2019 WR Jake Smith

Recommended Posts

Jake Smith is the kind of player, health permitting, that you can win a NC with.

This guy is a freaking football missing link - the missing link to change a mediocre offense to a devastating offense.

I'm a little stressed that our man has broken his tibia, and his arm, in the past, so let's hope he keeps to health.

Jake Smith is a guy genuinely to become excited about. And I am, lol.

Why the fuck is Boyd saying he projects to an H-Back?

Apparently the slot is called the H-back in Herman's offense. Or something like that.

Edit: from Boyd a few weeks ago:

For this school of offense the H-back is a hybrid matchup hunter that is like a flex RB although they often use guys that are stronger on the receiving end than the running end.

Looks like that'll be Lil'Jordan Humphrey this year. Demarcus Ayers played the role in Houston, the 2015 Cougars were basically making teams choose whether they were going to try and load up to stop Greg Ward Jr or Ayers.

Watching his HUDL video again, it's hard to imagine  why he's not a 5-star recruit.

I said the same thing after watching JK Dobbins HUDL a couple seasons back. He should have been a 5 Star, and Jake probably should too.

Doesn’t seem like a real step down from Wilson, when you factor in the multiple roles he can take on. Great work by the staff.

I don't think it's a step down because it's a different role that Smith is going to play. He is part of plan A which was something like Whittington, Wilson, Smith and Wright

How old is he for his grade?

With a kid this fast, it's hard to say, exactly. Time does weird stuff as you approach the speed of light, so he might be younger now than when you asked this question.

loss of Garrett Wilson still hurts but Whittington + Jake and if we can get Dylan Wright...aint too shabby at all (knowingly left Higgins off for now)

After landing 2 fantastic slot receivers in Whittington and Smith, you add a big: Wright/Higgins and 1 or 2 outside guys: J.Ellis/L.Anderson/P.Powell.  And give M.Tongue a shot too if he wants to come.  Boom.  Profit.

Edit: Oh and stay on Marcus Washington all the way to signing day too.

Arizona kid. He's just outrunning a bunch of whites and mexicans in all his games. Makes his speed look other-worldly instead of just superhuman, which it is. Another big year statistically may get him to 5 stars, like it even matters. They do know how to grow their speed demon WR's in Arizona though, just look at Christian Kirk and Devon Allen in recent years. Allen wasn't much of a football player but Smith looks far better than he ever did already. Kirk is a better comparison right now.

Smith can obviously play so his ranking doesn't really matter but his best bet at becoming a 5 star would be to get "official" numbers at a place like the Opening and then have a big weekend there. It doesn't look like Smith ever competed at an Opening Regional, so he's not going to be able to do that. It does look like he'll be at the UA All American game, so that's his best shot at jumping in the rankings but that would probably be too late to get to 5 star.

He's currently #104 in the composite with ESPN having him at 84, RIvals at 104 and 247 at 178. 247 seems to have him way too low, and I'd expect they update that at some point, but him not going to any camps at all is probably deflating his ranking.

Texas Longhorns pick up ESPN 300 wide receiver Jake Smith - On The Trail- ESPN

by Tom Luginbill on 2018-06-27 11:00:00 UTC (original: http://www.espn.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/insider/post?id=81859)

ESPN 300 WR Jake Smith has selected Texas, becoming the sixth top 100 prospect currently committed to the Longhorns. Continue reading to see what he adds to Tom Herman's offense:

What he brings: This guy is just a football player. Smart, heady, competitive and deceptively fast. He's versatile and could play on the inside or outside and is an ideal fit as a return man. Smith is one of those kids who quarterbacks are drawn to because he is so reliable. He has terrific ball skills and makes plays in traffic. You know exactly what you are going to get with him, and it's going to be productive. His ability to develop as a route runner could make him even more dangerous in creating separation.

How he fits: Smith is joining a very experienced group of targets in Austin. Collin Johnson, Donovan Duvernay and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps, not to mention John Burt and Jerrod Heard, assuming all return for the 2019 season.

Reminds us of: Trey Quinn, SMU. Smith is so similar to Quinn when Quinn came out and originally signed with LSU. Just two savvy, smart players who know how to get open and have better speed for which they get credit.

How the class is shaping up: Texas is starting to pick up the pace, as Smith makes nine verbal commitments, six of which are in the ESPN 300. It also has cast a bit of a wider net into California, Georgia and Arizona. However, its top two highest-graded prospects are in-state commits OT Tyler Johnson and ATH Jordan Whittington. Much is expected of QB Roschon Johnson, who athletically fits Tom Herman's offense well

Lulz. They legitimately called him "deceptively fast" and compared him to a white slot receiver from SMU. Oh, and they think Reggie Hemphill-Mapps is still on the team. ESPN recruiting is doing their best to give Rivals a run for its money. Fortunately for ESPN, they just can't quite keep up with Rivals' incompetence.

They also named the wrong Duvernay brother.
