I've decided to dig a hole

That's probably why they aren't on there.  We have another well on our property that was done in the early 1990s that isn't logged.  I guess the state didn't collect all the permits and well data prior to around 2000.

Yeah, the well at my parents' house, likely dug in 1957 when the house was built and then deepened in the 1990s after someone started irrigating crops down the road, isn't on there either.

Depends on the area. If there is no groundwater conservation district you can drill all you want with no paperwork. GCD's are like HOA's. A giant pita.

I'm alive. Barely. It's been rain in the forecast each weekend and I'm on what feels like day 21 of rsv/cold/flu/covid. And now begins spring sport weekend season, so time is a bit more scarce. On top of that, big wind blew off half my tree house roof, and I need to get new metal panels up. Sigh.

Have you seen a physician? Whether you have health insurance may factor into this, but I would urge you to get that checked out if you're not improving. While cough and fatigue can take a couple of weeks to subside, especially with URI, it wouldn't hurt to have a doctor take a look and rule out a secondary infection etc. I'm not a doctor, but am the queen of developing secondary illnesses due to a weaker immune system. Learned that the hard way and it's much more $$ in the long run. Take care of yourself!

Pulled out the 8ft wood ladder. Too short on the deep end. Put a folding extension ladder. Got about 28 buckets out of the "shallow side"

My buckets:

So I'm about 11' even across the bottom. Next time I'll bring up some 2x10s for side lagging. It's time. Hoping to score a used 20 ft ladder. Might save the lagging for the heat of the summer, and try to get to 13' across before it gets too scorching.

@CleverNickname, call around to the pawn shops on 183.  I think there are maybe 3 within reasonable distance from you.

Also, have you considered maybe a metal cap for the hole?  Keep rain out (I don't know what your current cover is like)... & what are you doing for overall "attractive nuisance" issues re: kids?

Not really. Well, I did find a used 21' ladder so that should hold for a while. I gotta build a 10x20 shed roof at la Casita. This weekend looks to be soggy, so I'm not sure if I will get up there. Did Big Bend / McDonald star party / Balmorhea for Spring Break.

You DO know I have plenty of metal roof panels that would prob. fit your needs.  No charge, you come & get (78620).

How close is that to balanced rock?

Probably about 8 miles west toward Terlingua. You park on a little pullout next to a bridge over a wash and just follow the drainage. It's in the Parent hiking guide, but not on the park website. I think you could also come at it from Croton Springs, but you'd probably want a map and GPS for that. It's open desert, but damn some other Big Bend hikes can get crowded and sometimes a man just needs to stop and piss.

been a long while, but other ranch projects are finishing up. Except the 6 yards of of 3/4 I've been spreading in ruts.

finally started to timber the walls on the 2nd level (4-8 ft). Got a piece of lumber in all the corners, and completed one side. Put the next set of emergency ladder. Got me new (to me) taller ladder in.

• What are the dimensions of the hole, L × W?
• How deep?
• Temperature @ deprh vs. current topside?
• How long does it take to get from top to bottom?
• What tools are you using @ the bottom?
• Do you leave tools @ the bottom or bring them all up every time?
• How do you secure the opening to prevent an attractive nuisance?
• Do you wish you had made the opening larger, i.e. 6×8 to start & maybe wishing you had gone 8×8 instead for a bit more turnaround room or space for a 2nd person?
• What's Mrs. Clever think of all this?
● Do you ever anticipate going horizontal?
•• If so, how far?
••What direction?  Away from the house?   180⁰ from the house?   90⁰?  • Maybe as an antechamber & how large?
••Standing height?

• Pic from the bottom?

• Inside is 30"x48" made of 4x6s and 2x walls

• currently about 11.5'

• it is a little bit cooler/warmer or at least the air isn't

• it takes a little bit to carefully climb ladder. I haul up buckets with a pully

• I used an electric jackhammer if it's. shelf of rock. Otherwise a 48" bully digger, rock hammer, and chisel. I have a metal dog food scoop that is good for loose stuff. A hand garden fork is good for scraping walls. A couple of padded gardening kneeleres are nice. I have a 36" crowbar which is good in tight space. Two small shivers, one a round and the other a transfer shovel.

• jack hammer comes out. Usually I leave the other stuff.

• Sometimes a big piece of 3/4 ply covers it (atop some extra 4x4 pieces. I roll screen mesh over to try and keep bugs and frogs out. It's about a quarter mile from the road, and it was a wet May, so O let it air out this past couple of months.

• Any larger and I'd need to divide the compartment in half or use 6x6s as the main framing.

• Mrs doesn't mind. I come back happier amd less stressed.

• I want to do at least 4 sets if 4' sections, maybe 5. I figure go down to 20 or 22 and then think about going sideways. I'd like to get deep enough and from there frame up amd pour concrete in lifts, building from the bottom up. I could remove sections. The wood is pressure treated, but it wont last forever. Maybe I'll even source basalt rebar. You need 2.5x tunnel height in overburden. So a 4' tunnel would need 10' (14 total), 5' = 17.5, and 6' = 21'. Six ft is probably overkill, but might be nice to have the option. Amd of course when I go sideways... mine cart tracks!

• I'd go out the 48" side away from the road. Pretty much the only way to go. But I could put another hole after a ways!

Are you starting to feel the heat from the earths core yet? If you put your ear to the ground, can you hear the Chinese people talking on the other side?

Starting to approach claustrophobia levels for me. I would like for you to start up a 10:1 ratio of depth to width please sir.

No way I would climb down that ladder into that hole.  No way at all.

I love your hole. Shit wait, I love seeing pictures of your hole. No, dammit, you have dug a pretty cool hole. Impressive hole. Goddammit, nevermind.

This is a safe space - you can go ahead & say it: "I want to touch your hole".

New to the thread. Why is the hole being dug? Did anyone ask it? Maybe it does not want to be a hole. And if you are digging a hole, does the dirt/rock extracted become a hill?

So many damn questions. Guess off to page 1

Welcome.  You will never want to leave.
