First time in Mexico?  It's common there.

i’ve been coming to Isla since the 1990s but I have never seen this many patrolling so frequently.   I was a guest of the Guatemalan government after their Civil War and we had a security group armed with the teeth that went with us everywhere as kidnap protection.    I get that.    I might be absolutely wrong, but it just appeared to me that the level of security had been amped up to the point. I constantly saw those guys. Or maybe they just are hanging out near North Beach for the Mexican cop equivalent of free donut shops.

Well that place is fucked

I have a better chance of marrying Ana de Armas at a 24 hour Vegas chapel with no pre-nup.

I looked on a couple of my mexico travel boards and IM hasn't approved any music fests for that time period.

Heading to Cancun for Spring Break with the family, and we are staying at a hotel next to the ferry that goes to IM. I'm thinking a day trip to the north side island beaches would be fun for my kids (7 & 9 yo girls). Any recs for beaches/restaurants/must-do's? Do we have to pay for beach usage, or just chair/cabana rentals? Any day clubs allow kids? Also, do we need a golf cart to get to the north side beach, or is it walkable from the ferry?

This would be our first time to the island, so I have zero expectations.

you don't have to pay for beach usage, but if you want chairs yes you will need to pay... usually whatever you pay goes towards your food/drink. you don't need a golf cart to walk from the ferry to playa norte... it's a few blocks. restaurants, anything in the main street Hidalgo

I like North Garden for breakfast (chilaquiles) and it's going to be near where you'll be for the beach. If you get a golf cart then Mango's is good, but it's been a couple years since we've eaten there so I can't verify if that's still the case.

north garden is awesome, but you will wait for a bit unless you get there super early

Timely thread as heading to Resort (Finest Playa Mujeres) next Friday for a few days with kids.  Not sure if we will get off the resort or not, but if we do would likely be to take Ferry to island for a few hours.  So sounds like there are options to just take ferry over, walk around, find food and beach chairs or also to rent a golf cart and drive around?   Do most places take cards or need to find an ATM?

Posted

I'd head to Hidalgo for lunch.  It's a short walk and the food is better, cheaper and with better service than the restaurants on the beach.  At least that has been my experience.

Please report back about Finest. We’re going to in July. I was also thinking about taking the ferry over to isla

Ended up not doing the Ferry this trip.  But Finest exceeded expectations.  Older kids might get bored but mine (6 and 8 ) were at a great age for kids area etc., so we were able to drop them off during the day and go over to the adults side pool for an hour or so and then at night have kid free dinners a couple of nights.  Food was pretty solid for an all inclusive, high quality liquor, etc.  No complaints.

I'm starting to look at Mexico for our summer trip. I have never been. This would be late July. Flying into Cancun, does anyone have any recommendations on where would be a good spot to set up for a week? 4 of us, kids are 15 and 12. I've heard everything from Playa del Carmen to Mujeres and I have no frame of reference. We could be flexible in terms of resort vs Airbnb but I definitely will be looking for a 2 bed/2 bath setup vs standard hotel rooms. Ideally we would be somewhere walkable or a short golf cart ride to both the beach and a town with some fun restaurants and shops. Appreciate any thoughts.

if you want an Airbnb, look at PDC, Cozumel or Tulum. The "nice" beach area of Cancun is literally all hotels. Isla Mujeres has some airbnbs, but most people do hotels there.

Just understand that it may be uncomfortably hot.  I've been once in the summer and it was brutal.  February and March are my preferred months for Isla.

Its pretty diverse there and there's hotels/resorts/experiences that run the gamut in both variety and price.

What do y'all like to do? Beach beach and sports? Beach pool and chill people watch? Outdoor adventures and exporation? Party or no party? History/culture tours or no? Just trying to get away get hammered and not have your kids around except for dinner?

I read low 90s and humid. It might not break 40 here until next weekend so that would be very welcome. We usually do our family vacations in summer and are pretty used to Florida, so I am assuming similar?

We like a pool, we like a beach, we like to eat out and go on adventures. I like to go on a walk or to go workout first thing in the morning. Wife likes to sit in the sun, I like to bounce around a little bit. Probably minimal day drinking, maybe a marg here or there and a nightcap back home before bed.

The biggest thing for us like I said is we are used to 2 bed/2 bath condos/villas/ house rentals. I've never looked at Mexico in part before because it always seems like all of the resorts are either hotel rooms or $1500/night presidential suites. I'm looking at like $3-400/night.

Well, you are completely wrong on the prices and availability of rooms. Also almost everything at that price point is going to be all inclusive, which you may not be pricing in. So if you aren't a heavy drinker all inclusive /resort probably doesn't make sense for you, since the main appeal for those is to drink your body weight in alcohol and be waited on hand and foot without worrying about the bill. Sounds like you will barely even be at the hotel and maybe your wife will enjoy relaxing.

I'd go the airbnb route and maybe splurge and get a private chef one of the nights for fun. The rest of the time you can just drive wherever you want, there's also day passes for beach clubs all over the place that are all inclusive if you wanna do that vibe one of the days. (You can hire a driver or rent a car, although the insurance is a bit wonky in MX so you have to put a 10% refundable down payment on the car if you dont buy their premium insurance)

Xcaret is a huge outdoor theme park with all kinds of incredible stuff. Good for 2 full days or 1 really long day.

Take the ferry to isla mujeres and bounce around a bit and then go back from playa del Carmen, then maybe do a day trip to the ruins. I'd skip tulum with the fam tbh. There is no shortage of stuff to do in the riviera Maya. Everything is cheap as fuck, and it's mostly safe if you aren't being a shithead.

For a family of 4 for a week in comfortable digs you should be able to do it for 4k including flights. You can cheap out and do it for 2500 and the sky is kinds the limit of what you can do, you can spend 10k it just won't really be worth it.

Just go to Isla and book at the Playa Arena.  It has beach front access to North Beach which is where you want to be.  It's a 5 minute walk (if even) Calle Miguel Hidalgo which has tons of restaurants and bars.  They have great food at the resort and you can get a room with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen/living room for $300 a night.

Thank you both, looking pretty closely at these options. I found a great looking 5* reviewed Airbnb that has everything we would want and is walkable from Playa Norte for very reasonable. @immamac I think you are saying though that we should not stay on Mujeres, correct, just day trip over to check it out? I really like the sounds of the island but I do worry that we may be a little limited if we had to take a ferry to get off the island. I'm thinking this might be a better route, or possibly even a split stay. What area(s) on the mainland should I be looking at for rentals?

What's the go to for car rentals? Turo?

Staying on Island is great if you aren't planning on doing any excursions and chillin on the beach and resort exclusively. Town is pretty small and you can make it work for a whole week, but why would you when you can stay mainland and do it for just a day?

Car rentals are very strange in MX - you should likely just stick to the majors. I use https://www.autoslash.com/ all the time now, it's awesome.

Terrible advice. "Major" Mexican car rental agencies like Hertz, Alamo, etc are not affiliated with their US counterparts, they just share a name. So when you get hit with a delayed damage charge email (hey, we found a dent on the bumper), you will be fighting with your credit card company and a Mexican company that gives zero shits.

I usually rent from America Car Rental in Cancun and Playa, they have been the most reliable in the last 10 years and don't pull any insurance scams.

Thanks. This is coming together, I think I'm going to book the first 2-3 nights on Mujeres and the next 4-6 in playa. I'm looking at private condo rentals in complexes that are "steps from the beach" and there are some really good options.

Quick question imma, when you said I was totally wrong about hotel types, could you explain yourself? I think you're right that we're better off in most cases at a rental vs an all inclusive. But then again I do have a 15 yo who has a daily calorie goal of 4k so it might be worth looking into. I spent some time looking at stuff today and I'm not seeing any AI resorts that offer 2 bed/2 bath rooms in that price range. Most seem to be 1k+ nightly. An AI might be hilarious to witness the damage he could do.

You would just get 2 rooms with a connecting door not a 2/2 condo or standalone unit.

Mexico is very cheap. The AI is more for the service and convenience of not having to think or find anything.

Hey brother. I know we already talked in the DMs, but for future reference, I also recommend the Akumal/Puerto Aventuras area to do the cenotes for a few days. What we often do is stay in Akumal first for a few days, then pack up and go to Isla for another few days. Great stuff. (eta: having finished reading the thread I see now that you have something similar in mind. cool) We don't even bother with PdC (our old fave) or Tulum any more. PdC is crazy now, and Tulum is nothing like the Tulum of even just 5 years ago. Akumal and the PA area still have a pretty chill vibe, at least for the time being.

Agree it'll be hot, but I find it's typically quite a bit cooler on average than it is here in Austin, even in the summer months. Highs in the low 90s and lows in the mid 70s all summer. Of course the humidity sucks though, so on the heat misery index I'd put it slightly less than Austin, but the "I'm in Isla and not Austin, and can jump in the agua whenever I want" factor puts Isla over for the easy win.

We're pretty active on our vacations, seeing the sights, taking in the history and culture etc. Not so much partying. Lots and lots of beach and water time, whale sharks, boats around the island to snorkel and fish, beach volleyball, going to local soccer, baseball, and hoops games, etc at night. The 'indoor' soccer facility on Isla is pretty fun for viewing some competitve soccer. And of course lots of cenote fun on the mainland.

Xel Ha on the mainland is also a great park to visit, built around a large lagoon.

Yep. America Car Rental has been great several times in a row for me. All the insurance & add-ons are included, etc. Rented from Hertz there one time. Never again.

The funny thing for me about the heat and moreso the humidity in Isla is that the only time it seems to bother me at all is when I'm still in travel clothes and jumping through the hoops at either end of the ferry trip, dying to get checked in and get onto the beach. And then when I'm in travel clothes again, starting the trip home. Everything pisses me off that day, 'cause I ain't wanna leave.

Good stuff wood thank you! Sounds pretty much up our alley. Kids definitely want to see some cenotes and some ruins. Question, why do you do the mainland stuff on the front end of the trip? I was planning on starting on the island, thinking being I don't want to have to mess with a ferry trying to get to the airport on the day we're leaving.

No problema! No real significant reason why we do it in that order. We just kinda always did, and then stuck with that. We are pretty active when we're on the mainland tho, going to a cenote pretty much every day, the Tulum ruins, hanging out at La Buena Vida and Lol Ha restaurants in Akumal, etc. Once we get to the island we're still pretty active but it just a little bit more relaxed vibe I guess so we just wind down a bit more there. Getting from Isla to the airport isn't hard. Just allow 1:00 to 1:15 hours to get there - 30 min for the ferry, and then 20-40 for the ride from Gran Puerto to the airport. USA Transfers ftw. Easy to book, very professional, and nice guys.

Booked our flights. Waiting for a call from Rod tomorrow to confirm bookings for a 2 bedroom at Ixchel for the first 4 nights. Looks perfect for us. I will look up and down Riviera Maya for the last 3 nights. Is PDC that big of a shithole? Never having seen it I feel like it might be fun to stay in a busier place for a few nights. Also appreciate any specific recs on cenotes or ruins. In general I prefer to do stuff on our own vs a tour, unless that is the way to go. Excited! Thanks everyone.

No I don't think PdC is a shithole at all. Sorry if it came off that way. It just grew really fast and got busier, more trendy, etc. Didn't mean to make it sound 'bad'. Sorry! Seems like that eventually happens to all the good spots. It's just not our thing any more. AFAIK it's still nice, with lots of great options, but we don't know it well anymore, at least not beyond the very central area. I'm sure some of the other guys have more recent experience there.

Re: ruins, the Tulum ruins are great, esp if you can take some time at each structure to learn about it. The guided tours there are awesome. If you're looking for a day trip, Chichen Itza is amazing, too. Cenotes: There are so many, and new ones have opened every time we go back, so these are just a few of lots of options. We love to relax and jump off the cliffs (only 10-15' feet high) at Cenote Azul and Cenote Garden of Eden/Jardin del Eden. You'll see the signs for those off the main highway on the right as you go south toward Akumal.

Spoiler

Dos Ojos is a bit more involved. It's a cenote with one larger opening and a a smaller one 50-100 yards away. You can actually float or dive underground from the big one to the smaller one, thorugh the rock formations. People come from all over the world to dive it, but you can also get a guided floating/snorkeling tour. Everything is marked and heavily traveled. They know the way. Everyone has a light, life preservers, etc. You can also just get in the water at the big opening and just hang out there.

Spoiler

We just discovered Cenote Taak Bi Ha last time we were there. Amazing. One little tiny entry, then down some stairs, and you're in a completely underground, circular cenote. This is just a portion of it. Maybe 1/3 of it. It's very near Dos Ojos. IIRC it's on the same little road that you turn onto to get to Dos Ojos:

Great info @wood thanks again so much!

I just talked to Rod, seemed like a good dude. He said we're going to love it so much that we're going to be bummed we didn't stay the whole week on IM but that staying elsewhere for a few nights is a better plan if we want to see ruins and cenotes. He also strongly cautioned against renting a car. He said if anything happens, it's always going to be the gringos fault. And stuff always happens to me. Just hoping my jinx of a presence doesn't bring the entire peninsula down with some kind of biblical flood or something.

I wouldn't stay in PDC. There's lots of good places to eat, but nothing you need to stay there for. Stay in Akumal or PA. I much prefer Coba to the Tulum ruins...Tulum is unshaded, crowded and super hot. Coba is less crowded and in the jungle. For parks, I'd do Xel-Ha over Xcaret. Xcaret is too much like Disney, everything is fake and contrived. Dos Ojos is great. I love Garden of Eden cenote but it gets crowded on weekends. If you don't find enough shit to do, take the ferry from PDC to Cozumel and explore for at least a day.
