Right. If you want the people of Texas to take you seriously, you should say thoughtful, productive things like “Thoughts and prayers” and “School librarians are pornographers” and “It could have been worse.”

Sounds like the same kinda stuff Islamists say halfway across the world.

Hmm maybe there is something in between?

Anyone from San Antonio picks up on this after spending a day in Austin.

Texas democrats, to be successful, need to be home-grown, and cognizant of their “base.” Importing NY sensibilities won’t do it. It’s why I’ve commented that a shitload of people don’t realize that in Texas, a shitload of dem voters also own and are quite proficient with firearms (so all the GQP posturing about “yeah, when the civil war happens, we’ll kick your asses” is…not well thought-out. We’ll shoot the fuck back, and we’re not posers, we’re actually lifelong experienced shooters who will calmly drop gravy seals one by one). Kyrie? Pescado? Bozo? Me? All pretty reliable Dem voters these days. And all of us are armed and skilled. But to be clear, all of us aren’t just ok with, but support and vote for better gun regulation.

If you want better gun regulation, you need guys like us on your team. And for our part, if we want a society where we can continue to responsibly own and use our firearms, we need to get better gun regulations.
And to do that….we need to completely destroy the modern GQP, which is the most dangerous anti-democratic force this country has ever faced.

I am asking you to read what I’m writing here sincerely, and seriously: you are wrong.
Let’s think of some things that have been “claimed” by conservatism: owning a gun, having border enforcement, and oil and gas extraction.
For DECADES - not just today, and not to “ingratiate themselves with their radicalized boot locker friends” - S Texas democrats have owned and used firearms, worked with and in Border Patrol, and been heavily entwined with the oil patch. Add ranching to that list. And driving pickups. And other stereotypes that you might think of…..and you just described my family, since post-WWII and actually a good bit before.
There are a whole lot of common sense, moderately “conservative” values that have long had a home with dem voters. As we’ve become polarized, it’s been hard to place those values - even the good, healthy ones, that most all Dems agree with (eg, 95% of Dems actually do think we need a border and a border patrol) - with Dems. Why? Because they’ve been claimed and perverted by the GQP. For example, Border Patrol has become a happily fascist and cruel organization, disseminating insane thoughts and in some cases operating as a private fascist force for the POTUS.

Writing off huge swaths of Texas, particularly S Texas, as you’re doing right now, is one of the stupidest things Texas Dems have done and continue to do. We should stop that.

I’m going to have to sort of disagree with you on this one, Peter.

Have Democrats done a shitty job in Texas? Sure. You can pretty much claim that in most states. They don’t play for keeps. Have Democrats taken Hispanic votes for granted? Probably. But you kind of assume that considering the other party wants to ban Mexicans from the country. Now, just because South Texan Hispanics also want Trumps border wall, doesn’t make them right

You have been arguing rightly on every thread that anyone who still votes Republican these days, for the most, is a piece of shit. Now, you want to argue it’s the local politicians fault for not embracing Hispanic values of gun ownership, law and order, and conservatism. You can’t have it both ways. Just because the past Hispanic Democrat voter leans more MAGA these days, doesn’t mean their exempt from shame and derision. Beto isn’t a NY politician bringing his out of touch NY politics to South Texas. No one is writing off huge swaths of South Texas. They are running on the same principles of gun control, womens rights.

And living in rural Texas exposes one to the equally toxic conservative inferiority complex.

So long as you understand that both are true, we MIGHT have a chance of getting somewhere.

Who am I kidding, it only gets worse and there is no bottom. We’re not far away from a social requirement that you shoot up a place to prove your MAGA bona fides.

I'll say it again...the cops fucking up was the best thing that could have happened for the GOP. ALL focus is on their response, not the GOP policies that continue to allow this to happen.

Look at the front page of the DMN.

Agreed.  Bottom line is that Hispanics in south Texas need to increase their gun purchases and their SWAT style intensity.

The day after the shooting, a Uvalde mom was talking about how teachers need to be armed when teaching.

Why not?  Ted is fighting to keep felons and criminals from getting guns.  The fact that bad guys and criminals don't care about laws keeping guns out of their hands has apparently never occurred to him.

Just when I thought I reached maximum rage, Cruz comes through with another dumbass ‘idea’ to show me I can in fact get much much more ragey. This fool is going on about no guns for criminals, felons, or people who are severely mentally ill —too fucking dumb to realize the Uvalde gunman seemed to have no history of a criminal record or mental health illness . His fucking response doesn’t even apply to the current horrific situation .

Not going to disagree with this take, either - there’s plenty of truth in it. And to be clear, plenty of S Texas Hispanics can be utter pieces of shit, which makes them a perfect MAGA fit. It’s dumb, because in MAGA dream world, the rulers would immediately question their loyalty to this country, but dumb is our thing in this country.

What I’m suggesting is that we foolishly let the MAGAs take full ownership of things that include relatively centrist positions (eg, having an actual border is ok, and we should take reasonable steps to control it). Note that Dems actually DO believe those things, they’ve just lost control of the narrative. AND, they don’t connect with (and take for granted) large swaths of what should be good voters for them.

Imagine a texas Dem party that stands up for the working class, supports local public education, supports a sane and reasonable border policy that both protects our borders and ENHANCES the historical relationship with Mexico that is woven into our culture and families and helps drive our incredible economy (work with Mexico as a partner, not as an enemy), supports the right to own firearms with - like so many other rights - reasonable regulation so that responsible people are free to have and use guns and everyone is safer, etc. We had a party like that once. Most RGV Hispanics voted for it. That party today has totally lost the narrative.

If I was a dem running for office down there, I’d run a simple ad showing me in the field with my shotgun, then locking it in my gun safe at the end of the day. Then getting into my truck - with my license and insurance. Because real Texans are responsible, and care about their fellow Texans. I’d run an ad showing images of the border back when it functioned - back when it was easier to cross back and forth, passage was monitored, and the region prospered from the trade. I only want what texas had for a long time and can have again - a safe and secure border, with trade and crossings that benefit all of us. Shit like that.

I mean, I would lose, because I’m convinced 99% of Texans are irreversibly stupid, but still.

I think he's saying these things to motivate those Texans who don't vote.   He's not going to win by being a fence sitter.  The idea of doing away with those weapons in Texas is not ludicrous, it makes sense.  He's telling people he's different and has the guts to speak up for them, so get off their asses and go vote for him.

For years all we hear is 'they are all the same, either side, why vote?'  Those people thinking that aren't as studied in this as most of us are.  They need something short and sweet to grab their attention.  Playing it safe to win isn't going to do it.  Win or lose, he is right.

So yeah he could lay out some really good plan to fix just about everything, but no one would listen.  At least not the ones he needs to persuade.  That takes too long.

I love both cities but that's more a case of an SA inferiority complex than an Austin superiority complex in much the same way Houston is to Dallas. One city bristles at the mention of another, the other one doesn't really realize they're engaged in a rivalry. Occasionally semi-entertaining.

Right, because the Houston/Dallas rivalry is all in Houston's head and Dallas never, ever mentions it.  What a crock of shit.

I spent my entire childhood in Houston.  I never heard anyone say anything about A rivalry between Dallas and Houston until I went off to UT and met some guys from Dallas.  It was very strange.  Kinda like when I got my first job and a group of aggys said something to me about being a “tea sipper” on my first day.  I had no fucking clue what whey were talking about.
