Three points to consider, before adopting a “woe is us” attitude about the offense:

1) Dusty rarely marched out our optimal lineup this season, and certainly not multiple times in a row.  We should see that lineup more in the playoffs.

2) Playoff history has shown us that great pitching beats great hitting when it matters most.  (See Scherzer and Strasburg, 2019, for a recent example)

3) Playoff Altuve unlocked.

Here’s one amazing stat for each playoff team.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

(1) Astros

Houston is a juggernaut and one of their important hitters is Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez swings a powerful bat and one we can quantify with Statcast. This season, 23.9% of Alvarez’s swings produced hard contact, the highest rate of any hitter with at least 250 batted balls. For comparison, Aaron Judge is seventh on the list at 19.9%, and we know powerful he is. Why do we care about this hard contact? Because it produces favorable results. This season, batters hit .488 and slugged .953 when they made hard contact -- an exit velocity of 95+ mph. And lest we forget, this is the same Alvarez who was ALCS MVP last year for the Astros, slugging a casual .870 and hitting .522.

I know we’ve covered this, but they’re gonna have to tweak this new format. Both the Astros and Dodgers seem to have a tougher draw than their leagues #2 seed.

Dodgers-yes. Astros- I don’t really see much difference in any of the 4 teams in the WC round.

That’s fair. I still think the top 2 wild card teams will almost always produce a better team than the worst division champ vs. third wild card.

And before anyone opines that it cheapens the division title no the Braves by winning the NL West get the bye while the Mets who got swept when it counted they have to burn their horses for the right to rematch against the Braves and start in Atlanta.

If the Mets win they play the Dodgers.

If Mariners win this WC series do they bring back Castillo on short rest for game 1?

Or start him game 2 on full read and have him on short rest for game 5 if it goes that long? We
