Honestly, if it isn't named Spinal Tap 11, then they have failed.

After relaunching its film division last October, Castle Rock Entertainment has set a first project out of the gate that will have a familiar ring. It’s Spinal Tap II, a sequel to the fabled rock mockumentary that set the film company on a run of hits, many of them directed by Rob Reiner. He made his directorial debut on the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.

Reiner will direct the sequel and return as filmmaker Marty DiBergi. Also back are David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), the nucleus of England’s loudest and sauciest heavy metal band.

The package comes after the Cannes Film Festival announced the original will screen on the beach as part of the Cinema de la Plage sidebar on Wednesday, May 18th. The film was released to critical acclaim in 1984. In 2002, it was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

I can’t wait. Wonder what the drummer body count will be by now.

We will find out David St. Hubbins has a younger brother and he will be played by Bob Odenkirk.

Super Troopers 2 was about as close to good as a sequel to an iconic comedy has ever come, IMO. This one is going to be tough to pull off because, among other things, they are all old af. But hell so are the Stones. I hope it’s good but my money is on bad.

In like a motherfucker on this.

Those of you worrying about it sound like a bunch of Artie Fufkins and you need your ass kicked, okay? Guest, McKean, Shearer and Reiner know what the fuck they're doing. As Reiner said in the linked interview, people have been asking them for decades to make a sequel but they declined because they weren't going to do it just to do it.

I wonder if Nigel has been working as a salesman in a haberdasher or a chapeau shop or something all these years?

I am cautious with this.  Spinal Tap is an all time classic.  Doing a sequel rarely lives up to the original.  I bet it has a ton of cameos.

Yeah, it will probably be a big letdown. Don’t mess with perfection.

Can’t anyone come up with new ideas anymore?

This wont be a remake. I can see it being about a reunion tour, trying, unsuccessfully, to relive the glory years. There is a lot of real life material with which to draw from.

It’s about the 40th anniversary of the doc. Ian has passed but his wife finds an old contract holding Tap to a concert. The movie is then about them putting the band together when they hate each other and don’t communicate. According to Marty DiBergi.

In other words, most any rock band "reunion" tour.  Plenty of material for a second Tap movie.

This.

There is AMPLE material for them to make fun of, re: aging rock bands.  My guess is this is going to be great.

I’ve been trying to figure that out on piano forever.

It's hard because it's simple lines intertwining. It's really influenced by Mozart and Bach. It's sort of in between those, really, it's like a Mach piece.

Shearer and Guest are fucking loaded, and McKean, by far the poorest of the 3, is worth 12 million.

Meathead is worth 200 million.

They don't need the dough.

Agreed. I hope they're not doing it just because they need the money.  I'm hoping the script is really good.

Expand

Isn’t the script in Christopher Guest movies a series of scene set ups or a few key jokes and the actors improv for a bunch of takes?

I don't see this being as fun because it will probably be a Las Vegas residency...although an argument about a residency v tour would be a funny scene.

Of course they do. You don't build up retirement money opening for puppet shows at Sea World.

I hope they actually tour again as Spinal Tap. God that was a fun fucking show.

man that would be great but if they really want to send it off right, they'd do one final show at the O2 as a tribute to Ron Halpern, with Mick Shrimpton's son on drums.
