AUSTIN — Tom Herman has looked far and wide for an elite pass-catcher since his arrival on the 40 Acres. He might have found him in Scottsdale, AZ….

Junior 4-star wide receiver Jake Smith verbally committed to Texas today. He joins fellow Arizona native Brayden Liebrock in the #fUTure19. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound wideout from Notre Dame Preparatory chose the Longhorns over USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame among his 30+ offers.

When he took an unofficial visit to the state capitol during the spring, him and his father had a good idea where’d he would be playing his college football. Getting to hang with Jordan and Jaxon Shipley on the trip was sheer brilliance from the UT staff.

Smith is an exceptional athlete – 4.37 (40) and 34′ vertical – who also excels at Lacrosse.

Excerpt from the Recruiting Notebook (Ian Boyd): Smith has unreal acceleration, he reminds of Christian McCaffrey except he’s a bit taller and leaner and projects to WR for Texas. He ran and received for 1k yards last season and is both a blur in space and also capable of snagging throws down the field. He’s probably an H-back at Texas but may also fit outside at the Z. Texas would probably want to feature him and get him the ball regularly but he also may grow into a traditional outside receiver and stay there. – IB

Take a look at highlights from Smith.

Smith is the ninth member of Texas 2019 class joining Jared Wiley (Temple), Tyler Johnson (Conroe Oak Ridge), Brayden Liebrock (Chandler – AZ), Kenyatta Watson II (Grayson – GA), De’Gabriel Floyd (Westlake – CA), Jordan Whittington (Cuero), T’Vondre Sweat (Huntsville), and Roschon Johnson (Port Neches-Groves).

Just looking at his film there’s no doubt that he’s going to be an impact player. Texas finally has a couple of WR’s with the ability to be electric not  just on offense but also punt/kick return.

This is awesome.  Gonna love it when he gets here and then bitch when he's not playing over Jordan Pouncy. Then he'll play and I'm gonna be mad that some 2021 kid isn't in there beating him out.  Such is the circle of over valuing recruits over the guys actually there.

Man i hope we stay in Arizona this year and next.  With the uncertainty with the state schools we should be able to cherry pick some really good players.
