How long will our Government keep pretending that China is not our enemy?

I think it's pretty bipartisan that China is not our friend.

Then we should be limiting trade in a move towards ending it, and cease to allow their citizens here.

Everyone just agreeing that "China is bad" but not making any effort to do anything about it is pointless.

My DIL moved here from China when she was 12. If they didn't live on college station I might wonder if she's a chicom spy.

Those of that immigrated here awhile back and got our citizenships are ok right? Or you just talking about Chinese people from China. Or are ones from Taiwan, Vietnam or other countries ok?

That's a bit simplistic.  We aren't going to phase out the 2nd largest economy in the world as a trading partner.  In the international community, you sometimes have to dance with the devil.  I do agree we need to be more forceful with them than we have been.

Everyone wants to stop trade with China but when given the choice of spending more for US made goods vs spending less for China made goods, most US consumers go for the less expensive China made stuff. Very cheap labor lowers prices.

Yea, I'm sure everyone has a few examples of buying US made over China made but a few items here and there doesn't mean shit. Most EVERYTHING in hour house is made in China. You wouldn't own all that shit if it weren't made in China.

Also the adage usually reigns true. If you're not trading goods, there's a chance you'll be trading bombs in the future.

Good thing we aren't boycotting anybody with any bombs.

How are you going to put that at the feet of normal Americans who are being paid low waged while their companies are raking in billions?

Distribute wealth properly and people can afford to pay for higher quality domestic goods

Move all American company manufacturing to North America and Central America. Give them an economy. Save on pollution with the elimination of shipping from China.

Depending on the source, factory workers make about 8-10,000 CNY per month. They work 10-12 hour days and 5-7 days a week. They don't get paid hourly. Hourly pay is probably $3-4 USD/hour, prob lower. Many workers "live" at the factories. They also have health care paid for by the gubment.

Comparable manufacturing in the US averages to $15 an hour. Even at that rate, most US factories cannot find employees. US workers have to pay for rent and health care.

This is a long way of saying products will be priced higher if manufactured in the US. Those same US companies will have a hard time competing globally against companies who manufacture in cheap labor China. Hell, they'll have a hard time competing against other US companies manufacturing in China.

It's not that easy.

But probably much more comparable for Honduras, Mexico and other Central American countries. (Ie not the US)

Normal Americans vote for the politicians that are bought by corporations that rake in billions. The only people stopping change are the people themselves.

No matter which party they vote for that doesn't change a whole lot historically. Both parties are paid off to keep the wealthy getting wealthier it's just one of the parties has taken the greed and cranked it to 11.

Legislation is about to clear the Senate to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the US. Not trying to CR this but it was one of the things Biden ran on.

Quote

After more than a year of negotiations, Congress is on the cusp of passing a bill to alleviate the chip shortage and shore up U.S. competitiveness with China — in part by giving $50 billion to the semiconductor industry.

The Senate voted 64-32 on Tuesday to end debate on the so-called “CHIPS+” bill. This key step, which required 60 votes, now sets the stage for final passage in the coming days.

As the key procedural step got underway, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the effort will help "one of the most important struggles of this century."

This is a remarkably simplistic take. Are you 12?
