I've decided to dig a hole

I think I'm officially dug deep enough for the next set install. I'm 13' deep, a good 5' below the second set. Hopefully putting some new wood in the next month.

some recent material purchases:

$60 for 1.5x1.5 slotted angle iron (3× 5')

$10 for 10 square washers

$10 for 10 nylon steel 5/8 nuts

$100 for 4x5' 5/8 threaded rod

I want to buy the 4x6s for the fourth set this week, so I can make sure the holes line up.

I fucking forgot about this thread for like a year. Holy shit YES that it is still going on.

Same - that's why I finally made a post here, so I don't have to catch up on 14 months of digging and I get notifications of new hole stuff going down (NTTAWWT)

What does this mean (to you, not @CleverNickname).  I'm certain there are plenty of Shaggers who hope this doesn't ever end & is even passed down to generations of Mini-Clevers.

Yeah,, I'm with ROFL on this.  I'm viewing this like I view my car project.  Nothing is ever really "finished"...there's always more that can be done... :)

The 5' threaded rod I ordered wasn't going to make it in time for this weekend... so I spent another $280 on 4x6' rod, 3/4 galv pipe (internal ladder component), and slotted angle iron (for the fourth set, 12 to 16' deep). My wife is pissed. But the hole beckons.

This hole needs a name.

I am leading off with:

■  "CleverHole".

■  "Shag²Hole"

■  Asshole

We have 7 days, midnight of Saturday 02 Nov 24 to come up with something that is 51% appropriate for the hole & 49% relevant to this BBS.

Do work.

Additionally, it has for many years now been my assertion that all humans need an artistic expression.

Some might daydream or chatvwithbdruends about how they envision building their dream hot rod or muscle car, from the tires / wheel combo to the engine, color, interior, etc.

Others may paint, engage in photography, play a musical instrument, research, assemble & wear uniforms for historical re-enactment, build a deck or maybe a tree house "for the kids", etc.

The named ___________ -hole is this man's expression, albeit with a bit of simplicity when it started & with a few evolutions as it progressed.

Now we have him talking about the minerals, global geolical intersections (what's on the exact opposite side of the Earth?), gasses, structural engineering, bunker provisions & missile siloing¹... the topics are expansive.

It is definitely a Man's expression on display for us to discuss & ivam 100% certain all whobare following thisbthread would like to visit & "Get to to the bottom of this (hole)."  You WANT to touch his hole.

Also, the rock / sand screeding is very ASMR quality.

¹If we haven't, we should.

Don’t think this has been asked very recently if at all, but if you were to start all over from the beginning, what would you have done differently? Bought different tools from the beginning? Made the hole wider? Framed up rebar behind the walls to eventually pour concrete?

Also, you found an electric winch for pulling up buckets yet? I feel like that would’ve been one of my first purchases.

I would have made a better and thicker concrete pad around the hole. The start was slapdash. A better concrete collar would also help keep out water in heavy rains. But my plan is now to get down to ~20' and then basically do concrete with rebar in lifts. From the bottom up. I probably should also do a French drain around the canopy. I should have done the smaller demo hammer from the start. It is way better than the heavier jackhammer.

As for an electric hoist: definitely on the 2024 Christmas list. I just don't want one that is too slow. Lately I've put in temp 2x8s across the sets, and just lift the buckets in 4' increments. I think it's easier on my hands, but harder on my back.

Do you have any idea how deep the water table is where you are digging?  Seems like your hole could likely turn out to be a well.

My guess is @ least +150 feet.  I think it was discussed up-thread.

Have you thought that maybe you'll encounter a cavern? Doesn't have to be too deep. My parents sank a well and they came across a number of voids before hitting the water table. Don't fall through the ceiling of one :).

never dig straight down
