Miami yacht advice

Friend is doing a 40th bday in Miami Beach and renting a yacht. Has 20 people coming but said rules in Miami state max occupancy of 13 for the boat. Despite these boats looking plenty big for 20 people. So now he's debating renting 2 which sounds stupid to me unless the second is filled with strippers to meet the 13 person quota.

Anyone do this? Are these rules hard to circumvent or can we slip the skipper some cash to look the other way?

Sounds like the rules are different there than Texas but no you’re probably not going to be able to bribe a captain. That’s some serious shit if they get caught. How big is the boat?

That ain’t a yacht, it’s a boat. The skipper not only won’t risk his license to accommodate your friend’s dumbass request to take on 20 folks illegally, he might just cancel the charter. He needs a bigger boat, or has to tell some friends they have to stay home.

lol at the responses. So I am not a boat person and I'm just along for the ride. Just relaying what he told me. Don't want to sound like a dick and call him out. Maybe he's being cheap but then why the hell consider renting 2, unless 2 are cheaper than one big boat. But 2 boats sounds dumb if you want to hang with all of your friends.

So this is the link he sent. Looks more like a catamaran?

totally different th, that was a kick ass jet boat that uncle Roman rented.

Yea, "Suck My Wake" is not to be confused with a pontoon boat trying to be played off as a yacht.

I mean, not even Chet called the pontoon boat he wanted to rent a "yacht".

BTW, this thread absolutely delivers.

When I clicked, I thought it would be the least humble humblebrag ever.  This is WAY better.

i was watching a porn video the other day and it started with 3 whores driving to a marina in miami and filming themselves just shooting the shit...they park and start walking to the boat ramp and see the boat and one of them goes 'are you fucking kidding me? it's so small'...then proceeds to hop onto what basically looks like a boat for wakeboarding and gets railed in the bay while her friends watch.

i'm guessing the 'director' oversold the size of the boat quite a bit. probably even called it a yacht.

Yeah initially when he said he was getting a yacht I thought "damn, for us to stay on all weekend? He must be doing well."

Now it's apparently a pontoon boat for 4 hrs and perhaps a life preserver to ferry guests between 2 boats

My deck boat has legal capacity for 12 people.  Any larger and it's classified as a yacht which doesn't have a "set" number of passengers allowed.  However, I'm quite sure if the Coast Guard or TP&W came up, they get to use "discretion" in deciding if there's too many people on it - beyond just the number of life vests/cushions.

When it’s for hire there are set numbers I think

I wouldn’t go on it if the captain cheats. Huge issues if got busted or something went wrong

Doesn't sound right.  Are you talking about chartering for overnight or just booze-cruising?  There are literally dozens of large party boats (Hornblower Cruises is the main one) out here that do weddings, corporate events, etc. with 50+ people.

Oh hell no.  I wouldn't either.  Because I have this strange urge to not die at sea, I guess...

I've got a buddy that has a 42' that he uses for charters though.  He's not stupid enough to break rules and lose his captain's license.

It all depends on the type of boat you plan to rent in Miami. Typically, most yachts can accommodate up to 13 people, but there are options for up to 20 people. However, these are not exactly yachts but rather catamarans, pontoon boats, or small ships.

My limited experience is/was to ask someone that does this regularly (e.g. concierge from a nice hotel) and tell them what you want.

"I want a boat that will comfortably hold __ people for 8 hours, with liquor, snacks and music, and we want to go up and down the Miami River looking at hoochies, and then drop us off at Kiki on the River at __p.m."

That person is going to say "your best option is ____, or you could go bigger with ____, but I wouldn't recommend ____."

Then tip the concierge.

13 is a charter rule and they enforce that shit in miami.  If the owner is on boat you can do more.  But if they board the boat nobody better slip up and say it’s a charter.

Have options I trust and have used if anyone ever needs one down there.
