Joey McGuire at the San Antonio QB Club: Texas Tech is expecting to announcing a major 2027-28 home and home with a major blue blood.

“It won’t be Texas because they’re scared.”

Says the guy with Sam Houston, Oregon State, and an FCS school on the schedule. About the team playing Ohio State in week two.

One thing for sure…..

Texas will never schedule Tech in any major sport as long as CDC is here.

The only way they will have the privilege of playing Texas is in a playoff.

To echo another reply, I am tired of openly lying being accepted in society. I do not care in the least who any of these schools play or don’t play. I do care that you can say blatantly false things now and it’s just accepted as normal. That’s not cool and if Dillingham starts doing this at ASU I’ll feel exactly the same way. McGuire is an average to below average football coach that’ll say or do anything he’s told because he enjoys the salary he gets, no more no less. Campbell doing it is embarrassing, but again listening to him talk and reading interviews with him leads me to believe that he likes being so visible and recognized. An attention whore if you will. Hardly unique in sports, but that’s the profile that fits him.

Texas high school football coaches are by and large the common clay of the new west. Not all, but it’s north of 70 percent.

The next time someone offends you about something and they tell you that what you are mentally or emotionally invested in doesn’t matter just remember you said this.

Lying matters in big moments and smaller ones because you are showing people there no consequences involved anymore when you make up things out of whole cloth. Young impressionable minds see this and some, not all, will follow suit in their own lives. So yes this DOES MATTER. If your school is run by verifiably ignorant morons like these two it needs to be pointed out and they need to mocked and made fun of until they stop doing it.

I'm not saying that you're wrong or that your feelings about liars are invalid, I'm just incapable of getting too worked up over anything that doesn't actually affect people's lives in a negative way. I'm also taking an anonymously sourced quote from Bobby Burton with an enormous grain of salt, given my own personal experience with that man.

FWIW, I do think that he should have kept those other coach's names out of his goofy little PR stunt regardless of who he did or didn't speak to about whatever.

I worked for Rivals back in the day. I'm not going to elaborate much further because I don't want to doxx myself, but "misquoted" players were a somewhat common thing and I had to field calls from angry parents more than once over it.

Also, I think you misunderstood me, the PR stunt is definitely from Tech. It really blows my mind that so many people are falling for what is essentially rage bait.

That you do not get worked up about this is fine. If we all lived in a constant state of being upset about everything it’d be hard to get through a day. The negative effect though of this is the one that lingers with folks and leads them to becoming habitual liars because young minds are impressionable. Those are the things that will have an effect on society years down the road. It may be small or it could be a person who one day has an outsized influence on something that is important to people and society. I personally do not care a great deal about the inner workings of collegiate athletics, but I do care that these young folks have people giving them direction mentally that is a net positive on their lives.

I can tell you less than nothing about Bobby Burton other than knowing his name. If he peddles untruths and flat out verifiable lies then screw him too. Being truthful should still matter.

I'm not even going to go this far, but my experience with him and at least how Rivals operated back then leads me to be very skeptical. He's not usually the type of person that won't name sources and he didn't even call it a Texas State source.

If literally anyone else in sports media had reported this I would not be nearly as skeptical.

Did Tech get betting on your own team legalized yet? Lots of money making opportunities for the players going forward if we can push this through.

#6582

I Have never met Bobby or Gerry and never followed Rivals or any other source because I pretty much quit following recruiting when Jerry Scarborough quit producing newsletters and videos back in the early 90’s.

Some of you old fuckers will know who I am talking about.

Now that I am retired I started watching Coffee and Football last August and have continued to watch.

I find them to be very informative and interesting but most of all, accurate.

I appreciate the fact they will not release information about a player until said player releases his own statement.

Best Texas podcast available in my opinion.

Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Doubles Down | Wednesday 1:40 p.m.

By CJ Vogel

Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Doubles Down on Sark, Texas

****

I made the trip to San Antonio this afternoon for the San Antonio QB Club luncheon with Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire.

There were plenty of discussion about NIL, about the portal, about the upcoming team in Lubbock, Texas. Everything that you typically hear from head coaches in front of notable alumni and boosters who took time off from work to potentially get a photo or question in with the head football coach.

At one point the topic of the Tech schedule was brought up. To which, McGuire said Texas Tech will have some significant news in the next week or two in regards to their 2027-28 schedule with a "major blue blood." However, that home and home series would not be with the Texas Longhorns, "because they are scared," he joked.

On top of all of the Red Raider-tinted questions from the audience, I wanted to see if McGuire's stance on calling for Texas to spot the ball had changed. Or, if there were truth to the coaches from ACU and Texas State agreeing to drop their week one games for it to become a possibility.

***

Q: Coach, at Big 12 Spring Meetings, you said both Coach (Keith) Patterson and Coach (GJ) Kinne were willing to give up their games. Is that true, that both coaches agreed (to cancel their games), and what's the hold up –"

McGuire: Yeah, Keith Patterson, I have known him since 2003, and GJ (Kinne), I watched him grow up. I have known his dad forever. So I texted both of them after the remarks. You know it is funny – people were telling me, I wasn't paying attention – I was like, surely (Sarkisian) isn't talking about us.

Like I started this off by saying – my dad always said 'If you're going to say something, say it to 'em and say it to their face.' And so, there were a lot of people assuming that he was talking about Texas Tech. No matter what he was saying about us, you oughta be worried about yourself. But also, don't go out there and make a statement that you can win a conference with your 2's and 3's. That didn't happen whenever they were in this conference. And so, they're making that statement.

I texted Keith (Patterson) and GJ (Kinne) and go, 'Hey, do whatever you need to do,' and Keith Patterson responded with 'Great, we are in.'

Where we are at right now, is we have said let's play, we will buy those games out. Cody Campbell came out and said we will buy those games out. But we have gotten no response. So that is where we are at.

The tough thing is – I am sure y'all have heard or seen – Kirby Hocutt, our A.D., and Chris Del Conte, the Texas A.D., had a gentleman's agreement. We all know what that means, we all look at each other and we shake hands, and we were continue to play and that is not the case. Whatever the records are in the past, I know we are 1–1. I know they came to Lubbock and got beat, and I know that we went to Texas and got our tails kicked.

I feel good about our team. If you are making statements about other teams, you have to feel really good about your team. And you have to back that up. We would love to play at The University of Texas. I said it yesterday on Josh Pate (Show), if it is not game one, hopefully we get a chance where we are both good enough to play in the College Football Playoffs.

It would almost be frontier justice – I am trying to think of the right word – for the Longhorns to have to come back into Lubbock, Texas to playoff game. It would be a lot of fun."

Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire at the San Antonio QB Club luncheon on the decision timeline for QB Brendan Sorsby:

“We could know today. It may be while we are sitting here, you all may get an alert on your phone. I think we will know by Monday. It is a really unfortunate situation,

i see what you're saying, but he was quite obviously talking about their 12 game regular season schedule.

but just because you brought it up, tech does not play iowa state or kansas this year and those teams do not play each other, so yes it would be possible for all 3 of them to go undefeated and 1 of them would not be in the conference championship game. there are probably more combinations like that out there, that was just the first one i found in the 30 seconds of research i did on it.

I don't know, I'd submit it was working the refs for the next playoff selections. Tech played a relatively weak schedule last year, got in with a bye even and promptly showed they didn't belong. I think scheduling is a fair criticism. Also, the committee has in its selection criteria SOS and largely ignored that last year in lieu of solely how many losses a team had. So I think he's reminding them of what they actually say matters as well as pointing out that a good W-L record without having played anybody doesn't result in the best teams being in the field.

I meant specifically the part about his backups going undefeated in the Big XII. I know you agree with him but it's not true and dumb to say. The rest I don't think really matters. The Big XII champ will get in automatically and the conference will never get a second at large so it doesn't change the math for Texas with the CFP. There's also no more auto bye so it doesn't help there either.

He said what he said, it is what it is, it's a weird thing to try and repeatedly lie about. Mind you, I don't really have a problem with what he said, because he was clearly saying our schedule is weak as fuck compared to his, and he's right, but he did say he could go undefeated with his 2s and 3s. It was a dumb thing to say but the greater context of his comment is completely obvious and understandable.
