The funny thing to me is that when removing sanctions on Venezuela's oil was broached, both of our political parties threw a shit fit over it. Venezuela would make the most sense out of Iran, Russia, or Venezuela, but irrational politics...

Numbers we are hearing is worse than that. Remember food aid goes down to in-country organizations. A lot of it is stolen and sold on the market. WFP rarely openly distributes. Neither does USAID. They are collection and allocation groups.

get ready for a lot more Sally Struthers commercials.

Good internet rabbit hole on Urea being issue as it’s a major piece of the exhaust fluid. Urea also used in fertilizer as well as a bunch of other shit.

Shortage of Urea goes back to last fall/winter. Doesn’t sound like getting any better.

Went down to Port Aransas this weekend and did my share of peeing in the Gulf. You're welcome.

Ecuador’s government is trying to retake control of Puyo, a city in the country’s Amazon region, after violent clashes and the burning of a police station by demonstrations during nationwide protests against the economic policies of President Guillermo Lasso.

Protests have been ongoing for more than a week, with marchers and major indigenous groups angry at rising cost of food and other basic goods. The protests - longer-lasting and larger than marches over fuel prices in October last year - are testing Lasso’s ability to restart the country’s economy and kick start employment.

Gas shortages everywhere.

Putin is counting on this to put pressure to end a lot of the sanctions and get things back to normal.

It's brutal, and will result in plenty of deaths and hardship, but it can be effective.  Supply and demand at work.  He's willing to bet that he can shut the gas off to Europe, which drives up prices everywhere else as European countries then compete for non-Russian gas.

But it's also risky, because like was mentioned in the Ukraine thread, Europe may very well wean itself off of Russian o&g, and then he'll have to make that up elsewhere once supplies begin to stabilize.  Short term, it's effective though.

The war in Ukraine has forced Russia to decrease its military presence in areas that may soon face a Turkish offensive, Syrian opposition officials told The Daily Beast this week.

The officials, including members of the opposition Syrian National Army (SNA), said Moscow has withdrawn from several areas in northwestern Syria near the Turkish border, including Tal Rifaat, where Ankara has said it would carry out a military operation to combat the U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers a terrorist group.

Quote

The SNA, a coalition of rebel groups backed by Turkey, would take part in the possible operation, according to Yusuf Hammoud, an officer and former spokesperson for the SNA. Hammoud, who is based in northwestern Afrin, Syria, said Russia has cut its presence in areas around Aleppo and Tal Rifaat. “It will make it easier for Turkey to win this war,” Hammoud told The Daily Beast.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that his country will carry out a military operation in the northwestern cities of Tal Rifaat and Manbij near the Turkish border to create a “safe zone” where 1 million Syrian refugees could return.

Quote

Tensions between Syrian refugees and locals in Turkey have been rising, putting domestic pressure on Erdogan, whose popularity has declined amid an economic crisis a year before national elections are due.

If there is an attempt to take these areas, it risks a direct confrontation between NATO member Turkey and groups allied with Russia.

Quote

While Erdogan has continued support for opposition rebel groups, he has had to placate the competing interests of Russia, a nearby nuclear power with a permanent UN security council seat and a crucial source of energy and tourism to Turkey.

After Moscow introduced economic sanctions against Turkey for downing a fighter jet in 2015 that Ankara said had violated its airspace, Russia said Erdogan had apologized for the incident.

Quote

If the Kremlin now tacitly accepts a Turkish incursion into areas it or its allies control, it could be seen as a sign of how the invasion of Ukraine has overstretched the Russian military and it can no longer enforce its interests or its allies, even against a country with less geopolitical weight and military power.

Oh please. Why are you pretending to need justification for negging me here? 😂 You’re a frequent flyer in my notifications.

When I find articles, I go out of my way to find tweets that share it in an apolitical fashion, since people like yourself can’t look past the messenger. That was the most vanilla one I could find. I have no idea who the hell that person is.

The relevant passage.

“At a summit of EU leaders later this week, the EU was planning a new initiative that would structurally decrease poorer nations' reliance on Russian fertilisers by helping them develop their own fertiliser plants.

But at a meeting with EU envoys last week, the EU Commission explicitly opposed the text, warning that supporting fertiliser production in developing nations would be inconsistent with the EU energy and environment policies, officials said.“

I posted it here because it pertains to food security. EU is putting environmental concerns over global food security here. That’s pretty clear.

Yeah if you just don’t give a fuck about anything it’s his best move. I’m not sure he cares as much about the sanctions. They affect the general population of Russia, but not really the bottom line for his army. It’s just how he can get Europe to push for negotiations and concessions from Kyiv.

They're having the exact opposite impact they were designed to enact.  It might be time to revisit these.  Putin is making more after the war than before

Embargo "boomerang" impact

With China and India buying the Russian oil shunned by the West in an effort to force an end to the Ukraine invasion, Moscow is earning more now than it did before the war.

Quote

China and India, the world’s most populous countries, have swooped in to buy roughly the same volume of Russian oil that would have gone to the West. Oil prices are so high that Russia is making even more money now from sales than it did before the war began four months ago. And its once-flailing currency has surged in value against the dollar.

Quote

But in the short term, the United States and its Western allies had been counting on economic sanctions, not criminal prosecutions, to persuade Moscow to back down, or at least degrade its ability to sustain the war. For now, at least, that tactic appears to have boomeranged, given surging demand in Asia for oil from Russia, the world’s third-largest producer of oil after the United States and Saudi Arabia.

We're even seeing India buying crude at a premium and selling it on the open market, making money by shopping it back to the US and Europe.

It will be very difficult to walk those sanctions back. It will be seen as weakness. Which is why you’d wish there was better foresight from the people implementing them. These things have to be war gamed out? It was not hard to see the unintended consequences of some of these sanctions.  And if you suggest that here (not on this thread necessarily), well you get all kinds of slander tossed your way by seemingly smart people.

The other monster mistake we’ll see over time was the seizing of central bank reserves. That’s going to change a ton of things geopolitically. This thread is probably not the best place to discuss that though.
