Yesterday I read articles about child labor laws being rolled back in red states allowing 14 year olds to work and doctors in even blue states being threatened for providing gender affirming care to trans kids. God almighty.

Yesterday I saw this segment about book banning on CBS Sunday Morning:

In it they interview a former 10th grade schoolteacher from Norman, OK who got caught up in the controversy. She ultimately resigned before they could fire her. She said something I wanted to remember so I jotted down the quote: “Identities are not obscenities.” Her name is Summer Boismier and after the segment was over I started looking in to her story.

C5C5178C-CD5B-4A85-BC40-FA6E8CF5E314.thumb.jpeg.0ab65afdaaeb89b963eaf5f28864d839.jpeg

The Oklahoma book ban was ostensibly about CRT but the Karen who complained was concerned about the book Gender Queer. The thing is, that book wasn’t available at the school where Summer taught. In response to the book banning, Ms. Boismier posted a QR code in her classroom that led to “Books Unbanned,” a service provided by the Brooklyn, NY Public Library where you can get a free digital library card and check out digital copies of banned books. Gender Queer was a title available from the Brooklyn library, and for that some parent wanted her to be charged with dissemination of pornography. Note that the parent’s daughter never scanned the QR code, but she did. So Summer was immediately suspended.

https://okcfox.com/news/local/nps-parent-says-former-teacher-should-have-criminal-charges-norman-public-schools-oklahoma-gender-queer-book-books-library-critical-race-theory-summer-boismier-sex-explicit-pornographic-pornography-senator-rob-standridge-laney-dicksion-criminal-charge

Laney Dicksion, the Karen in question, said this about Boismier: "She's been called an indoctrinator, a pedophile, a groomer and that's what these behaviors are. The woman should not have access to children now, or in the future. She should be stripped of her certifications. To be perfectly frank with you, she should have criminal charges against her."

Boismier has since left the state and now works for the Brooklyn Public Library.

I’m sure that this is the sort of collateral damage intended by the people who pass laws banning books that deal with sexual and gender identity. By banning books that deal with those issues, you can also ban teachers with sexual and gender identities you disapprove of.  And now, because they haven’t been dickish enough, the Oklahoma State Dept. of Education is trying to revoke Boismier’s teaching license. The cruelty really is the point.

https://okcfox.com/news/local/summer-boismier-teaching-certificate-revoked-norman-oklahoma-ryan-walters-books-unbanned-qr-code-state-department-education-brooklyn-public-library-critical-race-theory-gender-queer-

And it causes real pain and suffering to real people. (I’ve never before recommended a Twitter thread before. This is a first for me. But it’s short and I think it’s worthwhile.)

I hear the kinds of things that people like Ron DeSantis and the book banning crowd are saying and it sounds like things I’ve heard before. It reminds me of when they were trying to ban rock music with explicit lyrics back in the 80’s. Frank Zappa was an opponent of such measures and famously spoke out in Congress, along with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and John Denver, against Tipper Gore and the PMRC. Here’s a little trip in the Wayback Machine to a 1986 appearance by Frank on CNN’s Crossfire. The whole interview is worth watching but if nothing else you can fast forward to 10:08 when Frank warned that the biggest threat to America was that we’re moving toward a fascist theocracy. Seems prescient.

“The Karen in question”.   I’m totally stealing that. Sadly, nothing else surprising or noteworthy in that article.  Book burning’s are always how it starts.

the only major difference I see is that most party regimes ban/burn books during their rise to lower.  What we’re seeing is the last gasp to retain power by a declining party regime.  It’s an important distinction, not without precedent.

Wall Street Journal: Bud Light owner places two execs on leave after transgender influencer backlash

The VP of Marketing who concocted this idea and the CMO were put on leave-- the company tried to make it sound like they voluntarily took a leave of absence, but reports from WSJ make it sound like they are being quietly fired.

Probably because "The boycott appears to be having some effect on business. According to Beer Business Daily, Bud Light sales fell 10.7% the week ended April 8, while shares in rival Molson Coors appear to have gotten at least a short-term lift."

Quote

“Given the circumstances, Alissa has decided to take a leave of absence which we support,” an Anheuser-Busch spokeswoman said in an email. “Daniel has also decided to take a leave of absence.”

The decision to take a leave wasn’t voluntary, according to people familiar with the matter. AB InBev named another executive to replace Ms. Heinerscheid.

I can see it from both sides here from a business perspective:

  • It's a declining brand and so you are attempting to broaden your demographics and buying personas and think you increase your total addressable market by appealing to young people, progressives, etc. who have never or rarely been your paying customers.
  • On the other hand, you are a lifestyle brand with an entrenched and passionate core identity of lower-middle-class/poor people and your billion dollar marketing machine should have enough data and analytics to show you that this would be a horrible, horrible idea.

At the end of the day to grow and transform, you have to take business risks. People rise and fall everyday in corporations taking risks, this is just a really visible one. In fact, if it weren't so visible and political, I'd argue these folks would probably get a raise and promotion for taking the risk and failing rather then being pushed out, but alas.

The Speaker in the Montana House, Matt Regier, is copying Cam Sexton of Tennessee and not letting Zooey Zephyr speak. Three thousand of her supporters signed a petition to get him to change his mind but he ignored that. When he again refused to let her speak, citing concerns over “decorum,” the goon squad was called in and seven protesters were arrested.

State-enforced gender-norms, hooray! Take off that fucking pantsuit, you GROOMER!

https://www.vice.com/en/article/n7ebag/texas-ag-transgender-dress-code-memo

The department, which is led by the elected Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, distributed a memo to employees last week informing them that they’re required to dress in a “manner consistent with their biological gender,” according to the Texas Observer, which obtained the memo and published it in part on Monday.

The memo, which is clearly aimed at transgender and gender non-conforming employees, goes on to say that repeated violations of the policy will be subject to “corrective action” up to and including being fired, according to the Observer. One employee who spoke with the Observer said the policy “feels like it threatens the safety of anyone who doesn’t conform to the binary dress code.”

Sid Miller is willing to completely ignore a recent Supreme Court ruling which held this type of policy violates Title VII as sex discrimination.

However, when asked to raise the age for AR15 purchases to 21, several Rs run and hide stating that the law would just be overturned by the Courts under the Second Amendment.

Just Exhibit 1 million in the current hypocrisy of the Republican party

I'm super glad in the midst of another draught, Colorado river issues, farming challenges, mutilated cattle with no tongues or anuses (anusi?), and record low production across a number of commodity categories that our beloved Ag Commissioner is tackling women in pants suits around the office.  Thank the fucking Lord, Sid.  Shortage of how many goddamn Texas-grown fruits and vegetables this year, water issues abound, but no boys wearing makeup 'round the field testing sites?  Oh thank god!

@troph @safe sex etc. don't want to raise your blood pressure, but Montana banned her from the chamber

https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/26/politics/montana-house-bans-zooey-zephyr/index.html

Quote

Montana’s Republican-dominated House voted Wednesday to ban Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who had said GOP lawmakers would have “blood” on their hands for passing bills restricting transgender rights and rallied protesters Monday after Speaker Matt Regier blocked her from being recognized to speak, from the House chamber for the remainder of this year’s legislative session.

Under the disciplinary measure approved on a 68-32 vote Wednesday, Zephyr – the 34-year-old Democrat from Missoula who last year became the first openly transgender woman elected to Montana’s legislature – will be allowed to retain her seat and cast votes remotely. But she will not be able to participate in debates. The session is scheduled to end next week.

That was their response to all of those young/liberal/LBGTQ folks showing up to protest.

What's infuriating is that the GOP is well out of the mainstream on this and Dems are still running scared. Every Democrat at every fucking level of government should constantly be pointing out what a fucking freak and monster every single elected GOP official is. There should be an endless goddamned deluge of moral denunciations of the GOP for this shit and their extremely unpopular anti-abortion bullshit. It's not just morally right, it's a huge fucking political winner! But the Dems are still so scared that, at least at the national level, Joe Biden really is the only one saying any of this shit. And he's barely saying it and he's limiting his fire to "MAGA extremists," rather than pointing out that it's just standard Republican shit.

She spoke an inconvenient truth, that by denying gender-affirming care to young people, they’d have blood on their hands.

That doesn't really address my question.

I know she stated that.  My question was, what was the rule of decorum those who censured her claim that statement violated?

For example, I don't believe a member of Congress can call a witness testifying before Congress a "liar" (looking at you, MTG).  Also, I don't believe it is appropriate for members of Congress to address one another directly when speaking, but instead to direct their statements to the presiding officer (I haven't researched these points, just going off general recollection).

FWIW this is what I've been able to find so far

From the AP:

Quote

Under Regier’s leadership, the House has not allowed Zephyr to speak since last week when she said that those who voted to ban gender-affirming care for young people would have “blood on their hands.” He and other Republicans said the remark was far outside the boundaries of appropriate civil discourse and demanded she apologize before being allowed to participate in legislative discussions.

The events have showcased the growing power of the Montana Freedom Caucus, a group of right-wing lawmakers that has spearheaded the charge to discipline Zephyr. The caucus re-upped its demands and rhetoric Monday. In a statement they said that Zephyr’s decision to hoist a microphone toward the gallery’s protesters amounted to “encouraging an insurrection.”

* * * *

She said she does not intend to apologize and argued that her “blood on your hands” remark accurately reflected the stakes of such bans for transgender kids.

Also this from NBC News:

Quote

Rep. David Bedey, a Republican, blamed Zephyr for the actions of protesters on Monday, when they shouted from the gallery after Republicans voted to block her from speaking.

“It’s an irrefutable fact that the representative in question did indeed actively support and arguably incite the disruptive antics of demonstrators who had gathered in the House gallery,” Bedey said.

He said Zephyr could have joined other legislators in leaving the House floor as the speaker directed that day, or she could have tried to calm the crowd, but he said she did neither, which he said forced lawmakers to suspend the session.

“This is an assault on our representative democracy,” he said. “Spirited debate and the free expression of ideas cannot flourish in an atmosphere of turmoil and incivility.”

What rule? They don’t need a rule. It’s like how the two Justins in Tennessee violated the rule against being uppity black men. She said she hopes when they bow their heads in prayer they see the blood on their hands. She was violating the Talibaptist law against sacrilege. Authoritarians don’t need rules. They don’t like her, they don’t like what she stands for, they don’t like what she says, so they’re silencing her. I think they’d expel her from the legislature if not for how that backfired on the fascists in Nashville. Threatening decorum or whatever their excuse is just bullshit.

The "decorum" rules have always been maleable to the whims of the party in power.  Republican controlled legislatures have used them to silence voices tons of times, but now they are not even trying to tether their actions to reality/decency/common sense.  Simple beaurecratic facism to hold back any voice calling them out for their abhorrent behaviour and policies.  They can all eat a bowl of fuck, choke on it, and die.

The Fox poll listed above is a nice little ray of sunshine, but wtf does public opinion matter when the public doesn't punish the officials who engage in bigotry?

We need a new Civil Rights Bill, and there is no member of Congress that I'm aware of with the skill, clout, and will to push one through. Nor does Biden have it in him to put forth much of a firewall.

It'd be cool if the DoJ would sue to stay some of this legislative action (and maybe that has happened and I'm not aware of it), but I'm not going to hold my breath

Spring Branch Karen thinks actors playing characters of other genders is the exact same thing as a drag show. I'm not joking.

Quote

Jessica Gerland’s kindergartener was scheduled to go on the field trip.

“The way that they are normalizing this, especially in front of 5- to 6-year-olds, it just raises concerns for some parents,” she said. .

Gerland says she brought her concerns to the district at Monday’s school board meeting, after calling Main Street Theater to get additional details. She says the theater told her actors play multiple roles that are both male and female.

"She explained to me how they wear flamboyant makeup and wigs to make it fun for the kids," she said. "Do you know what the definition of a drag queen is?"

It boils down to the fatty platform. Just like I do truly believe he doesn't want kids to get killed in school, he wants his guns and boat more than dead kid reduction.

I do believe that a significant number of Republicans would prefer to cool it on the grooming bullshit, but not at the expense of guns and boats. And since their vote is taken care of, the truly hateful are the drivers of the Republican bus. None of the passengers care enough to take over the wheel because it's still getting them to the gun and boat store, even if they run over a few gays and kids on the way.
