Haven’t checked in on this thread in awhile.  Damn, my boat has been laid up for months with an exhaust issue.  Mechanic promises next week.  I’ve hardly boated in the last few years.  I mean I’ve been to the boat a lot, but trips have been hard to come by.  I really want to change that next year.  Otherwise what am I doing with this thing other than piss money into it?

I feel your pain right now. Just got really bad news and now it looks like I need to replace one engine. To do that is a major job - they have to cut into the decking in the salon and basically remove the back window/wall too. The cost of doing that makes it to where I might as well replace both engines while I’m at it. Going to lose about 2 months of the fishing season too. Fuck.

It’s a little unclear what caused the initial problem. I figured I’d get at least 5 more years out of the current engines. Some combination of bad luck, mechanic error changing the cooling pump a few months ago and not changing the oil when he did it, and someone running the boat and not noticing the oil pressure dropping. So here we are with metal (n the port engine.

That freaking sucks. If you end up back home and want to fish, lmk. We are very hands on and by no means professional.

Thanks man. We definitely should go grab a beer sometime.

Damn hookit that’s rough. Your survey didn’t mention any engine issues I guess?

Clean survey including oil samples. But this really had nothing to do with the engine. It was a mistake made by somebody. We will not be using the same mechanic again and I’ve demoted the captain that was running the boat back down to first mate. No way to tell for sure who was at fault and it was likely a combination of both. I also share some of the blame for promoting a guy to captain who really wasn’t quite ready for the job. Tough and very expensive lesson to learn.

Ouch...

I don't know if modern pleasure craft can, "keel haul" someone like back in the day but I would be tempted to try and find out.

Merry Xmas to me. One old engine was removed yesterday. The other engine should be out by end of day. Mechanic is taking tomorrow off then installing the new engines that are sitting in a box in the boatyard ready to go. After that it’s just a matter of hooking everything back up and then reinstalling the deck and back window that was cut out. That project starts on the 2nd and should take 3 weeks.

That’s like being in the OR watching surgery being performed on a loved one.

Yes and thankfully I am in Texas right now and not there to see it in person. I’ll go down a few days before they finish and the boat should look as good as it ever did by then. Actually better looking because while we have it in the yard we are doing some paint touch up work and installing an a/c unit for the cockpit.

Is that less expensive to have done down there in CR vs here?

It’s probably a wash. Mechanic price is the same, boatyard labor is cheaper but we had to pay a small fortune in shipping and taxes ro get the engines down to CR.
