Just FYI state licenses can be used by someone residing outside the state.  I’m licensed in TX and have been for 25 plus years, and am licensed in CA too.

In most cases, reasonably easy for a seasoned lawyer to gain admission to another state's bar.  Also true of PE licenses?  I might think easier in most cases.

That sounds very reasonable (expensive, I know) for a reputable attorney.

If 350USD it's reasonable, if 350CAD, it's cheap.

Canadian lawyers, by and large, don't get the rates US lawyers do.

Wait…they really shut that down? Because I know of a lot of folks pursuing Italian citizenship.

Not true in California, I had to take additional examinations in surveying (reasonably easy) and seismic principles and design (not easy).  But there is generally comity between state licensing boards otherwise.

Yup. Sucks. We were done with the US government part, which took over a year. We were about to hire an Italian immigration lawyer to finish off the next part. Hoping that in the coming years things change, but for now, it’s fight to the death here.

In normal times, I’d recommend Canada as a safe and easy choice, but right now, I’d start looking at options across the Pond due to the whole 51st state thing.

didn't you talk to a Canadian immigration attorney recently or was that someone else? i don't remember if there was any follow up...

you know, for decades one side or the other has always claimed 'im leaving!' when the other side won... this is the first time i've ever seen people actually do it/ seriously put plans in place. we personally know four families pulling the trigger. that's... really something 😳

ETA didn't realize which thread this was... but ^that's just leaving the country... the leaving/left Texas numbers are even higher, probably 75% of our social group (so far).

Well, we’ve upgraded our plans from lightly pursuing an out-of-state move to a serious pursuit of AU/NZ residence. I had a pretty pessimistic view of how this would all shake out, but it has somehow managed to outpace my own morbid imagination. I imagine our family is only a few rungs up on the scapegoat ladder from where we’re at now, and I don’t intend to wait around and find out if we can help it. It will probably take at least a year to get the visa we will need, so no time like the present.

I did speak with an immigration attorney. It's great for immigrating to Canada that I'm a nurse, but it's unacceptable that I'm almost 40, so in order to guarantee (or to even have a good shot) myself entry "the right way" I will either have to become extremely fluent in French very quickly (I have a rating of 14 on Duolingo! 🫠) or gain acceptance and graduate from a Canadian school, whereupon I will have a 3 year work visa and can get residency after proving myself valuable.

So I'm applying to a bunch of international schools this year, and trying to make connections and speak with lawyers from countries where I may end up having to flee. Hopefully the citizen pogroms take a long time to really get going and I'll just be able to head off to school and never look back.

Really dumb question - but how are you sourcing attorneys? Outside of going by google ratings, I’m not sure what else to do.

Googling mostly. Trawling through their website just to get a vibe of the firm. I can link you to the people I spoke with if you'd like. They struck me as legit, and while it was a lot of money to me, the $450 I spent was worth it, I'd say.

I was married to a woman that wanted horses, and I spent a fucking fortune on horses trying to keep her happy (it didn't work).

Anyway, we had this vet...really nice guy who had 30 years experience.  He went to vet school in Kentucky, and practiced there for many years.  One day his biggest client approached him and told him that they were moving their entire operation to So. Cal, and wanted him to come with them.  They stuck a deal where they guaranteed him a certain income until he could build his practice up with other clients.

So, after having an equine-only practice for 20 years, he's up until 3 AM every night studying hamsters and shit so he can pass the CA license exam.

Good, that shit pissed me off because I knew people getting that shit because their 4x great grandfather came from Italy even though they have like 5% Italian blood, whereas I was denied because my dad was born 1 month after my grandfather turned 18 and thus, at the time, automatically becoming a US citizen.  Never mind the fact that both 23andMe and Ancestry DNA tests showing I'm 75+% Italian.

Colorado too...rural mountain and desert plain maga abound. but >50% of the state lives in Denver metro-Ft. Collins corridor, thank god.

The mountains are a maga paradise, but you know there are a few sane people up there. You just have to search a bit. I can recall meeting some people there that definitely were not candidates for the cult. I think that one good idea is to buy a small plot of land up there just as a possible refuge in case you need it. I know land prices are much higher now, but look around and at least see what is available. Some land backs right up into BLM lands so it gives you more room to roam or places to be at in case the entirety of diet breaks down. Hopefully that last part does not come to pass.

The closer you are to a resort, the bluer the area in the mountains. You don't have to go far to get into MAGAland, though.

Gonna throw this out there in case anyone is interested. Although I live in LA, I have some family in the Bay Area and find myself looking at housing in the region from time to time just to see what the market is like for future reference, should we decided to move up there once the kids are out of the house.

I see a lot of "well California is off the table due to housing costs," which I totally understand.

And yet, I continuously see home prices in Berkeley that defy explanation. I get that Berkeley is not for everyone, but I've always enjoyed it up there. Here's just a few homes that are currently on the market. Honestly, compared to prices in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, it doesn't seem THAT expensive. Obviously the PPSF is much higher. So perhaps, coming from Texas, it does seem exorbitant to pay over $1m for something under 2000 sqft. But man, these are some solid homes with beautiful views of the bay and the city. My wife claims that its because Berkeley is a bit out of the way from the Tech hubs, so it removes those folks from the market. Not sure if there's something to that. Maybe @We’reTexas can offer an explanation?

Looks like those are all listings in nice neighborhoods - sellers are shooting for around $1k per square foot these days. Which, to be fair, is a depressed price for the Bay due to lack of BART access and impossible commute to the Peninsula (also, the Berkeley Hills are in a high risk fire zone and going through the same insurance issues yall have unfortunately experienced).

Some peak surly shit framing houses over $1M as being reasonable options

Yeah, I get it. But I see people on this thread who are already living in neighborhoods with home prices at or near $1m, who believe that CA is an unattainable market. Just trying to pass along some info to those who might find it helpful. Which is coincidentally, also peak surly shit.

And I didn’t mean it with hostility, on a pure hard purchase price it has validity considering some areas of the state.

I spend a good chunk of my life ranting about the unreasonableness of every aspect of California housing, but on a board of relatively affluent college graduates I will agree that it’s actually quite attainable. You will probably not get 3,000 square feet, but that’s a Texan mindset issue. You eventually get over it because you spend all your time outside!

Speaking of dual citizenship options, I recently learned that my brother was able to apply for and get approved Romanian/EU citizenship because our great grandparents on Mom's side were from there. He said it cost about $2500 for the lawyer to do the paperwork and he expects to have an EU passport in a month or so.  Apparently Romania has the easiest path to dual citizenship in the EU because you can use ancestry, and it's not a very strict process as other countries. If anyone else has that lineage, it's worth looking into it if you want an EU option.

As a Texan I am really jealous at how low those property taxes are.

$6,500 a year on a 1.5 million dollar house? What?
