I would assume that is the reason, but it seems there would have been a bigger tsunami due to sea floor displacement. This one is very strange.

Shanghai is fucked

File under: Things You Never Would Have Imagined (three years ago)

The Shanghai lockdown has resulted in factory shutdowns and a worldwide shortage of the contrast agent ("dye") used for CT scans and some other stuff.

So for the next 6-8 weeks, don't be involved in a major trauma, have a blood clot to your lungs, or have cancer.  Kthxbai.

Yes. I have already heard rumblings about this at work.

Had a friend years back that worked for the Austin Milk bank.  Essentially a voluntary drop-off process for mothers milk from mom's with a surplus.  For NICU babies, it's utterly and absolutely life saving.  Problem is the distillation process (or whatever they do) is so significant a lot becomes a little in a hurry, so there's never enough to go around.

Good luck my man!

Damn didn’t know this existed. We had a metric fuck ton at one point.

Shit. Looks like more dominos could be falling.

If you read the fine print, they are have a ton of loop holes in the ban, and they will still likely be a net exporter this year.

And how much wheat does India export anyway?

Pretty much a rounding error on the world scene. In a good production year they might hit 10 MMT, in a poor year they might import that. In any event nobody is relying on Indian wheat on a regular basis besides India.

Everyone going low carb, very soon

Except for the avian flu decimating chicken and turkey farms across the US.

And a major source of fertilizer gone because of Russian sanctions and all.

California drought reducing one of the most fertile sources of fresh fruit and vegetables in the US.

High oils prices making it more expensive to ship food.

World hunger is gonna be a real thing for the next few years.

Sorry if already posted, but the new President of Hungary has some bombs on her. I think we found a solution to the baby formula shortage.

Mali in the news.

BAMAKO, May 15 (Reuters) - Mali is pulling out of a multi-national military force in West Africa's Sahel region combatting an Islamist insurgency, the country's military junta said in a statement on Sunday.

The G5 Sahel force, which includes troops from Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania, was set up in 2017 to counter jihadists who have swept across the region in recent years, killing thousands of people and forcing millions to flee their homes.

Yeah, it's liquid gold in the NICU.  Apparently nothing helps save premature babies more.

Reverse in Policy

If Somalia was a landlocked country and didn't border a sensitive body of water, we probably wouldn't be there.  It's interesting to read up on the history of that area in the Cold War, and how much the US and Soviets went back and forth on who they supported, etc.

This is one of those situations where everybody (UN leadership, stable African countries, etc.) needs to come together and figure out how to take care of these groups, because they just keep popping back up.  We have been lucky so far that all of these smallish extremist groups bicker too much to come together and unite.  The French did a lot of heavy lifting in Mali for a long time.

True Dat. But it is a perfect launching ground for fuckery across the region.

Dad spent a lot of time there. Said society is Brother is Brother, Clan is Clan. Somalia is Somalia. In that order. Asked a Somali partner about this and he laughed and said no clearer way of putting it. Toss Khat and Religion into that mix and pretty rough region. But Al Shabaab needs to be dealt with. These dudes get a lot of support from outside sources and really hate us, Kenya, Ethiopia, you name it.

Reports from a retired friend (Attache) is that Burundi's Peacekeepers got hammered, gave a base over to the bad guys and it is a critical area. My buddy in Nairobi watches it closely from a development perspective. Sadly, security is a reality in that world so he pays attention.

Just adding about Mali. See the news they are leaving the regional PKO mission? Well that means the EU forces are out. All that is left will be Malian forces (who get their asses kicked all the time) and the UN (who don't do much except patrol and make rent go up). Add to this the potential of a food crisis and the Sahel from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean/Red Sea is going to be interesting to watch.

"by some measures".  I'd argue that because it was more scattered and has been driven out of certain areas, and because there are a lot of power struggles and would-be leaders, that it's weaker, but they do benefit from a lack of unified opposition in many areas.  Whatever you think of CriticalThreats.org/AEI, it's an interesting read.

Well at least this time when I have to sit in line for gas, I won't have those hot ass pleather seats like mom's Monte Carlo.

I don't wanna sound like surly's loveable paranoid nutcase, but it's going to be ug-lee this summer.

I have a feeling lots of folks are going to find out some inconvenient truths.

Just got off a call (yes, 3AM texas time) with some groups in the UAE to discuss this. They are nervous. It is going to be bad. For those of us who remember Ethiopia's famine in the 1980s, well add that to a bunch of locations. Millions are about to starve and there is very little that can be done.

Fuck 2022. Give me back 2020.

Just add a couple grain ships to each of our carrier battle groups and get to work.

US ain't starving.

The US and other western countries will pay the market clearing price for food and energy. The countries that can’t afford that price will go broke and/or experience massive shortages. Thus, this thread.

China still pretty locked down in parts. When they finally open up it will provide a new inflationary surge of demand for oil amongst other things.
