeah, we know plenty of people for whom that would really help out, including plenty of Trump voters, as well as a lot of small businesses that I question whether they will be around 6 months from now, or hell, even 3 months from now.

It's really odd how, in an election year, the Republicans wouldn't rush out with such payments and scream from the rooftops about how they are helping the lower and middle classes.

Millionaires got their money in the Spring, no strings and now worries of investigations for NEED at all.  Free money if you had a loan at any bank, that did not want you to default.  Cool thing was it was seamless, not an ounce of pain for the wealthy.

December 26th long term unemployment ends and we put up a shitty as hell 245K new jobs in November and the GOP is not the least bit worried about ending benefits, nor additional funds for the millions expected to find those 245K jobs, and this is BEFORE the new covid surge.  December will likely be even worse.

Now the McConnell strategy is the same as it was for Obama, throttle as many opportunities for the economy to improve in the hopes of a 2024 victory for the GOP.

You know, that should be a huge warning beacon to Trumpers than Mitch believes Biden is the winner and will be sworn in - if Trump had won, I have no doubt that Mitch would be rushing to get through a bunch of stuff that could help the economy and help out those impacted by Covid, so that

A) Trump isn't screaming at him to do something about the economy and

B) Boost the economy so that the Dems have less to run on in 2020.

Of course, it's always hostage negotiations.  And their hostages continuously vote them in.  Go figure.

Mitch is probably the most effective American politician of the 21st century to date.

Depends how you look at it.  He is effectively kicking off the end of America unless someone else manages to stop it. If that is the goal of an American politican, then he has been the most effective. If the goal is to maintain stability while also pushing through your policies, then he has been an abject failure.

But I do think Mitch suffers from the same syndrome as many conservatives. He believes America will continue to exist simply because it has been existing. However, like any nation, America operates under a social compact. Mitch has damaged that social compact irreparably.  So when/if we collapse, Mitch's name will be in the first paragraph of future history books regarding that collapse.  Is that the work of an effective politican?

I know that never Trump conservatives like yourself think you can put the shit back in the horse and we will all just get along again, but that ship has sailed. 30 to 40% of this nation are Trump supporters who would already revolt because they believe the election was fraudulent. You also have around 25% of the nation who are leftists who are done with the charade as well after Trump/Mitch. Biden is like a bandaid on a Chernobyl victim. The patient is already dead. He just doesn't know it yet.

If your goal is to ruin America and potentially turn it into a Nazi/apartheid state then yes, Mitch certainly has been the most effective American politician of the 21st century to date. Bravo to Moscow Mitch and his backers.

I have Ana on ignore but I really hate people who squawk about how "effective" McConnell.  He's very good at doing nothing except destroying the country.  He adds nothing.

I would define "effective" in this context as "achieving the political goals that that individual has laid out". Mitch has clearly executed to that end over the last 10+ years. You don't have to like him nor his goals. I don't. But to question his effectiveness as a politician is a bit delusional. Right up in bullnecks alley.

He was pretty clear I think in terms of his goals wrt the supreme court. He fucking landing that plane and then landed two more. Step back for a second and tell me which politician put it on the line and took a greater risk that paid out than McConnell. Don't get caught up in whether you agree or not, just whether he executed the play he went all in on and cashed out. He played the game and won in the short term.  I think he loses in the long term, but again, to date he has been the most effective American politician of the 21st century.

What risk exactly did he take?

He threw norms in the trash can to get what he wanted. Bravo. That doesn’t make him a great politician. It just makes him a huge asshole.

And also, I didn't say it made him a great politician. Or an admirable politician. Or not an asshole. I said that he was effective at achieving his objectives.

If you think that you can name a more effective American politician of the 21st century, I am willing to accept alternate suggestions.

Did his objectives include destroying congressional decorum permanently and bringing the nation to the brink of collapse?  Because he did those things. And if he didn't have them as goals then he was an ineffective politician. He wanted to make a long term change to the Supreme Court. If it is only short term, then he was even ineffective in achieving that goal.

And 21st?  There have been no effective politicians, Mitch included. Obama was the most effective though. Mitch and Trump offer almost zero legislation as their legacy.

This is the end, my friend.

Seems to me that his primary objective was to shape the American judiciary. No rational person would argue that he has not achieved this objective. Will it be durable?  I don't know. To be determined. Why I italicized to date in the earlier post.  Everything that he has accomplished can be undone. Will it?  TBD.

Who knew that greed was terminal?  Mitch thinks he's untouchable and his policies won't affect him.  It worked well until Il Duce was hung up by a meat hook.

He is untouchable.  He will die of old age, while still in office, and none of those policies will affect he and his cronies and supporters.

I think his policies definitely will affect his supporters--they're jobless and getting Covid as well.

That built in advantage has always been there. In the past, rural party leaders recognized that and tried to work with the populace somewhat. Mitch went all in on tyranny.  Right wing populists always wanted to burn it down. Because of Mitch, left wing populists want to burn it down now as well.  For the first time ever, we probably have a majority of Americans that want it burned down, and that includes the Civil War. In the Civil War, the majority wanted to keep it together. This is largely due to Mitch, not Trump.  Mitch was super effective in getting the kitchen remodeled, but he left the gas running on the stove, so that supposed effectiveness is worth nothing.

Even though LBJ explained it well,  I still find it stupefying that poor Kentuckians continue to uncritically support him.

You're confusing voters with the people he actually cares about - BMDs and lobbyists.

He gives no fuck if his voters are jobless and getting covid.

It's hitching a ride on the defense measure, so yes. The carve outs or whatever you call them are not as strict as I'd like. A business with over 20 employees is exempt, so that isn't going to be too difficult to get around for large money operations. The SBOs are opposed, saying it penalizes them with extra regulation and that does complicate things on their end. We'll see how it goes and if it survives. It did have some bi-part support.
