Ok, leaving out of New York July 4th. One night stop over in the Azores, then doing the Santiago De Compostela Lisbon route for 12 days. Has anyone ever done this and any recommendations would be appreciated.

Beware bandits bearing scimitars.

Warning: my information is from the 11th century, things may have changed.

I almost signed up for a trip this year, but decided on Egypt instead.  This is absolutely on my list though.  Subscribed.

Fwiw, my Portuguese language instructor just put out a travel guide for Portugal ("Destination Portugal"). From looking at the table of contents there's more language and customs lessons, specifically geared toward tourism, and a little bit of specifics on places to go, but it's supposedly geared for you to "experience Portugal like a local."  https://school.learn-portuguese.org/courses  though she does include suggested, separate, 7-day itineraries for the north, central and south of Portugal, as well as detailed recommendations for Porto (where she lives) and the best places to visit in Portugal near the ocean or rivers.

Also in Porto consider both restaurants Cervejaria Gazela and Esplanada Maisqueira Antiga. https://eatlikebourdain.com/anthony-bourdain-in-porto/

2 other resources: Time Out, and https://expatsportugal.com/community/

Lisbon is one of the great cities of the world. There are large terraces on the tops of the various hills where you can grab a spritzer or beer, a sun chair, and just people watch and take in the gorgeous views. I'm jealous.

Yep.  Loved Lisbon. Need to get over my hatred of flying coach, because you can get cheap flights on the regular out of NYC, and I could totally do some long weekends there.

I have so many responses to this I’ll choose the pleasant one.

If you want something bad enough you will make appropriate concessions.

Been once before but I was there for a festival and to party. I can’t think of one thing I did there.

Azores were dope. Missed my flight so spend a little extra time here which was great because I rented a car and drove around a bit.

Definitely a hidden gem, little to no tourists, extremely cheap, great seafood.

I will definitely come back but now on to Porto. Skipping Lisbon for after the hike.

Word is there are more 1000-pound blue marlin in the Azores than anywhere else on the planet.  Of course, the islands are nice too.

I went after some blacks in Panama at Tropic star. 1000lbs is massive for a blue.

I got to see the Azores, or at least the airfield where US transports land. We milled about outside the plane as we were meant to do. The only Azorean person I saw was a cop in a golf cart. She looked kind of like the cop version of Nelly Furtado.

After our plane left, another one full of the next 3rd of our unit landed. Their Lieutenant was a real Strac Trooper and called all his milling-about troops into formation, for some dumb fucking Army control freak reason. The Azorean cops descended upon him and packed him off to jail. There is an old treaty dating back to maybe when Britain fought Napoleon, that the Azores would be neutral. Officer Rambo was charged with "forming troops for battle," as if he was going to order a bayonet charge on a golf cart.

Well, to be fair...Lajes is the airport on Terceira.  It was a USAF base for a long time.  It's actually where my parents met.  They were teachers at the DoD school there.

Finally got a chance to go there back in 2016 with my Dad.  It. Was. Awesome.  I'd love to go back.

Nice dude, Terceira was fantastic. Exactly like Ireland with no people and 1/5th the cost. I mean seriously would just drive around and nothing but locals and farmland. Great seafood and friendly people. Bom Dia was said about 50000 times.

Yeah...it was so great.  We were driving on a road and got caught behind some guy leading his cows to the dairy...

We had to drive at the speed of cow.

lisbon is a tourist butthole

heading to Sagres to surf for a week

So did the walk suck and not enjoyable? It has always been on my bucket list but I was expecting an enjoyable walk and not excruciating endeavor
