Had a friend alert me to this yesterday.  The Peace Corp has been driven out of Ukraine due to the war, but prior to that they'd been working in Ukraine fulfilling their mission.  They've published this cookbook before as a fundraiser, sold out, and are now republishing to raise funds for this war.  There are several donation tiers.  $30 gets you the cookbook, $100 and you'll receive also a pre-recorded video of a Ukrainian chef teaching you how to make a honey cake.

Our team of Returned Peace Corps Ukraine Volunteers is excited to present you with a very special cookbook fundraiser for Ukraine: Babusya’s Kitchen. We are now accepting pre-orders! Place your order now to receive one of the first copies of Babusya’s Kitchen

You can purchase a hardcover copy for $30. Note - it's a quirk of our website that this order form shows up as a ticketed event. It is, in fact, an order form to buy a cookbook! The price includes the cost of shipping. Please note that at this time, we can only offer shipping within the contiguous United States and are unable to ship to Hawaii and Alaska or internationally.

On the pre-order form, you will also have the opportunity to make a donation towards the printing of the cookbooks. Donations of $100 or above will receive an exclusive pre-recorded cooking class from Ukrainian baker, Galyna Halavurta, teaching you how to make the famous Ukrainian Medovyk (honey cake).

About the Cookbook

Since Peace Corps Ukraine opened in 1992, over 3,400 Americans have served as Peace Corps Volunteers, calling Ukraine home for two or more years. We taught English in schools and universities, organized summer camps and environmental projects for youths, and supported tourism and other economic development programs for our communities. Along the way, we found deep friendships with Ukrainians, built on trust, respect, and even love. We also learned to cherish Ukrainian culture, history, and, of course, the food.

Babusya’s Kitchen was originally written for Volunteers to use during their two years of service in Ukraine. We included contributions from Peace Corps Volunteers, staff, host families, and recipes from our own kitchens that were modified for life in Ukraine, providing Volunteers with the instructions needed to make local dishes at home and to recreate American and international favorites with the ingredients available at their local stores and outdoor markets. We made memories—planting and harvesting at our host family‘s dacha, making homemade pampushki for borshch, and learning to prepare celebratory dishes such as Easter paska and Christmas kutya. Equally important, we shared our own favorite dishes from home with our adoptive Ukrainian family and friends. Whether banana bread or a traditional American Thanksgiving feast, those shared meals provided an opportunity to reciprocate the extraordinary hospitality of Ukraine.

As of the writing of this new edition in March 2022, there are no U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in Ukraine—only an unwanted and unprovoked war. As an act of peaceful protest, the RPCV Alliance for Ukraine—in direct support of the Peace Corps’ 3rd goal to strengthen Americans’ understanding of the world and its people—is republishing Babusya’s Kitchen to raise funds for Ukraine relief efforts.

This newly adapted RPCV Alliance for Ukraine edition of Peace Corps Ukraine’s Babusya’s Kitchen is designed to raise awareness of Ukraine’s rich culinary contributions and inspire new American audiences to make a pot of borshch or, for those feeling brave, even try your hand at holodets

Note - It's a quirk of our website that this order form shows up as a ticketed event. You are, in fact, ordering a cookbook! We can only ship to addresses in the continental United States.
