Highlights

Bail for Jaclyn Edison, the daughter-in-law of slain Austin jeweler Ted Shaughnessy, has been reduced.

Sources say Edison, 19, is cooperating with the ongoing homicide investigation into Shaughnessy’s death.

The bail for the daughter-in-law of a slain Austin jeweler has been reduced, and she is helping investigators unravel an alleged murder-for-hire plot against him, according to law enforcement sources.

The sources say Jaclyn Edison, 19, has begun cooperating with the ongoing investigation to find out who shot and killed Gallerie Jewelers owner Ted Shaughnessy in his southwestern Travis County home in March.

Prosecutor Amy Meredith said she could not comment on the specifics of the ongoing investigation. However, she said, authorities “have continued to follow investigative leads. Based upon that information, we have agreed to a bond reduction with all the conditions that we have requested.”

Edison is married to Shaughnessy’s 19-year-old son, Nicolas. Both face a charge of solicitation to commit capital murder.

The couple received national attention late last month after Travis County sheriff’s investigators charged them with the first-degree felony and released an arrest affidavit that included details of the steps police say the couple took to have Ted Shaughnessy and his wife, Corey, killed.

Nicolas Shaughnessy had told associates, according to the affidavit, that he could gain as much as $8 million in life insurance and property.

Prosecutors agreed to reduce Edison’s bail from $1 million to $250,000, with a 10 percent cash deposit, paving the way for her release from jail.

Edison was released Friday afternoon, but Nicolas Shaughnessy remained in the Travis County Jail on Friday.

Edison must wear an ankle monitor bracelet, surrender her passport and have no contact with Nicolas Shaughnessy, Corey Shaughnessy or a third person connected to the case.

She also must attend counseling and will have a curfew.

Investigators say a teenager accused of hiring someone to kill his father was going through “financial difficulties” leading up to the deadly shooting in southwest Travis County.

An investigator also found a torn-up paper inside 19-year-old Nicolas Shaughnessy’s College Station apartment. According to search warrants recently obtained by KXAN, when law enforcement pieced the paper back together, it “appeared to depict a hand-drawn diagram of the murder crime scene.”

Nicolas’ father, Theodore "Ted" Shaughnessy, 55, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds after an early-morning intruder began firing at him and his wife around 4:45 a.m. March 2. Investigators say the intruder was in the home at least 17 minutes before the first shot was fired, but the property inside was not disturbed.

Nicolas was the sole beneficiary of $2 million in the event of his parent’s death, according to a search warrant.

Weird, wild, wacky stuff.

They didn't really explain the toxicity of the kids' relationship and how that gave rise to a motive to murder.

Although this seems a really grotesque crime, my criminal sentencing reform brain tends to think 35 years is enough, notwithstanding early release possibilities. although I think early release and "second look" are something we vitally need.  Probably not operative any time soon in this case.

Based on what?  Comparison to other outrageously long sentences?

Evidence shows that people age out of crime.  That's two adult lifetimes.  The shitheads will all be 55 plus.  Another 10 years is an effective life sentence, another 20 assuredly so.

Is it retribution?  Incapacitation? What?

Wild story. At least one of the youngsters involved appeared to be an Austin High guy. The non tatted up detective was definitely a teacher and volleyball coach at Austin high

The murderous son looked like a yell leader when he was in the clink. Was his bitch enrolled at A&M?

Murder for hire is capital murder (life without parole or death) for both the actor and solicitor. Killing two people is capital murder. That was the plan that was half executed but for the mother firing back. This unrepentant asshole (you can see it in the interview) tried to kill his parents for money. What an ungrateful piece of shit. Incapacitation, deterrence, retribution. Some crimes are beyond the goal of rehabilitation. He’s dead to his own mother.

He was lucky to get 35. A damn good job by his defense attorney who is a friend of mine.
